Cannabis plants have been put on display at the Chelsea Flower Show to educate visitors about the uses plants can be put to.

It was claimed to be the first time that cannabis plants have been at the show but, to the disappointment of many intrigued visitors, the variety on display is different to the one popularly known as weed.
The Cannabis sativa plants are the strain better known as industrial hemp and were being shown to illustrate the uses of plants in modern society.
They have been carefully cultivated to be rid of any hallucinogenic or medicinal qualities and are grown strictly for their fibre. The fibres can be used as an alternative to cotton and as horse blankets. They are also regarded as a highly efficient insulator for homes.
Hallucinogenic varieties, those kept away from Chelsea, are thought to have medicinal qualities and are undergoing trials in the hope that they can be offered as a prescription drug to ease the pain of cancer and multiple sclerosis patients.
The decision to display cannabis was taken by the South East England Development Agency which wanted to show the uses of plants other than for gardens and food crops.
The cannabis specimens will not be offered to the public as part of the traditional plant sell-off on Saturday.

A few points :
1) all cannabis is "Cannabis Sativa". Whether grown for fibres or drugs. There are 2 subspecies, Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Ruderalis (some debate over a Cannabis Rasta strain). Cannabis grown for fibre has been bred to have as close to zero THC as possible. Cannabis grown for medicine has been bred to have as much THC as possible. However it is entirely possible to cross-breed the two.
2) THC, the main active ingredient in the medicine/drug is not an hallucinogen. It is psychotropic and psychoactive.
apart from that, big respect to Chelsea for showing this fascinating plant

When considering the uses of the hemp plant we need to be thinking about more than just fiber for clothing. Although hemp is a much more suitable source of fiber than cotton for many reasons we also need to consider the other uses of hemp such as food and bio fuels.
Industrial hemp is the governments own version of "Genetically Modified" Hemp.
Industrial Hemp produces a lot less biomass than natural hemp because industrial hemp has been bred to produce less flowers. Less flowers means fewer seeds.
When using hemp for oil production the seeds are the most important part as the oil is made from the seeds.
Natural hemp produces 3 times as many seeds as industrial hemp and with selective breeding many more seeds could be produced.
