— If a child wants identifying information about their donor, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) will send an application pack. Once HFEA receives the completed application, a search begins.

— Sperm donors who provided samples before April 1, 2005 have the right to remain anonymous.

— All donors can apply to find out the sex and birthdates of any resulting offspring but no identifying details.

— Sperm donors must be aged between 18 and 45; in good health with no history of mental disorders or genetic disease; and have normal intelligence and fertility.

— Sperm donors have to submit to blood tests and genital examination.

— Donors are asked to provide details such as place of birth, appearance, job, skills and interests.

— Up to ten families can be treated using sperm from any one donor. There is no limit on the number of children each family may have; however, the donor may specify a lower number of families.

— Donors may claim up to £250 for lost earnings.

— Donations are kept for up to ten years, but a shorter time may be specified.

— Donors who gave sperm on or after April 1, 2005 can be contacted by offspring when they reach the age of 18.

— Donors have no legal obligation to children created from the donation.
