By all rights it should have been, like, so “not hot”.
And yet, after 23 days in a women’s correctional facility for driving her Bentley convertible with a licence that had been suspended for drink-driving, the all-new Paris Hilton — philanthropic, spiritually enlightened, abreast of the latest developments in The Wall Street Journal and, most of all, “not dumb” — fluttered out from confinement yesterday morning like an exotic bird from a zookeeper’s cage.
Her hair in a plait, hands clasped in front of her, wearing tight jeans, white stilettoes, a white T-shirt and green vest with cream piping, Hilton gave a coquettish smile as she tip-toed between two steep banks of paparazzi — the image suggesting a modern-day Moses after parting the Red Sea. “Paris is walking! Paris is smiling! Paris is waving!” reported the CNN anchor, sounding almost euphoric.
And then, on seeing her mother in the back of a waiting Cadillac Escalade — the scourge of environmentalists for its 13mpg city fuel consumption — she broke into a run. Through the open window, they hugged. It was a tender mother/heiress/paparazzi/SUV/bodyguards/prison officials moment captured on every conceivable form of media for billions to see. Meanwhile, life has been getting worse for the man responsible for putting Hilton back in jail, after her initial release for “medical reasons”.
It began a fortnight ago when it emerged that the wife of Rocky Delgadillo, the Los Angeles city attorney, had crashed a city-issued car while driving (like Hilton) with a suspended licence. She avoided jail (unlike Hilton) and the city paid for the damages, before Mr Delgadillo reimbursed taxpayers last week.
Then came news of an outstanding arrest warrant for her for another traffic incident in 1998, and an admission from Mr Delgadillo that he drove without insurance for a year. It was also revealed that he had used city employees to babysit his children, and violated campaign finance laws on 30 counts. Now it is alleged that his wife’s firm did not file for a business licence or pay city business taxes. “Any police officer who committed Delgadillo’s offences would be fired,” thundered the Los Angeles Times this week. “Why does the city’s top law enforcement official get a better deal?”
As for Lee Baca, LA’s County Sheriff, he is still under pressure to explain why he released Hilton prematurely for medical reasons, when no evidence has emerged beyond her sobbing after three days of incarceration.
Tonight the heiress will appear in front of Larry King, the CNN talk-show host, to describe her ordeal to anyone who did not catch her multiple interviews while behind bars.

Nelson Mandela remains one of the world's most revered statesman, who led the struggle to replace the apartheid regime of South Africa with a multi-racial democracy. I am not sure how Paris' minute imprisonment can be compared to Madiba's years of being in prison.Despite many years in jail, he emerged to become the country's first black president and to play a leading role in the drive for peace in other spheres of conflict. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. To use Mandela in this context says a lot about how some in this society have to get grips with sensitivity on some issues.

She certainly has had far more publicity than Nelson Mandele when he was released.
RW, London,
Don't make so much of Paris Hilton, and still don't make so little of her either. I wish the best for Paris and may the Lord bless her as she continues her life, in the media or out of the media. I like you Paris. Jesus bless you!

I liked the cute walk, by she certainly has put on a few kilos. The thighs were looking thick in those jeans, and too much fat-arm for those short sleves.

AMERICA!!!!
Seriously.........get a life. Why is Paris Hilton's life so fascinating for so many people?

LOL....good one Ed from New Jersey! Hey!..does anyone else agree that she looks better without make up as in these just released from jail photos? Geez! Now with that no make up girl next door look, and her born again spirit. could politics be in her future? It wouldn't surprise me anymore.
Murph, Madisonville, USA/KY
I'm dumbfounded to discover that the man whose release encapsulates the principal foundations of my country is comparable to such dead brain material. Grudgingly one can only hold accountble the triviality of tabloids who continue to distort those concepts most valued by the free world.
Simon. D, Cape Town, South Africa
Your comment likening her to Nelson Mandela is insulting and disgusting. She is at IT girl -famous for being famous. She has not done a single thing in her carefully stage managed and calculated life. Respectable publications like the times do us all a great disservice when you give her so much attention. Leave that to the red tops.
Rufaro J Zindoga, Harare, Zimbabwe
It was her fault that she was borh into one of the richest families in the world. What about hetr parent ? Where they not able to guide he through her celebrittey ? Why not take an example of Bill Gates and his offspring.
anita Watts, Brussels, Belgium
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ... what's new-someone connected to law enforcement got (mutiple) breaks?? The 'bubba ' connection is apparently alive and well in the city of angels....
robert, gotham city, andorra
Would someone please explain why so much attention is focussed on so little? Why not write an article on something more important like constipation in worms or something?
OK how about the latest child v child killing?
Jeff Larsen, Chch, NZ
To parallel then end of her confinement with that of Madiba is serious disrespect to the apartheid liberation struggle.
Sandi Mnkandla, Singapore,
Will prison become the new rehab? Certainly Paris looks more revitalised than Jade, Lindsay or Britney.
Nic Corry, Hong Kong, China SAR
Jesus! How long is it going to take the UN to chime in?
Ed, Jersey City,
I wish, she could just stay away forever.
