The vibrant colours of healthy coral reefs will vanish within half a century unless global warming is controlled, according to researchers.
A 2C (3.6F) rise in temperature could kill 98 per cent of the corals. Rubble, overgrown with seaweed, will show where structures such as the Great Barrier Reef were once found. The rainbow of colours on reefs, whether the corals themselves or the creatures that depend on them, will give way to greens and browns. Yesterday 17 scientists argued in Science that emissions of carbon dioxide, which acidifies the seas as well as warming them, must be controlled if coral reefs are to be preserved. Peter Mumby, of Exeter University, said: “Unless we act now, coral reefs are likely to dwindle into insignificance; they’ll be reduced to seaweed beds, rubble and only a few scattered corals. Coral reefs are the largest living structures on Earth and are home to the highest biodiversity.”

corals absorb carbon dioxide to grow and will suffer tempreture differences far greater than we have so far experienced in global warming. They are degrading and the truth of the matter is nobody really knows why!
Dave Dupree, london, uk
no mike there was not. coral lives in a very specific temp, ph ranges(i would go for possibly jurrasic but the coral animal isn't so well designed for the fossil record....but could good for you looking up the names of those periods but striking out with the epoch i'm afraid . after the el nino effect of '98 many coral areas around the world (caribeann, gulf of thailand, indian ocean) saw a 50% bleaching of the coral sites followed be massive death percentages. Oh and Alan ,
"And so ....... I am sure it's lovely to look at but what purpose does it serve in the grand scale of things"
most stupid statement I've ever heard. idiots abound unfortunately

I lived in the Middle East for 17 years. The Red Sea, which has beautiful coral reefs, is a lot warmer then the Coral Sea which houses the Great Barrier Reef so how come the Great Barrier Reef will die if the temperature of its surrounding water goes up by 2.6 degrees. It's just another panic measure to frighten folks ....... another load of climate change rubbish put about by religious 'climate' fanatics.

I think you'll find they provide a lot of the oxygen in the world although i could be wrong. so they don't just look pretty
Damien, ireland,
What purpose does coral serve? Coral reefs are a foundation of the food chain in the regions where they live. If they die, so will many of the species of fish and other sea life that depend on them. Loss of coral reefs would devastate the fishing industry in large sections of the world. The knock-on effects would be quite serious everywhere, not just in the immediately affected regions.

"Temperature rise could kill all coral"
So, there weren't any coral reefs during the Devonian Period, the Triassic-Jurassic Periods, or the Eocene Epoch?
