Obama flies in to fortress London | Brown urges world leaders to unite | G20 leaders, police and protesters ready as summit comes to town | Jamie Oliver cooks for the G20 | City of London braces itself | Time to reset capitalism's moral compass | Valentine Low: Sketch | Ann Treneman: Sketch
It is among the trickiest of decisions for any hostess. But when Sarah Brown was deciding who to put next to Michelle Obama at tonight’s dinner for summit spouses in 10 Downing Street, she had years of experience in public relations to draw on.
Seated on one side of Mrs Obama will be J. K. Rowling, the author; on the other will be Kelly Holmes, the double Olympic gold medallist.
Naomi Campbell, the model, will also be among the prominent group of women from sport, fashion, business and the arts in attendance.
The menu, prepared by the chef Jamie Oliver, will feature seasonal produce including Welsh lamb, Jersey Royal new potatoes and asparagus from Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly.
The wine list is expected to include the award-winning Nyetimber sparkling wine produced in West Sussex.
Mrs Brown is in charge of the spouses’ programme and has given much thought to tonight’s table plan.
Rowling, the Harry Potter author who wrote the first of her best-selling books when she was living on benefits as a single mother in a mice-infested Edinburgh flat, has long been a vocal Labour supporter. Last year she gave £1 million to the party.
Holmes, 38, who was one of London’s ambassadors for the city’s Olympic bid, served in the Army before winning the 800m and 1500m gold medals at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
Campbell, 38, has admitted to having “anger management problems” and has twice undertaken community service sentences for assault convictions, most recently at a homeless shelter in the East End of London.
Other guests will include Martha Lane Fox, 36, the founder of the website lastminute.com, who survived a near-fatal car crash in Morocco in 2004. The accident left her in hospital for a year. She is now a non-executive director of Marks & Spencer and Channel 4 and a trustee of Reprieve, campaigning on prison reform.
Dame Tanni Grey-Thomson, 39, who won 11 Paralympic gold medals in a sporting career in wheelchair racing until her retirement in 2007, will be there, and Emma Freud, 47, the broadcaster, will also take her place alongside the spouses. She is the great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud, the psychoanalyst.
Also in attendance will be Gurinder Chadha, 49, a film director whose works include Bend It Like Beckham. She was born in Kenya but grew up in Southall, West London. She is a former BBC news reporter who made award-winning documentaries before moving into film work.
The Browns were keen to avoid accusations of extravagance after leaders at the G8 meeting in Japan last July were served a lavish eight-course meal with 18 separate dishes, including caviar and Kyoto beef. So sensitive have been the arrangements for Jamie Oliver’s dinner menu tonight that the dishes were decided upon only last week.
Oliver, who last cooked at Number 10 for Tony Blair and Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in 2003, has pledged to offer the very best of British produce.
He said: “It’s always a huge honour to cook at No 10, but to be invited to cook for such an important group of people who are trying to solve some of the world’s major problems, well that really is a privilege.
“I’m hoping that the menu I’m working on will show that British food and produce is some of the best in the world.”
The official lunch for the G20 leaders will be at the ExCeL centre in East London.
