CHARLES CLARKE is ready to challenge Gordon Brown for the Labour leadership if David Miliband fails to mount a bid.
Confidants of the former home secretary say he will consider a leadership challenge to deprive the chancellor of a “coronation” for the top job if the environment secretary refuses to do so.
A bid by Clarke would force a debate on the future of the Labour party and leave Brown little choice but to flesh out where he stands. MPs fear that a coronation without a heavyweight challenge could make the party look undemocratic and go down badly with voters.
Yesterday Clarke told The Sunday Times he would not rule out a challenge to Brown and would “make a judgment” when Tony Blair announces his resignation, expected to be soon after the local, Scottish and Welsh elections on May 3. “I am not going to rule out under any circumstances running,” he said.
Those close to the former home secretary claim he will stand against Brown if Miliband refuses to join the race. “He intends to run a progressive campaign that will force a debate on the party’s future,” said one.
Clarke tried to make light of such talk yesterday, saying it was “very unlikely” he would stand. However, if he were to mount a challenge he insisted it would not simply be to provoke a policy debate within the party.
There would be little for Clarke to lose from a “kamikaze mission” and he is likely to be able to muster the necessary 44 Labour MPs to nominate him for the leadership. A gutsy bid by Clarke would be welcomed in many quarters as a chance to debate Labour’s future openly.
Clarke, along with the former health secretary Alan Milburn, recently launched a campaign calling for a debate on Labour’s “renewal” after 10 years in office. Their 2020 Vision website was seen by MPs as a potential launch pad for a leadership bid.
Clarke is said to believe that Miliband will not stand. Last week the 41-year-old environment secretary endorsed Brown more fully than before but failed to rule out a bid completely. MPs believe Miliband is merely positioning himself for a top job in a Brown government.
Yesterday Margaret Beckett, the foreign secretary, warned Miliband not to become a “human sacrifice” by standing. Peter Hain, the Northern Ireland secretary, warned that Blairites trying to stop Brown appeared to want David Cameron to take power.

Don't bother Charles, you have less of the X factor than Blair or Brown and they don't have much.
judy, Liverpool, england
Charles Clarke would be a preferable Prime Minister to Gordon Brown in my book. Whe he expresses opinions, he sounds like a human being and shows genuine emotion. After all the falseness of the Blair Brown era, he would be a breath of fresh air.
He would put David Cameron under pressure from the same viewpoint.
Henry Curteis, Manila, Philippines
Gordon Brown will not win Labour the next election if he becomes leader. He is bland, lacks charisma, and represents the old guard. This will turn off middle England.
Simon Ottewell, Leeds,
Gordon Brown is not a leader. Some people are better at being number 2.
kt, London,
This must be the April Fool article.....surely?
Fred, London, UK
Brown is the wrong man, in the wrong place at the wrong time and in the wrong party ! The Iron Chancellor is looking really rusty these days - the propaganda that he is has managed the economy so well is wearing thin ! He has played expensive conjuring tricks with the British finances - very few of which is deemed effective or successful. The pensions scandal has come back to haunt him - so it should - Brown has wrecked the future prosperity of many citizens. Yes he's a wrecker - a dour political version of a hoodless vandal ! Forget the press conferences and photo ops, Chancellor - your days are over in the limelight ! Who believes in you anymore ? Someone like Charles Clarke needs to pluck up courage and face this dinosaur - and put him and this great nation out of its misery ! He should tell Gordon to look closely at early retirement . One thing is for certain , Mr Brown's pension pot will not be under any threat from the taxman !! Good riddance !
Dave , Swindon, Wiltshire
What a circus!
Brown is cornered on the pensions scandal and borrowing figures.
Clarke is seen as a bitter figure.
Miliband - at 41 has no experience in doing anything, much less a real job.
Save us from this froth - the media should ignore the posturing.

"Don't waste your time" is all I could say to Charles Clarke!

An exercise in futility.
We no longer have a true democracy. The time has come for the people to express their total contempt for the political class which manipulates everything and rarely if ever listens to the voice of the people. The whole lot live in another land and are so far removed from reality it is destroying our country.
John, Lisbon, Portugal
Sorry, I thought this was the man who was in charge of the Home Office, that was found to be not fit for purpose. Someone needs to have a word with him.
John, Ascot, Berkshire, UK
I saw 'Clarke' thinking 'Ken Clarke' in the headline and so I thought it was to do with leadership of the Tories. Excited with that idea! The man who, as Chancellor, got this economy humming. And wasn't afraid to tackle the really tough issues. But how cheated I felt when I opened the article and saw the photograph. Oh well, silly me...
GC, Harrogate, UK
Is this an April fool joke?
John Meadows, High Peak, Derbyshire
Is he for real? Most of Labour are detested by the public, they have sold out the people of Britain, this man is a joke and a laughing stock, bring it on, we are due for bit of light relief. LOL
We owe no loyalty to the three main parties any more...get used to it. They've forgotten the people they are supposed to represent and will never be forgiven by us.
Parade any one you like to represent Labour...could be a monkey for all we care, their time is up so when will they get the message.?
In ten short years they have desecrated a beautiful country, and my memory is a long one.
Samantha Jones, Bucks, England
Clarke is a bright man but he has become so bitter. Unfortunately he is now linked with the likes of Mandelson and Milburn (M & M?) who appear to be a busted flush. Can't see Clarke or anyone else beating Brown unless he is enveloped by a Pension scandal.
