World Wrestling Entertainment (formerly WWF) arrives in Britain this week with a series of bouts. If it gets anywhere near as big here as in America, you can expect these characters to become household names.
The Iron Sheik (Hossein Vaziri)
A former bodyguard for the Shah of Iran, the Iron Sheik is a WWE veteran.
Sadly, the man who popularised the “camel clutch” manoeuvre is best known
now as a YouTube curiosity after a homophobic rant against a rival wrestler.
Festus (Drew Hankinson)
The 6ft 7in Marylander’s first alter ego was the camp-sounding Dorian Deville
— so he soon moved on. Festus’s most famous fight came in 2006 when he
choke-slammed an opponent, wearing the latter’s old stage costume.
Super Crazy (Francisco Islas)
They love to wrestle down Mexico way, and Super Crazy is one of their best. He
was originally one-third of the short-lived Mexicools, a troupe that made
its debut riding to the ring on lawnmowers. His signature move is the
“moonsault”, a back flip from the ropes in which he crash-lands on his
opponent.
Umaga (Edward Fatu)
This Lycra-clad Samoan monster previously wrestled under the handles of Jamal
and Ekmo, but it’s as Umaga that he perfected the “Samoan spike” — a
thumb-thrust to the throat.
Missing Link (Byron Robertson)
Unintentionally one of the funniest WWE stars, thanks to appalling face
make-up that seemed straight out of Kiss — or clown school. He died in 2007.
