Abu Izzadeen, the radical Muslim who heckled the Home Secretary last year, has been arrested for allegedly encouraging terrorism, police said today.
Izzadeen, 31, was arrested at 9.30am this morning in Leyton High Road, east London, under Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006 and is currently in custody at a Central London police station.
He is connected to Omar Bakri Mohammed, the exiled leader of al-Muhajiroun, a recently banned extremist group who call for the establishment of an Islamist state in Britain.
Izzadeen came to public prominence after refusing to condemn the 7/7 London bombings. Instead, he described the attacks as “mujahidin activity” which would make people “wake up and smell the coffee”.
It is understood that the arrest is connected to a speech he gave in the West Midlands area - thought to be Birmingham - last year and not to the barracking of John Reid.
Izzadeen, formerly Trevor Brooks, an electrician born in the Caribbean who converted to Islam in his teens, was pictured live on television in September shouting at Mr Reid, who had gone to address Muslims after a controversial raid police raid in Forest Gate, East London.
Amid anger over Mr Reid’s call for Muslim parents to look out for the signs of brain-washing in their children in the fight against terrorism, Izzadeen interrupted the Home Secretary and launched into a tirade.
“How dare you come to a Muslim area when over 1,000 Muslims have been arrested?” he said. “You are an enemy of Islam and Muslims, you are a tyrant. Shame on all of us for sitting down and listening to him."
Izzadeen is said to be a former spokesman for the radical Islamic group al-Ghurabaa, an offshoot of al-Muhajiroun - both of which are now banned in the UK.
The radical Muslim leader, Anjem Choudhury, responded to news of the arrest by saying that Muslims were now the subject of a “witchhunt”.
Mr Choudhury said: “The Muslim community are subject to a witch hunt and I see this as a continuation of that witch hunt by the Blair regime.”
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “A 31-year-old man was arrestedin Leyton High Road this morning under section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006 for allegedly encouraging terrorism as a result of ongoing inquiries.”

Aside from the article..
The link for this story read "muslim who barracked John Reid is arrested". This is clearly a lazy and inflamitory remark. if joe blogs gains notoriety for some folly and is then arrested on other serious charges, the story link would not read "christian who blah blah"
By all means refer to the man as a radical / extremist / radical islamist / jihadist.
If i was living in a muslim country and a christian extremist (there are plenty of them too) did something stupid and potentialy damaging to religious relations, i would not want to be associated with him. But if i then picked up a paper and glanced at the headline which simply said "Christian arrested for terrorism", I would feel like I had been blamed in some small way.
just a thought.
alex, wilmslow,
Why is he in our country if he believes we are all infidels? Deport him and the like.
Mick, Stoke, England
Excellent.
It disgusts me seeing people like him represented in the media, so its very satisfying when the law also finds them unnacceptable and arrests them.
Joe, Manchester,
About time.
SuperMario, Yorkshire,
There is no need for anti-terror legislation. It politicises the legal system and gives free advertising to terrorists. Conspiracy to cause an explosion, the unauthorised possession of firearms and behaving in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace were already crimes long before the "terror" label was stuck on them. Let's dump the spin and get back to British justice, which is fully capable of dealing with the offenders in question.

"Abu Izzadeen, born as Trevor Brooks in Hackney, east London, to a family originally from Jamaica" - when I was studying A Level English quarter century ago we read a play about guests who mistook their destination for an Inn. They revealed what they were really like and the opinions they held of their hosts. I wonder why this play comes to mind.

Thats what you get for questioning the government!
Arthur, Newcastle,
I don't know how PC my comment is, however, I care little for that. I do not think that Islam is compatible with Europe. Please when you're thinking of immigration or terror, think first of demographics. If you have to have immigration for economic reasions, Encourage more immigration from non-Muslims as well as Athiest and secular Muslims, since they simply are more apt to intigrate into your society and less likely to want to undermine the whole culture as you know it today, and as you have for centuries. Watch out carefully for the population growth of the Muslim community, set against the average growth rate of the indigenous as well as other ethnic and religious communities - the next census being 2011. I'm myself an immigrant from a Muslim country, and I claim to know more what I'm talking about. If you think it's hard to approach this subject today, the consequences of ignoring it will be even harder tomorrow. For those who want UK to keep the humanist, secular, liberal tradition of welcoming everyone, I say just make sure that you do all you can, legally and peacefully, to still be able to have a humanist, secular, liberal - not to mention 'Christian' - country to welcome people into, for time to come.
S. Soleiman, London, Uk,
It's about time the police arrested this mad-man, I hope he is never allowed to spread hate again. Abu Izzadeen is not a spokesman for me or any Muslim. Terrorism is unacceptable, it is wrong! Killing innocent people is against God's teachings, as the Quran teaches that murdering one innocent person is equivalent to murdering all of humanity!
My advice to this man is to go back to the true teachings of Islam, and give up on his misguided beliefs. He gives Islam and Muslims a bad name.
Hassan Mustafa, Newcastle,
Britain is a Police State. People are now arrested for what they say, not what they do.

"expel the negative propaganda that has been launched against us"
It's not propaganda. The media report the disturbing and unacceptable facts, the 'bad news', as they always do. Its no different with political parties, foreign countries, or anything else. There is indeed a sickness within Islam; you acknowledge it.
"if you are aware of a person who wishes to harm others, then it is your duty as a decent human being and as a Muslim to report them It is not against our beliefs! "
WHY DOES THIS EVEN NEED SAYING? - think about it! It needs saying, because its a problem.
The "beliefs" of a substantial minority of your brothers inspire them to hatred, hostility, and violence. Why dont you join the modern world, and practise the art of independent critical thinking?
"we can dispel the myth that we sympathise or collaborate with terrorists."
THOUSANDS of moslems are under police and MI5 surveillance. Over 10,000 sympathise with Al Qaeda - independent poll. In Holland, there's 60% Dutch Moslem sympathy/support for the murder of Vin Gogh. While your platitudes express a moral position, they neither address nor acknowledge the facts.
Joe, UK,
This is the guy who openly stated his desire to be a suicide bomber and has called for the murder of non-muslims, praised the 9/11 and 7/7 murderers and wants 3 wives.
Oh, on Radio 4 he also said his intention was to set up a Shariah state in the UK without following the democratic process.
Bless.
Ted, London, UK
As a Muslim, I applaud the police for their efforts in combating extremists and those who threaten everyones life. Terrorism is wrong, taking innocent life is wrong, and I encourage my fellow Muslims to take a stand against the cancer of extremism in our midst! If we the Muslim community wish to expel the negative propaganda that has been launched against us then we must work hard to sort out our house.
Enough complaining about the police, they are here to protect us all! Instead of complaining we should aid them, I dont say spy on your community but if you are aware of a person who wishes to harm others, then it is your duty as a decent human being and as a Muslim to report them. It is not against our beliefs! Our beliefs do not say that we should protect those of us who do wrong! So please lets all try to help each other make things better. At least then we can dispel the myth that we sympathise or collaborate with terrorists.
