A driver delivering cars from Turkey to Gibraltar got his 32-tonne truck stuck in a lane near Skegness as his machine directed him unerringly towards a nature reserve called Gibraltar Point. Satellite navigation is great at the tiny details, as long as it hasn’t got the general direction hopelessly wrong.

What if the great journeys of history had relied on it? Think of James Cook, tapping New Zealand into the key-pad and sailing off, braced for months at sea, only to wash up hours later on the largest island in Denmark. Or Lewis and Clarke sending postcards to President Jefferson declaring that they had found the Pacific, and it turned out to be a suburb of St Louis, Missouri. And consider poor Dr Livingstone, screaming at his nifty piece of kit as he stands on the forecourt of Cairo’s premier ketchup bottling plant: “I said the sourceof the Nile!”
