The transition blog | No kiss, just a handshake | Brown's first speech
Gordon Brown will establish today a new department for children and schools as he breaks with the Blair era with the biggest Cabinet shake-up since Labour came to power.
After the longest transfer of power between prime ministers in modern times, Mr Brown began a radical reorganisation of Whitehall last night, reflecting his pledge to “change” Britain.
It was also a momentous day in which Mr Blair left the Commons for the last time to a standing ovation from all sides, and then resigned as an MP by the evening as he was confirmed in his job as a Middle East envoy.
In another surprise move it emerged that Mr Brown was discussing with Baroness Williams of Crosby, a former Liberal Democrat leader in the Lords and former Labour minister, an appointment to a foreign affairs advisory post.
Earlier he had promised to bring in a “government of all the talents” and further nonpolitical appointments are expected tomorrow.
Mr Brown has also decided to split the Department for Education into two; one for young people and schools and the other for higher education and skills. That will mean two education ministers in the Cabinet for the first time. Ed Balls, Mr Brown’s long-term economic adviser, was tipped to enter the Cabinet and take charge of the new children’s department.
As Mr Brown began the biggest Cabinet shake-up since 1997, Margaret Beckett and Patricia Hewitt left their jobs as Foreign Secretary and Health Secretary.
Alistair Darling appeared set to take over as Chancellor from Mr Brown and David Miliband was being strongly tipped to succeed Mrs Beckett at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Jack Straw is expected to be Justice Secretary.

I believe that Gordon Brown has an amazing opportunity to make a positive different, yet he is trying too hard to impress rather than improve Britain. Since he's came into power he has gone flat out on new ideas, new laws and considering doing a million different things, yet his priorities are not as they should be.
The one thing i believe that Gordon Brown has so fatally got it wrong, is his take on the Academic system, in which he would like to replace those teachings of such figures as Churchill, and Martin Luthor King and other key historical figures which represent our freedom and heritage, with, what he calls; 'more relevant issues' such as drug talks and sex talks. should these 'more relevent issues' be kept within a SOCIAL context? How dare he change our education? Mr Brown is not seeking votes and considering the viewpoints from the people who these changes will truly effect, the next generation such as todays students and university undergraduates.is he truly fit for MR PM?

Brown has his chance to reconnect with the nation but he can only do that if he listens and then acts on their behalf.
For far too long the loonie left 'do-gooders' of the labour party have directed our finances to support every conceivable cause and concern other than those which affect UK residents.
Taxation has become a joke as it middle and lower class Britain which pays the bill, whilst those in the higher income bracket get off virtually scot free.
Those who have paid their dues religiously and are now retired or approaching retirement, are facing mounting tax bills, particularly council tax which they can no longer afford to pay.
There is vociferous demand for a tax system which provides for contributions based on the ability to pay.
This is your chance Mr Bown - don't blow it!

Mr Brown seems to forget that we have been watching him in action for the past 10 years. We already know him to be a pompous, devious, deceiving, mean minded and mean spirited politician.
Gordon Brown is the man directly responsible for the collapse of much of our private pensions system. Gordon Brown is responsible for overall taxation rising substantially. Gordon Brown is responsible for the current prison overcrowding. Gordon Brown is directly responsible for our troops being under-trained and under-equipped.
A few grand words as he finally becomes Prime Minister cut no ice with me.

Is Gordon Brown guilty as the chief assassin after all? The clever scheming behind the scenes to steal some MPs and other prominent people from opposing parties is reminiscent of the skulduggery when six Gordon Brown supporters resigned in unison last year and fatally wounded Tony Blairâs premiership. Stalin arranged for Ice Pick deliveries to his enemies. Fatal blows can come in many forms but the dark planner behind them is the real danger.

Congratulations Mr. Brown. God bless the U.K. and you.
As an European-American (to be politically correct in this insecure and immature country), I hope, you will not be another puppet of this self-proclamed leader of the free world. Bush and Blair made enough enemies. Be remembered who made peace and helped stop senseless killings, rather than who listened to no one.
