Ailon Freedman, a yoga instructor, teaches golfers to focus on the “here and now” when taking a shot and to visualise where they want the ball to go. Most golfers play at the mercy of their nerves, worrying about repeating past mistakes or making fresh ones, he says.

EXERCISE: The power twist (for the spine, hips and shoulders).

Stand and place your weight on your knees - your thighs remain vertical - and then step forward with your right foot, as though you were going into a lunge. Twist your upper body 90 degrees to the right and place your right hand on your right hip and left hand on your right knee. Your spine should be vertical. If you are able, slide your left shoulder down to the outside of your right knee and move you left hand to your right hip. Your right hand should move to the small of your back.

Deepen the twist by looking up to the ceiling, pulling your right shoulder back and trying to lift your abdomen over your thigh. If you are supple enough, clasp your hands together under your right thigh. Release slowly and return to the start position before repeating, starting with the left leg.
