Can you suggest some games to play with two-year-olds?

I’ve received lots of e-mails recently requesting games for the troublesome twos. Was there a baby boom a couple of years ago, perhaps? Anyway, here are some ideas that will work whether you have a toddler on your own to amuse, or a whole roomful of the little angels.

– I haven’t yet met a two-year-old who doesn’t like music. So whack on a CD and have a stab at Pet’s Corner. Sketch your best dog, cat, rabbit and mouse on separate sheets of paper (or tear some pictures out of a magazine) and stick one sheet up in each corner of the room. Get players grooving to the beat while the music is on, but as soon as you turn it down, shout out the name of one of your four pets. Players must run and stand in the corresponding corner and woof, meow, twitch their noses or squeak. If mistakes are made, simply nudge players in the right direction. Award points for speed, animal impressions and dance moves. If you’re bored with animals, use hats, scarves, socks and shoes instead, and enjoy some dressing up.

– For a quieter time, get gluey with the girls. Hand over one big sheet of paper, one glue stick and some things to sprinkle – rice, sugar, sunflower seeds, tiny pieces of newspaper or dried herbs. With the boys, conjure up an instant obstacle course for toy cars or tractors. Grab books and building blocks to make ramps to slide down, tunnels to go through, bridges to cross and boulders to smash down.
