David Cameron said last night that the level of immigration to Britain was too high and placed unacceptable pressure on public services and housing.
The Conservative leader had previously been reluctant to speak on immigration, a subject that he believes Michael Howard mishandled during the last election.
Speaking on the BBC Two Newsnight programme, however, he said that he thought that the level of immigration “has been too high”.
He added: “I do think that people have a very real concern about levels of immigration and not because of different cultures or the colour of their skin. I think that people’s concern is about services. It’s the pressure on schools, pressure on hospitals, pressure on housing.
“It is important to understand that if your child is going into a reception class and suddenly 20 new kids turn up because lots more families have arrived then that is a big pressure.”
Mr Cameron’s need to win back traditional Conservative support is underlined by the results of a poll carried out by the Conservative Home website and given to The Times.
The survey of 1,274 Conservatives suggests that just 58 per cent are satisfied with his leadership and 41 per cent dissatisfied. Just 56 per cent believe that the party is on the right track.
In recent weeks the Conservative leader has shown an increased willingness to appeal to the party’s traditional voters. For example, he has made three interventions in eight days on crime.
The issue tops a list of subjects that Conservative supporters believe will be most important at the next election, according the poll. More than a quarter (27 per cent) chose crime, followed by social breakdown (26 per cent), immigration (11 per cent) and the NHS (10 per cent). Tax and Europe account for just 7 per cent and 3 per cent respectively.
The survey shows strong support for a Tory pledge to abolish inheritance tax first mooted last month by John Redwood. The tax is currently paid by just 6 per cent of voters but topped a list of levies that Tories would like to see cut. The poll suggested that 27 per cent wanted it reduced, significantly ahead of those who wanted a reduction in income tax (20 per cent) or council tax (18 per cent). By contrast just 16 per cent agreed that green taxes were vital to tackle climate change.
Tim Montgomerie, the website’s editor, said that the leader’s latest campaign was in tune with activists’ concerns. “The current focus on crime has connected Cameron with the Conservative Party’s core vote for arguably the first time in his leadership.”
In his interview Mr Cameron said that the Tories were ready to fight a general election if Gordon Brown called an early poll this autumn. He said that the party had “fire in its belly” and was looking forward to the contest.
He insisted that he would continue to occupy the political centre ground and rejected suggestions that his new harder line on law and order represented a shift to the Right.

Theres only one party has the guts to deal with immigration and that is the BNP, all the others have welcomed it and all the other `talk` tough and do nothing.
Labour are the loony left we always suspected and Cameron is a pathetic toff out of touch with the real world, he belongs in the liberals!
the BNP have always been anti EU, tough on crime, and anti mass immigration!
vote BNP and save your country, while you still can!

Same the world over immigrants just following the money ,we didn't have this problem when our parent's were unable to pay utility bills in the 50's and 60's.Now this country has some wealth it's the fly's round a jam pot syndrome. This country must have a great name for being a soft touch.

Hmm. Desmond - how do think the Native Americans felt when you sent them off on the trail of tears? Or the Spanish when you annexed Texas? Who's the "illegal" in the USA?
Jimster, Edinburgh,
The most significant part of this report seems to me to be the paragraph on taxes. Tories would most like to see a cut in inheritance tax, though it's paid by only 6 per cent, yet there was only 16 per cent support for taxes to help preserve the world for our grandchildren. Sounds like some Tories are happy to be seen as the "me first" party. David Cameron should stick firmly to his guns on "green taxes", but ensure they're used to encourage "green" practices.

The real issue about immigration is this government's total and enduring inability to distinguish between the genuine and much needed skilled person and the downright undesirable and criminal elements. Allied to this is the extraordinary interpretation of Human Rights by our judiciary and the utter failure of all political parties to grasp the nettle in any significant way.
Martin Pilcher, Herts,
How comes DC never mentioned that this new migrants pay their taxes and bring in much needed funds into Governments coffers. It's look like another Conservative leader is shifting towards the right.
Edwin Jacob, Middlesex, UK
Forget any changes that Dave the wimp proposes, it is only election talk, and to those who are easily led by false promises. The truth is that anything that has been proposed by the Tories cannot or will not be implemented because of one major stumbling block, the EU! Until Britain withdraws from this insidious organisation do not look for any changes from whoever is in government. It is not racist to want to limit the number of immigrants that enter the country, it is plain common sense, nor is it a problem for the small minority who apply and go through the correct process to migrate to Britain, it is the unchecked masses from the EU and those that use the easy route in. The figures quoted for immigrants is only at best a near guess, as the authorities have no idea just how many there are. Leave the EU, close the borders, scrap the welfare system and start all over again, that way you will clear up two messes at the same time!

cameron talks of managing the country, there are 600 milion european citeziens able to work live in england.Oh yes david by the timeyou get in power scotland and wales will be under owner management. The conservative a party of many faces, cheap labour is a wish of the party.the idea that new conservatism loves the family is laughable, the right to buy a home from the council was a great idea, but the flaw is not replacing the available housing stock. To build homes for families not for profit is still a good idea, buts its so 1950 era. Cheap labour, high housing cost, with little or no tax on property developers little will change unless the goverment deals with the problem. My idea is to tax profits on the sale of housing and let local councils build houses giving low wage earners the chance to buy a home.To preach imagration controls is to upset 60% of the voting population now thats what i call management.

Erik from Fairfax - yawn, this has nothing to do with Enoch. Enoch came down hard on immigrants but had nothing to say about the thick, indolent natives who caused employers to look overseas in the first place.
However, there IS a legitimate debate to be had about the type of immigrants being let in - there is no point replacing illiterate natives with illiterate foreigners. I would have given DC more credit if he'd outlined specific immigration policies that emulate those in Australia and Singapore - welcome with open arms educated high-achievers from around the world but completely ban the chain migration of peasants from places with medieval belief systems like Anatolia, Pakistan and Somalia.
Unfortunately, in both the UK and US it is politically incorrect to advocate discrimination on the basis of class or education or to advocate the deportation of queue-jumpers.
AA, New York,
Spain has a first rate national health service and in recent years many people from eastern european counties have come to the country to find work. The Spanish construction industry would be hard pressed if it didn´t have their services. The Conservative Party is anti-european but forgets that 60 % of British exports now go to the European Union. Try replacing those when you leave the E.U. Mr. Cameron. Aren´t there any Brits working in Poland, Rumania, Bulgaria and the Baltic States? Lets hear about them sometimes not always the stay-at-home bigots. Why don´t you come and see Madrid´s new metro, light years better than London´s.
Charles Morgan , Madrid , Spain.
Mr Cameron is absolutely correct to identify immigration (legal and otherwise) at today's uncontrolled rates are unsustainable and represent a major conern to the majority of the electorate. It is not racist or right-wing or extremist to point this truth out. Even if all of the incoming people were white, middle-class British people returning to their country, the numbers involved would still threaten to over-stretch public services.
EdwinThornber, Bucharest,
So if elected, the Tories, under Cameron will 'get tough' on immigration. Yeah, yeah, yeah...heard it all before... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Interesting that he was reminded in the course of the Newsnight interview about Margaret Thatcher's famous 'swamping' speech, which helped her into power in 1979. So did she 'get tough' once elected? Er.....no..actually, because if she had done what was necessary THEN it would not be the burning issue it is NOW nearly thirty years on! I hope gullible middle-Englanders wake up to the reality that the Tory party is a complete sell-out. Vote BNP.
David Moon, Seaford, East Sussex
Its about time, there are genuine concerns over the level of immigration and how much it is costing, not just in services, but also the money in the pocket of Mr & Mrs Joe Average!
The levels of immigration are only tolerated by the establishment because it drives down wages to the benifit of of the top bosses and shareholders, but does little for the ordinary person on the street.
How much could be saved by the national health service if stricter controls were implemented covering the health of immigrants.
Also, would there be even the debate on building on green belt if immigration was tightly controlled.
And finally, the birth rates of immigrants are far higher than the indiginous population, therefore eroding even more coffers in the national health, and the Britishness of this once great country.
Pete Fone, St Albans, UK
Lets face it Cameron is soft on immigration and this is just a desparate attempt to claw back a few more votes. He has repeatedly made his position clear on this topic, he is giving no commitments and I think we can be fairly certain that once he has our votes he will quickly and quietly drop the subject. I suggest that if we really want this issue addressed then we should vote for those who really will tackle it, or withhold our voting decision to the last minute as parties out bid each other for our votes in a desparate auction for power.
John W, Oldham,
Is n't this topic the 'elephant in the room' ? Have nt we all been incessantly browbeaten into remaining tight-lipped about this problem ? Cramming ever larger numbers of people into an overcrowded island is not 'something to celebrate'.
Each nation has a finite amount of resources to support a certain number of its citizens fairly and equitably.
The cries of 'racist' have problem already gone up from the government's PC brigade. However, this is not at all about ethnicity it is a simple matter of allocating scarce resources
( housing, schools, hospitals, public finances etc. ) across an ever-increasing populace
Rick, Greater London, England
An election is looming and suddenly Cameron wants to give the impression that he is a Tory! Hilarious! The Tories must get rid of him. or be wiped out in the next election.
peter, London,
Yet another U TURN by Cameron recycling again the Old Tory Right Wing Policies. But still no constructive answers to the problem. Still no substance only spin just telling everybody everything they want to hear on the day. Cameron shows no leadership qualities as he never sticks to one line in policy, Example Hug Hoodies last year now Zero Tolerance this year.
Bill Rees, Truro, Cornwall
Cameron's right too. Perhaps it needed to be said. This Government hasn't got a clue. Talk about the blind leading the blind.
Judy , Liverpool, england
I agree with Eric, and for that reason people have no right to moan or complain since they have invited this on themselves despite warnings. Isn't it the same with the prisons being full. If you invite 2m people into the country in a short space of time a subset of them are bound to be crims, but no planning was made for that either.
Trevor, Tunbridge Wells, Kent
I hope the spanish take the same attitude as Cameron , with all the brits flocking to their country for a new life.
Uche George, London, England
Just an exercise in stealing the thunder from those who've been saying this for years. It's the same old claptrap as when it comes to doing anything really effective and putting their money where their mouth is, you won't see them for dust. I don't trust anyone in mainstream politics these days. They'll all rather pathetic.
stevgillamos, Romford,
I see we are back to big bad immigrant week... I am willing to bet David Cameron does not even know what criteria immigrants have to fulfill BEFORE they are given a visa... I am also willing to be that the majority of people do not realise that by the time you eventually gain British citizenship, you will have spent approximately £2000 in Visa fees. I know that the British public has no knowledge of the fact that immigrants have 'No recourse to public funds'... yes that means no safety net, despite our NIC contributions and despite paying our taxes. Believe it or not, the words 'Nor Recourse to Public Funds' actually appears in ones Visa.
Chantel, UK,
Enoch Powell was right. Too bad people didn't appreciate his wisdom, insight and candor. But, people never do. Now it may be too late.
