Daniel Bedingfield, the singer, has suffered head and neck injuries in a car accident in New Zealand.

The 24-year-old star is still in hospital two days after the crash but his condition is not serious, his spokesman said.

New Zealand-born Bedingfield was driving a 4x4 vehicle near Whangarei in the north of the North Island when the accident happened.

No other car was involved and the 4x4 is understood to have left the road.

Bedingfield was trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle and had to be cut free by firefighters, his spokesman said. His passenger was unhurt.

A spokesman for the star's record company Polydor said: "Daniel was on holiday in New Zealand when he was involved in a car crash. He suffered head and neck injuries and remains in hospital for observation. He is conscious and chatting and the doctors say he will be fine."

Bedingfield moved to London when he was three months old. He spent Christmas in New Zealand with his family and planned to stay for several weeks.

The star shot to fame two years ago when he went straight to number one with his debut single Gotta Get Thru This, which he recorded in his bedroom.

Since then he has had two more number one hits, If You're Not The One and Never Gonna Leave Your Side.
