COLIN MONTGOMERIE, the Scottish golfer, married for the second time yesterday in a lavish ceremony on the banks of Loch Lomond.
Montgomerie, 44, tied the knot with Gaynor Knowles, 41, a wealthy furniture heiress, at the exclusive Loch Lomond golf club in a ceremony said to have cost £1m overall. They were joined by more than 340 guests including such celebrities as Jodie Kidd, the supermodel, and Alan Hansen, the television football pundit. Their seven children from previous marriages were also present.
Montgomerie wore full Highland dress for the civil ceremony, which followed two days of celebrations including a private golf tournament for guests.
Yesterday morning, the Ryder Cup veteran played one hole of golf with each competing group of guests. The teams included Padraig Harrington, the winner of last year's Open at Carnoustie, Sam Torrance and Ryder Cup colleagues Lee Westwood, Paul Casey and Robert Karlsson.
The brief wedding ceremony was conducted in a giant marquee in the grounds of 18th-century Rossdhu House. Entertainment for the subsequent festivities was provided by Bjorn Again, the Abba tribute band. Montgomerie had hoped to hire Robbie Williams to entertain wedding guests, but the singer is in America.
Another of Montgomerie's close friends, the actor Hugh Grant, also missed the ceremony because of a prior commitment.
Montgomerie's marriage to his first wife, Eimear, collapsed in 2004. The divorce cost him about £8m of his estimated £25m fortune.
Knowles was widowed in 2003 when her husband of 16 years, George Knowles, a successful businessman who founded Sterling of Tillicoultry, died from a heart attack on a yacht off Majorca as he celebrated his 41st birthday.
She was left with a £2m Perthshire home, a villa in Majorca, a £1m collection of classic cars and a fortune estimated at £20m.
The pair were introduced to one another by Dougie Donnelly, the Scottish television presenter, at Gleneagles' Strathearn restaurant in 2005. Montgomerie proposed at the same place last year.
The couple soon became inseparable. In 2006, during the BMW International Open, Montgomerie spent £30,000 to charter a jet to fly them from Germany to Glasgow to attend a Robbie Williams concert.
Montgomerie has had one of the finest golfing careers in European Tour history, with a record eight Order of Merit titles, seven in a streak from 1993 to 1999, and 31 European tour victories, placing him third on the all-time list.
However, he also holds the dubious distinction of being one of the most accomplished players never to have won a major championship after finishing runner-up on five occasions.
Also married yesterday was Hannah McConnell, the daughter of the former first minister. McConnell, 29, a junior manager with the British Council in London, married Jack Harris, 29, a barrister, at a church in Stirling.
“My beautiful daughter is marrying a very nice young man in the heart of Scotland,” said her father Jack McConnell.
