David Beckham was returning to Spain from a family holiday today as fresh allegations about his private life surfaced.
The England captain was due to leave the French ski resort of Courchevel, where he has spent the last two days with wife Victoria and their children.
He flew out to meet them on Monday after being forced to dismiss claims that he had a brief affair with his former personal assistant, Rebecca Loos. Reporters who have been tracking Beckham said that they believed he had now left.
He is due back at training with his club, Real Madrid, tomorrow. His team mates went out of the European Cup last night to AS Monaco on away goals after squandering a three-goal lead.
Victoria, their two children Romeo and Brooklyn, and her family are expected to remain on holiday for the rest of the week – although it is not clear if they will continue to stay in Courchevel.
Mrs Beckham vowed that her marriage would survive yesterday, reportedly saying: "We have been through a lot worse than this."
Beckham is alleged to have had an intimate relationship with the 26-year-old Ms Loos, which included sending explicit text messages.
The alleged infidelity took place when Ms Loos was a personal assistant for Beckham after he moved to Madrid last year.
The footballer denied the claims in a statement issued on Sunday, but there has been no indication that he plans to take legal action against the newspapers that have printed the allegations.
An unnamed friend of Ms Loos claimed today that Beckham had sent text messages to another woman, which had infuriated her.
The friend also told The Sun newspaper that Ms Loos, who has remained silent so far, plans to go public with her story.
