Switching to a new broadband supplier should get easier this week when rules come into effect that force companies to speed up the process.
On Wednesday, Ofcom, the telecoms watchdog, will implement plans to stop broadband firms charging customers for switching and unnecessarily holding up the process.
Internet providers that continue to drag their heels could face heavy fines.
The broadband market has never been more competitive, with firms such as Talk Talk, Virgin and BT battling for customers. About 234,000 customers are switching between providers every month to take advantage of falling prices, according to the price-comparison firm Uswitch.
But Ofcom has received thousands of complaints from consumers who have struggled to move. Many people were so frustrated by the process, which can take up to five weeks, they gave up, missing out on big savings.
Many of the problems centre on the migration authorisation code (Mac), a type of personal Pin number that consumers need for a quick transfer between companies.
When you want to switch broadband you need to get the Mac from your current provider and give it to the new company. The Mac also allows you to use your existing broadband connection during the switching process. Without it, customers have to do without broadband while the new connection is set up.
Until now, Macs have been issued under a voluntary agreement by the industry, which leaves consumers powerless if the switching process is dragged out. To make matters worse, not all broadband suppliers have used the Mac system.
But from tomorrow Macs will be mandatory and firms must send out a free code when asked within five days. Once the new provider receives the Mac they must try to switch the customer to their service within 30 days and inform them of the exact date that they will be connected.
Jason Lloyd, head of broadband at switching firm Moneysupermarket.com, said: “These rule changes will help many people change providers more easily. The introduction of compulsory Mac codes will make providers more accountable to the customers and what they deliver.”
TIPS FOR MOVING SUPPLIERS
Tell your supplier you want to switch. It should give you a Mac within five days. If it takes longer, complain to Ofcom.
Give your old provider’s details and Mac to your new supplier. It will contact your old provider and arrange the transfer. Firms must try to switch customers to their service within 30 days of receiving the Mac.
You should lose broadband for no more than 20 minutes during the service transfer if you have a Mac.
