Orang-utans have confounded naturalists by learning to swim across rivers and to fish with sticks.
Naturalists were shocked to see the apes swim across a river to gain access to some of their favourite fruits at a conservation refuge on Kaja island in Borneo. Orang-utans were previously thought to be non-swimmers. The wildlife experts were equally surprised to see an orang-utan pick up a tree branch and stun a fish before eating it. Other apes introduced to the island were seen trying to spear fish with sticks after watching fishermen using rods. The naturalists also noted that the apes quickly worked out that it was even easier to steal fish from unattended lines used by the humans on the island. The unexpected behaviour has been captured in photographs published in the book Thinkers of the Jungle — the Orang-utan Report, by Gerd Schuster, Willie Smits and Jay Ullal, of the Borneo Orang-utan Survival Association. The pictures are thought to be the first to show an orang-utan using a tool for hunting. The apes live in Borneo and Sumatra and are regarded by some as second only to humans in intelligence. They are threatened with extinction as their habitats diminish.

Correction: The organisation looking after these rescued orangutans is the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation.
It is the largest primate rescue project in the world and the only organisation actively rescuing wild orangutans from oil-palm plantations.

Here in the U.S. we have more than our share of politicians aping behavior of deranged, sociopathic wildlife, acting like alpha lunatics to show they are tough, at least with other people's lives.

Lets stick the blatant critics in that jungle bare ass and see how long it takes to stave off their own extinction ?
Maybe the Orangutan would save them before something out there makes them lunch ?

Animals evolving??? God forbid. Must be the work of the Devil.
Kenneth Barrett, Sydney,
There surely is a reason why the verb "ape" means to mimic! Could it be because apes mimic (i.e. that orangutans ape human behavior)? Birds use pebbles to crack open shells. Cave men use fire to attract Jane. Bill uses a curved banana to lure unsuspecting prey into his love-lair. What's new?
Rob, Texas, USA
If they are so smart let them stave off their own extinction.
Gregg, Plattsburgh,
It is amazing that human beings are so ignorant. Why should we think that these fabulous creatures cannot do such tasks. If we gave them their habitat back they would probably be able to expand their activities and amaze us ignorants even more.
Jim Wills, Brisbane, Australia
They dont mention the fact that these apes were re-introduced to the wild. Very convenient omission me thinks.

Roddy Macdowell didn't make any predictions in "The Planet of the Apes" .The character he played,Dr. Cornelius was the one who made the prediction.
Tim, Oxnard, USA
It makes sense... we, as humans, are constantly 'evolving'. As are the Orangutans. Pretty cool!

How long before they learn how to use chips and newspapaers?
Richard Cooper, Dunstable,
Compared to Humans and Chimpanzees, Orangutans seem to be much gentler creatures. One of the Orangutans who played Clyde in the 2 Clint Eastwood movies was beaten to death by his trainer.
Will Rose, Silver City,New Mexico, United States
How long before orangutans start cutting hip hop tracks, sponging off welfare and forming roving crime gangs? Wait, the orangutans are too smart and moral for that.
Johann, New York, USA
The orang utan who lived in London zoo 20 years ago used to dismantle the large climbing frame in her cage and hide the bolts from her keepers. I used to visit her at lunchtimes, she was definitely brighter and of better character than some of my colleagues.
Francesca, London,
While this may be an impressive development in the evolution of orang-utans, have naturalists completely forgotten about Clyde, the beer drinking, street fighting, car driving orang-utan in the 1978 Clint Eastwood film Every Which Way But Loose? That was far more impressive.
Dave Angel, Maidstone, Kent
This story is only the start of it. How long before the Orangs realise that the fish they steal isn't cooked, and start pinching wallets instead and heading for Barneys Fish Bar for a good night out?
Rob, Bristol, UK
"...the apes quickly worked out that it was even easier to steal fish from unattended lines used by the humans on the island"
Won't be long before the fishermen start gunning them down then...
Homer, London,
The result of a review by the PM would be a 'War on Primates'. This would be worrying for me because I live near Monkey World in Dorset.
John Aspray, Lytchett Matravers, UK
Just because humans are incapable of evolving, doesn't mean the apes can't.

John Scott - thank you! That made me laugh.
Andy McC, Livingston,
this is truly an awesome insight into our own possible evolution ,now if us scientist could just flick on one of those genes and we might have the answers to the grand old questions ,,was it God or was it sceince from abroad??
either way truly awesome.

Oh dear ... Roddy Macdowell's Planet of the Apes predictions don't seem too far away !
fil, London, UK
If orang-utans steal something we consider it learning, if humans do it then it is reprehensible. Surely this blatant discrimination in value judgments on the basis of species must be addressed. Perhaps Gordon Brown could set up a review?
