As Britons everywhere prepare to celebrate their love this Valentine’s Day, compelled by enraptured hearts, intertwined souls and the exhortations of retailers across the country, a national florist has released figures on the areas of the UK that are most and least generous when it comes to spending money in the name of love.
Tyneside lovers come out on top, according to flowersdirect.co.uk , spending on average £58 on flowers alone, almost twice as much as their comparatively miserly Teesside neighbours, who presumably believe that money can’t buy love.
Amorous Geordies in Tyneside are closely followed by romantics in the Central Midlands, who spend £56 and Merseysiders who part with £55 on average.
Elsewhere, Lancashire lads trounce their Yorkshire rivals in the spending stakes, climbing to eighth place league (spending £49) against a disappointing performance from North Yorkshire (£28).
And Merseysiders come in at third on the table (£55), while Mancunians only just manage to scrape into the top ten (£48).
Glaswegians apparently spend the least of all, parting with only £25 for the objects of their affection. Some argue it is the thought that counts.
