If you paid a mortgage exit fee which was higher than the fee indicated when you signed up for your home loan, you can claim a refund for the difference. But to do this, you must contact your lender. To help, we have compiled a list of contact details for the major lenders, plus some details of the exit fees they have charged over the years (if there are no exit fees from when you had a mortgage, don't be put off. Some lenders are reluctant to share this information.)

If you are eligible for a refund, write to your lender, and they should refund you. If you encounter any difficulties, let us know.

Exit fees: In November 1998 the fee was 50.00. The fee increased to £75 in November 2000, £100 in April 2004, £115 in November and up to £150 in June 2005. The current fee of £175 has been effective since September 2005.

Nationwide:

Nationwide charged exit fees of between £35 and £67 in the 1990's. They removed the fee altogether between 1998 and 2005. They introduced a £90 exit fee in January 2005.
