BUENOS AIRES A cloud of smoke was over Buenos Aires yesterday after extensive bush fires were started by cattle ranchers and soya bean farmers. The smoke choked the Argentine capital, closing roads, the port and airport, as the pall reached Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital, 140 miles away.
“There's 70,000 hectares (270 sq miles) of fields on fire in the Paraná river delta” north of Buenos Aires, said Florencio Randazzo, the Interior Minister, referring to an area the size of Cape Town.
The smoke filled hospitals with people complaining of respiratory and eye problems and for a few hours closed two main highways.
In southern Uruguay, east of Buenos Aires across the River Plate, the smoke caused delays at three airports. Mr Randazzo blamed the fires on cattle ranchers in Buenos Aires province, north of the capital, who were renewing their grassland. He said firefighters were coping with 300 grassland blazes, some of which needed aircraft support.
The National Institute of Farming and Livestock Technology blamed the fires on farmers clearing land for soya bean crops, Argentina's chief export. Mr Randazzo said they would face charges for environmental harm and damaging health. (AFP)

Today the 24th April as of 1800 hours the smoke continues to disrupt life in the city of Buenos Aires. The smoke pollution continues to damage the environment, and road travel is still extremely dangerous on the highways that are being effected by the smoke. The fires are not yet under control.

Saturday was another horrible day to breathe and go out.
A thick layer of smoke covers the city and all the area. Several days now and it is not going to rain at least until wedenesday.
Those that suffer from allergies (like I do) have no place to hide. the smoke gets inside your house no matter how hard you try to keep everything closed.
Whatever the cause the people that started this are criminals.
We have had several people killed in car accidents because of the smoke.

>> we will never become a great nation.
That's the poblem, isn't it? You're trying too hard to become a great nation.
Get rid of the taxes on the farmers. Let them keep their money. They earned it, why shouldn't they?
Start looking at how much social strife is caused by government policies. Forget about becoming a "great" nation. Become a free one.

Also, Rosario (1.500.000), 300 kms north of Buenos Aires is another city in which the smoke is affecting the people with serious problems in eyes and respiratory system.

The farmers from other nations need to assist the farmers in Argentina by sharing with them alternative methods of farming which do not use the slash and burn approach.
The damage to the environment in terms of oxygen consumption and CO2 pollution is catastrophic. The losses of income to workers in the city of Buenos Aires, the financial losses to air and bus companies, and well as small businesses is hugh. There is also a massive toll due to the large number of people killed in road accidents on the highways resulting from the smoke reducing the visibility.
The small financial return to the few farmers who started the fires is not justified when balanced against the hugh financial costs to the people of Buenos Aires and well as the environment.
The farmers have destroyed trees, wildlife and flora. They have perpetrated a criminal act which should result in them being punished.
It is time to stop the removal of all trees in Argentina.

It's reached Montevideo alright, we can't breathe over here either! Wind sucks lol
Lo, Montevideo, Uruguay
We are visiting Buenos Aires on holiday and can't believe how thick it is. You can't see down three blocks. We are hoping to get some dust masks so we can cut down the intake of smoke.

Yes, we live here also. It is awful. We have tried to seal off one room in our house to sleep in and we are wearing cloths over our faces in the rest of the house and of course out side. We are coughing quite a bit and feel like there is brick in our chests. It is a claustrophobic feeling, like you can't find a place to breathe. I worry about my kids. The moon last night was the color of an eclipsed moon. And the sun went down looking like a pink bouncy ball. It didn't even look like it was giving off any light.
Amber, Buenos Aires, Argentina
I am an Argentine, but it breaks my heart to admit that as long as we keep acting like this ( cover protest -bush fire) we will never become a great nation.
Fabian Almendros, La Plata, Buenos Aires
I am living in argentina and you CAN'T breath
Everybody hast their eyes very sick.
Luckily we are better now because the smoke dissapeared for a while.
