The first signs of problems with this year’s internet voting trials have been discovered, with a candidate’s name matched to the wrong party logo.
Election officers in the Wellington ward of Rushmoor Borough Council in Hampshire had to scramble to correct the online ballot form after the Conservative candidate’s name appeared next to the Labour emblem. The mistake was spotted by the Labour candidate, who logged on shortly after 6am on Thursday, when the online ballot opened. He called the returning officer and the error was corrected within 40 minutes.
All the main parties have accepted that the error was probably caught soon enough not to comproimse the result. If the ballot had been running with the incorrect labels any longer, the election in Wellington ward would have been declared void and rerun.
Rushmoor expects more than 6,000 people to use internet voting and 7,500 to vote early by post. The council is one of 12 taking part in voting trials in England and Wales.
Concerns have emerged about the way the systems have been introduced rapidly and secretly. The Open Rights Group-monitoring organ-isation believes that internet voting systems are vulnerable to attacks on the server where the vote is stored and on the computer used to cast the ballot.
An Electoral Commission report on e-voting in the local elections in 2003 estimated that the technique increased the number of people voting by up to 5 per cent.

With Internet voting starting on 26 April at 6.00 a.m., I wanted to claim to have gone into an early lead in the election for Wellington Ward by casting my vote when Rushmoor's iVOTE site opened.
However, I found there were two errors on the Internet ballot paper: the Conservative Party candidate had the Labour Party logo beside his name and was described as the "Conservation Party" candidate.
I therefore contacted Rushmoor's Electoral Registration Officer immediately. As a result, the problem was resolved by 06.56 a.m., following contact with the suppliers. In addition, Rushmoor accessed the system and confirmed that only one vote had been cast in Wellington Ward prior to the correction. They had no idea who the voter was or for whom they voted. However, as my vote was recorded at 06.41 a.m., I could confirm that no one was affected adversely - and that I voted for myself!
Rushmoor also confirmed that no other wards were affected - so all was saved by Rushmoor's prompt action.

Yet another Labour idea to make voting less secure, and more vulnerable to error and outright fraud.
The only truly safe, democratic system is one where every citizen who wants to vote, has to go to the polling station and deposit their ballot, with exceptions to this rule limited to absolutely genuine cases such as the bed-ridden, and Armed Forces abroad.
Of course, Labour would thereby lose probably hundreds of thousands of votes.
