The future of a Conservative candidate was hanging in the balance last night after he became embroiled in a race row over his campaign literature, The Times can reveal.
Luke Mackenzie, a Tory candidate in a British National Party (BNP) target ward in Basildon, was accused of peddling scare stories by suggesting that people who wanted to stop asylum-seekers being given council houses should vote Conservative.
David Cameron faced calls to disown the candidate last night, but the Conservative Party avoided immediate action, saying that it would examine the election leaflet this week. This contrasted with the swift action last month to dismiss Patrick Mercer from the Tory front-bench after he referred to “black bastards” in the Army.
A Tory spokesman said: “We encourage all councillors to confront the BNP and not to pander to them.”
Mr Mackenzie, who is standing against the local council’s only ethnic minority councillor, told The Times that he did not believe that his remarks would inflame racial tensions because “people were aware of this anyway”.
The leaflet, headed “Conservatives: We’re on your side”, refers to being on the “front line” in a “battle”, talking about local people “getting organised” and “fighting back”.
It says: “I support Conservative policy of giving council housing to Basildon residents and not [of it] being used to house asylum seekers. There is a shortage of homes, but at the same time the Labour Government is encouraging record levels of immigration.”
Opposition politicians said that the remarks were highly inflammatory and echoed the message used by the BNP in other parts of the country.
Mr Mackenzie, a 21-year-old politics student at Westminster University, is standing in the local elections against Labour’s Swatantra Nandanwar in a ward where the BNP took 22.7 per cent of the vote in 2004. The party’s record for the area is 25.3 per cent in the Fryerns ward last year.
This year the BNP is contesting 11 of the 14 seats up for election in Basildon, part of a remarkable surge of activity across the country. It is to field 655 candidates, double the number who stood last time. It currently has 49 council seats.
Mr Mackenzie denied accusations he was stoking up racism. “At the end of the day it’s [the main parties] not saying things like this that is encouraging racism tension because the only place people can turn to is the British National Party.”
He said that there was strong feeling among residents that people from outside the area were causing a housing shortage.
“They blame the influx of immigration [as one reason for this], because there isn’t enough housing in the UK and you’ve got thousands of people coming from abroad.”
Asked what he thought Basildon residents felt about immigration, he said: “They think it’s entirely out of control.” He said that it was a view that he shared, adding: “The cause of this is that there is no real control over who is here.” It is already virtually impossible for asylum seekers to get housing in Basildon after the council changed the system to give preference to people who have been in the area a long time.
Jon Cruddas, a Labour MP and deputy leadership contender who campaigns against the BNP, said: “This dangerous exploitation of people’s fears is a gift to extremist organisations such as the BNP. Peddling myths about immigrants pouring into a town or about asylum seekers supposedly being given council housing ahead of other residents is incredibly unhelpful. If David Cameron is serious about fighting racism he should disown this candidate straight away.”

It seems that most people commenting here.. especially Barry and Margaret don't seem to have any idea about immigration. This country needs over a million economic migrants to sustain economic growth - because British working classes WON'T DO THE NECCESARY JOBS. Immigrants save this country - Immigrants ran the London underground, built the motorways. If you people did any research you would see how ignorant you are being.
Dan, PRESTON, UK
Perhaps if the Tories echoed the BNP a bit more and didn't demonise war hero's who'd been mentioned in Desptaches they wouldn't be leaking voters and supporters like a seive.
Unfettered immigration to a small island nation from hostile Third World countries has to stop, full stop.
The British will be wiped out as a ethnic race in a decade or two if the rot isn't halted.
Blair and Cameron can pretend till the cows come home, the electorate see the mess and have to live with it.
Margaret, Scotland, UK
The British National Party are the only party prepared to resolve issues such as, the NHS in Crisis, Islam a threat to us all, Immigration - enough is enough, New Labour tax rises, the Cost of Europe, Crime and Antisocial behaviour & Housing etc etc.
Lets see what happens on the 3rd May 2007 when the voters will decide.
Simon Towers, Dewsbury,
People should realise that the BNP is the original article. How many times have Tory candidates and Tory governments promised to control immigration/asylum, clamp down very hard on crime and failed to do it? As Le Pen in France rightfully says, why have the cheap copy when you can have the original?
Barry, Brentwood, Essex, United Kingdom
It appears that Bridget has been misguided; in 2006 there were 185000 new homes built according to the National House-Builder Council. Who would you suggest is filling up all these new houses, might it be the indigenous population with its declining birth rates and ageing population? I would expect you to answer this with the normal liberal spin of 'it's more young people living alone.' But in actual fact it is not, just accept that it is indeed the new immigrants pouring into this country in extremely huge numbers instead of sweeping it under the rug and branding anyone who cares to mention the issue 'racist' or 'fascist.' By the way I am only 15 so I sincerely hope that many more people my age can see past the lies touted by the likes of Bridget.
Jon, Newport,
How about blaming those who sold off local authority council housing, and those who have done nothing to stop it since? And those who have done nothing to quell rapidly rising house prices in the South East in general, pricing many hard working people out of the market? Thats why we have a housing shortage. A lack of both affordable and council housing for those who need it. Asylum seekers are unfairly demonised, and only wish to find a better future for themselves, as do we all.
John, South Essex,
I wonder how many of the people commenting here have actually met & listened to asylum seekers and heard their stories or seen where they live and the jobs they do. They do the jobs that no-one wants or that are low-paid. The NHS would collapse without them. They live in teh worst housing. Most get no help from the state at all. Yes there is a shortage of decent housing in many areas. But it's not the (im)migrants' fault, it's because of selling off council houses and not building new ones. British values are about tolerance, resilience and enterprise. We should not fear people who are prepared to travel far and work hard to give their families a decent life, just because they have a different colour or language.
Bridget , London,
I cant believe "Dave's" dictatorial style of leadership, he puts Blair to shame.
Anyone not spouting his distinctly anti British litany is thrown to the Racism Police of Old/New Labour who cant see an "ism" without getting a fit of the vapours.
I was a Tory for thirty years, through the bad times the really bad times and the downright embarressing. This silly Toff is "The Messiah"?
Dont be ridiculous, he's a figure of fun with his bike, plastic shoes and 4x4 trailing him.He cant see what he believes is a popular bandwagon without an unseemly scramble aboard!
I shall be voting BNP, so are my PTA group, if Daves interested (which I doubt) and all of our husbands and friends. Two or three of them are protest votes, granted...but mine isn't, not by a long shot.
Felicity, Edinburgh, UK
Can't people see that this man is actually telling the truth. MigrationWatch points out that 200 new homes a day in England are needed to house new immigrants for the next 19 years. These projections coming from a pro-immigration government could suggest that the number of houses needed might actually be greater.
John, Newport,
I hope David Cameron shows some backbone and supports him. This government cannot even say how many immigrants ,illegally or not,are here. The immigration system is totally out of hand.yes,I know, the majority of us have ancestors who settled here from other countries, mine did,the BIG difference is they lived in appaling conditions and did not get any benefits. The reason my ancestors came here was because they were hounded out of their own countries, those coming here now are not in fear of their lives.
eliozabeth, maresfield, sussex
So we can safely assume that all Tories left standing are pro-immigration, anti British worker and pro the rise of the Islamification of Britain.?
That's okay by me but I need to know where my valuable two votes are going.
As another poster said we get two in Scotland one for the Scottish Parliament which thanks to PR is a very "diverse" place indeed.
Thanks Dave for clearing up any lingering doubts I had as I'm against any more unfettered immigration from hostile foreign lands.
Looks like its a doubler for the BNP.
Jamie, Scotland, UK
To steve, near dundee- by struans garage..........
..............in response to your question "are you a BNP member?" -
No, not yet, but will be voting for their candidate standing in Forfar next month, and, if when they get a worthwhile number in parliament, I will judge their actions against their words, and then, who knows?!?!?
Martin, Forfar, Great Britain
Well said Paul James. Rather 'nasty' to hide behind a few intials 'AK' ; he obviously does not support his own preferred party's freedom of information principle. He should go and see the new film about the Stasi; if this doesn't cure him of socialism, a holiday to North-Korea might do the trick.
By the way , is this Swatandra the same "Swatty" Nandanwar who as a lone lefty was blogging on the DT? His Basildon activities might perfectly explain why we have been missing him for weeks. Still, I hope he thoroughly loses and the BNP wins.
The big parties, both in GB and continental Europe, all deserve contempt for their decades-long betrayal and their stifling of any serious election debate about mass-immigration of cultural aliens by labelling those opposed as racists, and going ahead with it, regardless of what opinion polls have been telling them for eternity.
Jake Foreman, Sussex, England
Looks like another tory head for the block-
It does not matter what the individual says publicly, as the tofs and liberals who "run" the new tory party are no different to the rest of the big three - they have to pander to all ethnic minority voters - cause if they dont- the their vote will go elsewhere.
Good luck to all the 827 BNP candidates - who have bravely put their heads above the parapet
PS, Martin fae Forfar- are you a bnp member?.
steve, near dundee- by struans garage,
It is the truth and of course Nu Labour will attack the UK population in defence of illegal immigrants
Gary, Oldham,
The indigenous population of this country need a political party to represent them, if the BNP are the only party to give them that representation then so be it.
John Salkeld, Sheffield, England
Oh dear, yet another clash between a Tory who tells the truth, and thereby automatically assists the BNP by confirming the validity of its argument; and Tory Central Office which wants its candidates to give the impression of appreciating voters' concerns, but not to the extent of actually saying anything to which they can subsequently be held.
Labour then wades in with words like "myths" and
"supposedly" which implies that what the BNP says is not true : but carefully avoids actually saying that directly, because they know very well the BNP can actually prove their case with direct quotes and Labour's own documentation.
Boy, how "unhelpful" it is that the presence of the BNP
has put a stop to the previous Lab-Lib-Con pact to either tell the same lies or avoid the subject altogether.
L Stewart, Spalding, England
The BNP used to be violent thugs, and some were prosecuted. It appears they're now the 'New BNP', with educated and articulate leaders. They should never be given power, and they never will be - on the whole, they are demonised and reviled so "BNP sympathies" is an automatic, witch hunt term of abuse.
However, as a detached and non-voting observer, I currently like the existence of the BNP because they stand in direct opposition to the growing hostilities amongst Moslems. Not only do they deserve each other, but the latter make the BNP look like teddy bears. Its really not surprising BNP influence is growing, in areas where society is increasing blighted by this Islamic problem: the issue they currently focus on. Both are extreme, and discrediting the BNP needs revising in terms of this wider contemporary context.
Joe, Manchester,
Perhaps this renegade Tory listened to his constituents ..shock ...horror!
As a Tory I'm sad to see the party become Labour Lite, so I'll be using my two Scottish votes for the BNP.
Thanks to PR they have a good chance of getting into the Tartan Talking Shop.
helena, Scotland, UK
Another one bites the dust......just for telling the truth.
Dave, Notts, UK
Why is it that when anyone talks honestly about asylum and immigration there is a "race row".
I don't believe that anyone travelling half way across the world to claim asylum in this country is geniune. The real refugees are the ones who leave their country to a neighbouring country with only their shirt on their back.
We need to stop asylum completely and put the money (along with other countries) into providing temporary safe areas in the conflict region so that people can return home at some point.
There are no myths about immigration. Just open your eyes in many parts of London to see the results of the immigration shambles. Liberals call it vibrant, others call it a dump.
j b, london,
AF UK
The Conservatives are NOWHERE near as nasty as New Labour. If we don't stop the invasion of this country, Enoch Powell's words may come to haunt us all.People are running out of patience with one sided discrimination;open your mouth to challenge it and the Labour Clones scream racism. Pathetic.
Michael J Rigby, Chorley, England
In the rural area I live where there is very little work, a very nice, hard working, intelligient local person went for a job and was not given one. That same day, the employer took on one hundred immigrants.
At the main line station near here, the taxi rank owners ask the council for licences for two more taxis. They were told they can only have the licences if they employ immigrants. A taxi driver told me that the English taxi drivers have to go through several tests each year including a complete Police check. He said that immigrants do not have to do this as noone knows where they come from. So the problems in London with criminals/rapists driving taxis could happen here - all encouraged by the Government.
Immigrants are being one all over the place although the indigeonous population around here must be one of the most kind, intelligient, sensible and hard working there are. I believe the government are threatening employers that they have to take on immigrants.
Ben, English Shire, England
'Why does the journalist not source this line:
"It is already virtually impossible for asylum seekers to get housing in Basildon after the council changed the system to give preference to people who have been in the area a long time. "
Surely someone must have told him this, or is he an expert on housing in Basildon?
Jonny Newton, Cambridge, UK
Many people have read the B.N.P. policies like I did, then I was determined to joined them
There are no racism bigotry jackboots in the B.N.P. just honest discussed policies that will be in favour of the British people, the working class and British taxpayer
The mainstream parties are afraid their little world of self-imposed wage perks and pension will be at last exposed then wrecked
john winston beatson, sheffield, england
The candidate is correct - because of Political Correctness these issues can't be raised without someone screaming 'racist'. It's the poor immigration control which is the gift to the BNP - and that's due to the government and a Home Secretary who is not 'fit for purpose'. If this is an issue which is of concern to the voters of Basildon then it should be raised by the candidates. It is time the Tory party stood up to be counted. It's the assault on civil liberties which should be one of the main foci of this election - nevermind 'green' taxes.
Ian, Bristol,
It is crystal clear that the horrendous immigration policies and shambolic procedures of the Labour Government were chiefly responsible for 'gifting' thousands of votes to the BNP in the May 2006 elections, thus causing the election of BNP councillors in certain areas.
Further, as long as Britain remains in the EU we shall continue to absorb hundreds of thousands of EU immigrants. All this assists the BNP at elections. It is a truism to say that the Labour Government isn't fit for purpose.
Keith Standring, Bexhill-on-Sea, UK
Your conservative candidate may say one thing in your local area .But the national party needs support from members of the C.B.I; who are in favour of immigration to help this countrys economy grow. Its funny how this country likes to export democracy and freedom to other countries ;( very poorly in Iraq) but if anyone comes here after trying it in their home country (eg Zimbabwe) we send them home to be tortured.
The restrictions on asylum seekers are now very tough and applications have fallen .There is still a problem with illegal immigration but it won,t stop your average B.N.P ,UKIP or Conservative member from ordering a chinese takeaway( many illegal workers ). Employing a foreign cleaner ,getting their plumming done cheap for cash from a east european. Or in the case of previous UKIP Leader have their house rebuilt by Polish workers. Hypocrites all, stop hating and get on with your lives.
Dave, lewisham,
I wonder who "Ak" voted for at the last election.
The REAL nasty part is in power. Think facial scans, talking lamposts, cctv, fingerprinting of small children, 90 days detention, passport interviews, micro - chipped wheelie bins, cctv plus 450,000 requests to monitor peoples telephone calls, e-mails and post by secret agencies and other authorised bodies..
Paul James , Banury ,
its o.k. to lie and cheat to get elected and damn the consequences. Great example of British democracy for the world?.
joe cole, watford, engand
There is no doubt that immigration to our country has to stop..... NOW! .....all illegals should be deported (I understand that Jack Straw has plans to allow them to stay!) and legals already here encouraged to leave. The only party to declare its intention to do so is the BNP.
No party proposes to do what everyone wants done, but the voter must vote for the party which will do most of these things.
By the way, Kevin of Kent, I believe that the BNP will have a party in every constituency in future elections.
Martin, Forfar, Great Britain
The only way to defuse the asylum seeker issue is for all costs of asylum seekers to be funded from the foreigh aid budget where it belongs. The numbers should be be closely monitored and conditional on there being no criminal offence that would warrant a custodial sentence having been committed either in the home country or on arrival here.
We also have a problem that asylum seekers are admitted to other EU countries and end up here because English is the second language of much if not most of the world.
David Cage, Highworth, UK
Good luck to the BNP - if they were standing in my area I would vote for them.
Kevin, Kent,
David has got to be firm and show his leadership on this one. The Tories hopes of winning the next General Election lie in the hands of Lib-Dem voters in the key marginals.
An inkling that there might be a u-turn to the bad old days of Michael Howard would alienate this support at a stroke.
This chap should be axed. If he wants to talk like the BNP, then he should go and join the BNP and not taint our party with his out of date racist rhetoric.
Pauline, Hornchurch, UK
The much famed tolerance of the British is being strained to breaking point by the uncontrolled mass migration which the Blair government has promoted, as is the tax system. Belatedly the social and economic costs in the provision of public services and housing is being realised.
The welfare state planned in the 1940's was not designed or costed to provide for wave after wave of migrants. While the Chancellor finds ever more stealthy ways to raise taxes to the highest level of any developed country, Blair only speaks of the "benefits" of migration.
As the Home Secretary himself acknowledged recently immigration is the greatest challenge facing the countries of Europe. Last November a work permit regime was hurriedly introduced for non-EU citizens to safeguard British jobs. In August this year it seems that 8,000 to 14,000 UK trained doctors will be unemployed and the Department of Health has therefore effectively placed a ban on the recuitment of non-EU doctors.
John Collins, Bromley, Kent,
According to a recent report for the OECD Britain is suffering from an exodus of skilled people. In the last 6 years almost 300,000 professional and managerial people left Britain for Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America for a variety of reasons not least because of the lack of opportunities, the fact that companies choose to employ people between the ages of 24 and 49 and unfettered immigration. In the same period 750,000 workers from the eastern Europe bloc, most of them unskilled or low-skilled and less than a third professional, moved here leading to a general de-skilling of the the British workforce. The indigenous population is and has been concerned over immigration for the last decade because it has led to unnecessary and unwanted pressure on public services especially health, education and public transport and to overcrowding because of increased housing demands. Worse, politicians from all sides of the house have ignored this widespread concern and are playing ostrich!
Kenneth Armitage, Suffolk, England
For some reason every Tory candidate seems to have a little Boris Johnson in them: a spoiled fifteen-year-old playing at being a naughty boy from the upper crust, and crust it most certainly is. Older members include Norman Tidbit but there are so many!
Christopher Hobe Morrison, Middletown, Middletown, Orange County, NY
Of course Luke Mackenzie is right.
Only the establishment would even think of denying it. Whatever Jon Cruddas thinks , "Myths" about immigrants pouring into a town are a harsh reality for many people - I personally have links with the westcountry, and I can definitely say that it's changed dramatically in the last 5 years.
Labour and the tories can apply all the spin they like, but I don't believe them, and I shall be voting BNP henceforth.
lawrence brooker, london, england
The BNP hold the seat. Therefore the only way the Tory can win is by persuading people who formerly voted BNP to switch, which means listening to their concerns over multiculturalism.
Malcolm McLean, Bradford, UK
It is what we have come to expect of the Tories over the years.
They didn't get the tag "The Nasty Party" for nothing.
Seems like they never learn
AF, UK,
