He can otherwise be the perfectly articulate gent, but put your average bloke next to a games console and he becomes transfigured - Man becomes Caveman. Such are the findings of recent research in which brain activity was analysed while participants played video games.
In what must have been a nightmare of wiring, scientists at Stanford University rigged up participants to an MRI scanner while they played a specially designed game, the object being to make the most gains in territory.
The study revealed differences in motivation between the sexes. In male subjects, this brain activity increased as territory was accumulated. Writing in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, the report's author, Dr Allan Reiss, concluded: “It's fair to say that males tend to be more intrinsically territorial. It doesn't take a genius to figure out who historically are the conquerors and tyrants of our species.”
The study showed that women, although getting the hang of the game and able to assess how to win, were less driven to succeed. Well, that explains my very limited discussions with my girlfriend on the subject of video games: “I can see you're obsessed with blowing up that flashing red thing, darling. I just don't understand why.”

I hate these games. When I was a kid we went to the park and raced around all day playing cowboys and indians - now that was exciting! We made our own bows and arrow which, with a cheap cap gun, provided endless fun.
Kevin Straw, Leicester,
This could be true as it plays with the most simple of motivations kill kill kill and the ADRENALIN fueled rampages within the primitive brain. Im a gamer a hardcore gamer and I love it.
ENDORPHINES here I come.
Chris, ENGALAND,
Women haven't historically been given the opportunity to be 'tyrants and conquerors', that much is true - but of most women you know, surely they would rather lead in a more intelligent way than decimating cities? That's the difference that this study highlights.
Lynn, London,
I don't know about the comparative response of women, but guys in front of video games CERTAINLY turn off! Getting their attention becomes nigh impossible!
Adam, Oxford,
Oh please - what pop psych nonsense! Historically men were conquerors because women usually lacked the opportunity to become leaders, at least in Western cultures. But what about Boudicca? Or, in Japan, Tomoe Gozen?
Alex Duggan, London, UK
Most women can understand video games to the same extent that most men can understand Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives.
Also, video games give men the chance to indulge the instinctive urges that civilised society represses. I would've thought this was common sense.
