GEORGE GALLOWAY, the MP who campaigned against the Iraq war, is to be suspended from parliament over his links to the United Nations oil-for-food programme in Iraq.
The parliamentary standards watchdog will rule this week that Galloway failed properly to declare his links to a charitable appeal partially funded from money made by selling Iraqi oil under Saddam Hussein, according to a source close to the inquiry. The one-month suspension for Galloway, often referred to as “Gorgeous George”, is one of the most severe given to an MP.
Galloway, who was expelled from Labour, is now an MP for the Respect party. He may also be asked to apologise to the Commons for his behaviour but will launch a robust defence of his conduct. He denies any wrongdoing.
The UN oil-for-food programme was set up to allow Saddam to sell Iraqi oil to buy humanitarian supplies, but he corruptly awarded oil contracts to politicians and businessmen around the world.
In 1998 Galloway founded the Mariam Appeal, which campaigned for the lifting of sanctions on Iraq. The appeal, which paid Galloway’s wife and funded international travel for the MP, received almost £450,000 from Fawaz Zureikat, a Jordanian businessman who was also a trustee of the appeal. It subsequently emerged that more than half of this money came from the proceeds of Iraqi oil sales. An investigation by the American Senate alleged that the Mariam Appeal was used by the Iraqi regime to finance Galloway.
However, the MP strenuously denies that he was complicit in any such arrangement and claims he is the victim of a smear campaign. He says he had no idea that the money donated had come from Iraqi oil sales.
The Mariam Appeal, which raised more than £1.4m, has never filed any accounts and the parliamentary authorities have been unable to account for some of the expenditure.

the british parliament brings shame to itself in front of all peace loving people in the world. one george galloway is bigger than the rest lot in the parliament.
monkhe, orpington,
I watched Mr. Galloway stand up to the American congress when it came to the war issue. Galloway has honor, guts and integrity. I would gladly stand with Mr. Galloway. As one person stated "its hard to stand firm on what you know is right" and I agree.
Speed to you George Galloway!
goddog, Beulah, Michigan / USA
George Galloway, get a dictionary and look up the meaning of the word hypocrite.
alexandria, Sheffield, UK
Leave George alone. It's so tiresome that 'they' are always out to get him. It's not easy standing up for what's right, if it was we'd all do it. Few have the courage and are willing to risk their incomes, reputation etc. George has plenty of courage, and we all need him whether we realise it or not.
Beverley Kirwan, Preston, Britain
if anyone wants to know more about the allegations against galloway i suggest you watch the video where he defends himself against the us senate, and qmakes a mockery of the allegations by refuting them with facts one after the other. you can find it on youtube just type in galloway us senate.
Richard Hall, Bristol,
Erratum. I did of course mean Oona King, previously the member for Bethnal Green and Bow.
Henry Percy, London, UK
It looks like 6 to 1 in favor of Galloway.
That being the case, then Britain deserves her fate
B Dubya, Oswego, NY, USA
Galloway is an idiot, but this latest attack by Parliament has really gone too far.
If we don't do something about this alarming erosion of our political system and what is left of our brittle democracy, we might as well write off the last two world wars as a total waste of time.
At this rate a person could even consider supporting Respect as a statement to Parliament that these Isles have long rid ourselves of a feudal form of government.
Brian Howard, Redding, UK
How can anyone seriously call Galloway anti-war or pro-peace. He' s not a pacifist by a long shot, he's simply on the other side. Given the choice of siding with, as he does, Hamas, Hezbullah, Bashar al Assad or Saddam Hussein, or with G.W. Bush and Tony Blair, I for one know where I stand. Do you?
Peter, Frankfurt, Germany
Galloway likes to deflect the obvious charge that he was a friend of the former Iraqi regime by saying that he met Saddam "only twice", "as many times as Donald Rumsfeld", as if that proved anything. But he also admitted meeting the government's number two, Tariq Aziz, more than 10 times, and being friends with him. That's interesting. The number 2 of a fascist government that gasses its own people. Those are the friends of Galloway. Top dogs in a fascist government. He knew about the massacres, he knew that it was a violent police state, he saw the aggressions against Iran and Kuwait. And yet, still good friends, no problem, no moral conflict. What a fine person! So whatever you think about the Iraq war, fair enough. But nobody with an ounce of morality should be defending Galloway. Just look at the facts: why should a "socialist" MP from the UK be so close to fascists from another country? Isn't that odd?
Edward Christie, Vienna, Austria
George Galloway was supposed to start a debate this Wednesday (18th July 2007) in the House of Commons on First Solution Money Transfer Ltd and the current money transfer industry in the UK as whole. First Solution Money Transfer Ltd went bust end of June, leaving behind upto £15m in debts. This could have been avoided if the current UK money transfer industry was regulated. Something which is planned for 2009. To little too late for the 2000 people who have suffered as a result of First Solution Money Transfer Ltd not being regulated.
Nanu Miah, London, UK
For anyone interested in seeing an example of an honorable man, watch Mr George Galloway shred these two-faced, hypocrite US senators during their attempted lynching of him here in the US.
www.informationclearinghouse.info/article8869.htm
Norm, Stevenson, Washington USA
Ok, let me get this right. George Galloway is being suspended from the Commons because he gave birth to a charity which received donations from an individual, Fawaz Zureikat. This individual is accused of raising his wealth by accepting money from Saddam Hussein's Iraq. How on earth can Galloway be punished for the crimes of Fawaz Zureikat? Surely it should be Fawaz Zureikat who should be tried and not George Galloway. This is a scandal, and I hope everyone is fully aware that the Mariam Appeal was born to raise awareness of the horrific effects that UN sanctions were having on the children in particular, in Iraq. If there is any wrong doing in this arena, then it should be the UK/US politicians who ignored the world when everyone was calling on them to lift the sanctions on Iraq in the 1990âs. Further, suspension should be the fate of those who voted for a war which has resulted in the death of over half a million Iraqiâs. The tragedy here of course is that in our political system, the value and importance of money appears to drastically outweigh the value and importance of the assassinated Iraqi people. Hence, the one who called for peace is prosecuted, yet the ones who called for war and bloodshed trample over our political system with impunity.
Faris, Hereford, UK
this is absolutely ridiculous, george galloway was accused by the senate, he defended himself and was cleared of any wrong doing or personal gain, the allegations came to light after documents were found said to be incriminating to mr galloway, these documens awere proved to be false and galloway won a libel case against the christian science moniter and the telegraph.
this committee has already cleared George of any allegation of personal gain from the Marium Appeal, just as the Charity Commission did, once again, a few weeks ago. The committee judging George is composed of MPs almost all of whom voted for the war and includes two prominent members of the Labour Friends of Israel. In the context of even stalwart Republicans losing faith in the US/UK occupation of Iraq and the complete vindication of everything that George, as one of the most prominent anti-war leaders, predicted, it is hardly surprising that this kangaroo court will seek to impose some penalty on George.
Richard Hall, Bristol,
Who cares? Parliament and UK politics are now discredited after the Iraq debacle. Galloway has more integrity than the rest of the rabble.
Barry K, Lancs,
george galloway has brought the parliament into disrepute HA-HA-Ha PLEASE if any one has done that then should we not look at the mass murderer tony blair, who signed away the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent lives, or maybe the fact that now london and the world as a whole is a much more dangerous place, Whats wrong with this picture, where we demonize the One person who did everything to stop the war and we cheer to the rafters the person who has put in motion a war which will not end for a generation!
Jay stewart, london, u.k.
George is the only sensible person in either house.
This is a nonsense. Vile retribution to silence a voice of reason, a voice that directly counters the madness of the war-mongers with solid, sensible words.
This makes Parliament a mockery. Along with the loss of the Magna Carta, this sort of action demonstrates that the basic principles of a free and fair society have been tossed overboard to serve the selfish needs of the "political class" over and above the needs of the lowly "citizen class".
Rubbish.
David Ross, Perth, Western Australia
George Galloway was one of the few trying to get punitive sanctions lifted against Iraq to save innocent lives. The sanctions imposed by the West caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi children, but this was considered justifiable 'collateral damage' and simply brushed aside by our brave politicians. Tony Blair took us into a war against Iraq on a pack of lies. This illegal war has killed and displaced hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and Mr Blair is the one who should have been suspended from Parliament !
Paul Beaumont, Udonthani, Thailand
First off, the world has never been, or will ever be, the Polyannish paradise the right-wing pines for.. grow up and get over it! Secondly, members of government secretly cavort with Middle-eastern tyrants and Monarchs (see: WTO meeting) but when it's to satiate corporate greed that's just fine; when Galloway does it to feed the hungry it's not. By the way, up is down. All you have done is create a martyr.
Glenn McCarhty, Portland, Oregon
Oh, my stars!
Parliament has lived with the embarrassment of Galloway this long! Why not just continue to ignore the saboteur and traitor in their ranks?
A one-month suspension is a worse mockery than some British life sentences for crimes so heinous they defy description.
God save the English-speaking world from the British disease!
Tommy, Honaker, VA
Jim Leeds- you didn't actually read the article, did you? He was suspended over his links to the United Nations oil-for-food programme in Iraq.
You know- Giving money to the tyrant, who wasn't feeding his people with the reprieve provided by UN to feed his people?
I guess that doesn't fit your world view, so you ignored it.
Michelle, New York, New York
Henry Percy, it was Oona King not Fiona.
Alasdair, London, UK
One month? What a farce. If only treason was once again a punishable offence.
And technically the following quote is illegal under our anti-terrorism laws:
"I am here to glorify the Lebanese resistance, Hezbollah. I am here to glorify the leader, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah." - George Galloway
In fact his use of the word "glorify" is a direct mocking reference to said law.
So even if you ignore any alleged links to the OFF scandal, there's plenty of other reasons this odious individual should be removed from parliament.
Robert, Colchester, UK
Anti-war MP Mr Galloway is to be suspended from the House of Commons for a month at the behest of the Parliamentary Standards Committee, comprised mainly of MPs who voted for an illegal war on the basis of a âdodgy dossierâ.
Being censured by that bunch is a bit like being told to stop slouching by the Hunchback of Notre Dame, wouldnât you say?
Stay strong, Mr Galloway, you are a good man.
June Collins, Enfield , England
Athena...please explain why most of the documents relating to georgeous george's Miriam appeal fund mysteriously dissapeared in Jordan making it impossible for his accounts to be properly audited?
There is absolutely NO evidence of anyone clamping down on dissenting voices in the UK...pity it's not the same in the corrupt and opressive countries that george is so enamoured with.
Viv, London, England
In my view George Galloway is the only patriot in the House of Commons. Other members range from self-serving dupes to war criminals. So-called evidence that he was on Saddam Hussein's payroll has been proved forgeries, as the Daily Telegraph knows to its cost. And precisely who planted this forged evidence still hasn't been investigated. Tony, could we just have a word. "Stop telling lies about me or I'll start telling the truth about you" as Mr. Galloway famously say to a Times correspondent in a debate on Iraq. This threatened suspension is so misguided on several levels. Counterproductive for the Labour party as it offer Mr. Galloway countless opportunities to bad-mouth the government. A skill at which he excels. "The war criminal George W. Bush and his supine lackey Tony Blair ..."
Andrew Milner, Yokohama, Kanagawa
Disgusting treatment of one of the few spokespeople for peace. How about expelling the hundreds of MPs who voted for genocide in Iraq and turned a blind eye to the criminal Tony Blair.
For shame.
Horace Barker, Surrey, UK
The real scandal about Iraq is the US Administrations conspiracy with the US Oil Companies in this war for OIL. Isn't it about time somebody investigated this?
imj, Abu Dhabi, UAE
I'd have to agree with Athena. This is clearly a campaign to silence criticism, something impossible with such unpopular policies, in fact criminal policies, that he exposes for what they are. You see, the real crimes were done by the people trying to silence Galloway and far from covering them up by targeting him, they only bring them more into the open.
Gideon, Tokyo,
Does parliament actually think the British people buy this rubbish? might not agree with Mr Galloway on many issues but everyone knows this is a witch hunt undertaken by amateurs to distract our attention from the most shameful act our country has undertaken in modern times. In time, I believe those who stood up to the masters of war will be held in the highest regard. Shame on you Mr Blair, shame!
Charles, London, UK
Look a little closer at who is leaking this information early and always remember how New Labour dealt with the ever popular Mo Mowlam when she became more popular than the insecure Tony Blair could handle.
Take a deep sniff because something stinks and it eminates from the Downing Street area, nothing has changed, simply the name of the temporary resident.
In his favour, is the fact that George is more than capable of giving New Labour as good as it dishes out but they never admit to doing so. Nothing changes, just the resident of No.10, not the ethics.
KenH, Harrow.,
He's lucky. Usually when you cross the Rothschilds you have an airplane accident, or a heart attack, or suicide, or who knows what else. You don't usually get the chance to go unscathed.

Galloway is a victim of a well funded and highly organised smear campaign from US and UK Zionist sources. I suggest the people who attack Galloway. People whop get thir opinions from reading The Sun and The Mail listen to Galloways impassioned and impressive speeches which are available on MP3 . Just do a Google. The right wing fanatics who launched the insane attack on Iraq are desperate to diver attention from their folly/ The sums involved in thE Mariam appeal are tiny. The hundreds of billions wasted on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are the real issue. It is shocking that Galloway is being victimized for telling the truth while Blair is given huge pay cheques and important roles which he is manifestly unqualified for.
Paul Taylor, Folkestone, Kent
I don't understand why they have chosen this week to suspend him, especailly when on 18th July he is supposed to be starting a debate on First Solution Money Transfer Ltd collapsing and the money transfer industry as a whole in the UK.
First Solution Money Trasfer went into liquidation on 29th June leaving thousands of people out of pocket. The exact figure is yet to be confirmed but reports range from £1.7m to £15m.
Some are even saying that First Solution Money Transfer Ltd and its 4 directors have actually run off with this large sums of money. Most are speculating that this fraud is quite a big concern.
GG would have been very vocal about this? What is the UK Government trying to hide.
Nanu Miah, East London, UK
One of the saddest downsides to all of this is that it is the House of Commons itself - with a majority of 'self-serving, me, me, me of MP's which has become the irrelevance.
Steve, Bournemouth, England
For bringing parliament into disrepute may I suggest that they ban every single member in that case.Looking at Prime Minister's question time reminds me of my days in primary school where the playground was utter chaos at playtime eg a lot of shouting and noise but no assemblance of order.
Thomas Slattery, Paisley, Scotland
I submit that Galloway brought politics into disrepute when after being expelled from the Labour Party he defeated Fiona King in a London seat as the Scottish ex-MP founder-member of Respect - which would have to be a contradiction of just about everything in issue. Obviously this sequence of events had little to do with Galloway himself, and one can therefore presume the same applied to whatever role he played as an agent in dealings with Saddam Hussein. He is clearly designed to get up a lot of peopleâs noses. It is the people pulling his strings that are the real crooks.
Henry Percy, London, UK
Galloway is the unacceptable face of british politics. A months suspension, wow, that must have given him a shock. Watch this space, this guy is guilty as hell.
kenny, hove,
George Galloway is a complete irrelevance in the House of Commons. It is ages since he has taken part in debates, even on foreign affairs. Unless my memory fails me, the last time he made a speech was when he won the ballot for an adjournment debate, when he called Adam Ingram a thug after Ingram chewed him up and spat him out.
Simon Ashley, Glasgow,
If The Mariam Appeal has nothing to hide then why have they never filed any accounts.
k martin, london,
A clear attempt by the war criminals and their associates to discredit one of the most eloquent exposers of their crimes or complicity with crimes.
George has already used facts and his principles to defeat the neo cons in their own congress, the secret services ridden rag the Daily Telegraph at high court and now he will expose these cowards
Glenn Jenkins, Luton, UK
Mr Galloway is to be punished for his active opposition to the genocidal sanctions against Iraq and the subsequent criminal invasion and imperial occupation.
The real Oil-for-Food scandal is the $9 billion of Iraq's money stolen by the US colonial administration. That embezzlement, possibly the largest in history, seldom gets a mention in the media of the aggressor coalition.
Brendan Tuohy, Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa
who voted this comedian in?
david, nice, france
How about kicking out all the politicans who supported the illegally war in iraq that has created 4 million+ refugees, tens of thousands of iraq lives etc. This is a bigger issue.
Jim, Leeds, Uk
Everytime they target Galloway in the media or in Parliament they just make it clear that they are tryng to clamp down on dissenting voices - everything said about GG has been proved to be lies and is farcical when you compare to the mammoth crimes against humanity being committed by the very people responsible for punishing George. This time however I smell real desperation and I suspect it's because the troops are about to be withdrawn from Iraq any day now - something George has been demanding for the last 4 years. He is totally vindicated and they can't handle it.
Athena Murphy, Hampstead, UK
