The European beaver is to be reintroduced to the wild in Britain, five centuries after it was hunted to extinction for its fur.
Up to four beaver families will be captured in Norway later this year and released in Knapdale, Argyll, next spring. The trial, run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, was approved by Mike Russell, the Scottish environment minister. “I am delighted that this wonderful species will be making a comeback,” he said. “They are charismatic, resourceful little mammals and I fully expect their reappearance in Knapdale to draw tourists from around the British Isles - and even further afield.”
Other parts of Europe, with a similar landscape to Scotland, have reintroduced beavers with positive ecological benefits, he added.
“I very much hope to see them flourish in the woods of Knapdale and lay the foundation for a wider reintroduction in other parts of Scotland,” Mr Russell added.
Professor Colin Galbraith, Director of Policy and Advice for SNH today welcomed the decision.
“For the first time we will have the opportunity to see how beavers fit into the Scottish countryside in a planned and managed trial,” he said.
“No other beaver reintroduction project in Europe has gone through such a long, and thorough, process of preparation, assessment and examination.”
Although beavers have been spotted in the wild in isolated cases in the UK, they have usually been caught and returned to zoos, Professor Galbraith added.

Great news! Some other writers have suggested other species be reintroduced and that should also be done. Habitat should be reclaimed for all the species. Land owners
must accept that they need to set land aside for specie revival. The land belongs to all species not just homo sapiens.

Many people here seem to be getting confused between the European Beaver and the American Beaver. European Beavers are far less destructive than their American cousins who are notorious for blocking streams and causing flooding.

If it was'nt for the moans and groans of private landowners and subsidised hill farmers I'm sure many more lost animals could be reintroduced to the wilder areas of our countryside.
Let's hope the reintroduction of the beaver is the beginning of a long term trend.
Peter Clarke, Peebles, Scotland
If you are looking for beavers, we have more than we need here in Canada. We have flooded fields, creeks overflowing their banks, areas of forest stripped of trees all thanks to these little engineers. They are fascinating to watch, but they can be a problem.
David Eve, Oakville, Canada
We have been so long without beavers I am concerned the impact on what remains of our woodlands/forests will be too great. I saw recently a beaver felled a birch tree in one night!! Are we not constantly fighting human impact on our woodlands? I admire and respect the beaver but what cost?

Beavers were reintroduced to Chile some years back.I was told that they had caused considerable damage I think because there were not enough predators in the area.I was in southern Chile at the time some 8 years ago.Is this information correct? There are in fact more predators in Chile than Scotland
