Peter Hain was forced to apologise last night after admitting that the number of foreign citizens working in Britain had increased by 300,000 more than he told MPs earlier this month.
Mr Hain, the Work and Pensions Secretary, also admitted that a claim that Britons had taken 2 million of the extra 2.7 million jobs created since Labour came to power could not be proved by official statistics.
In a letter to the Speaker and other MPs, Mr Hain said that the errors had been made in good faith. The upward revisions are certain to further fuel the debate about the Government’s ability, and willingness, to assess levels of migration accurately.
Mr Hain told MPs on October 8 that 800,000 extra foreign nationals were working in Britain in comparison with ten years ago. “Following further careful analysis of the Labour Force Survey, this figure has been revised upwards by 0.3 million. This revised analysis shows that there are an extra 1.1 million foreign nationals in employment in the UK since 1997,” Mr Hain states in his letter of apology.
He continues that his claims on the number of new jobs being taken by British citizens is also not technically accurate.
A spokesman for the Department for Work and Pensions said that the revision had been made partly because of “a more rigourous definition of foreign national workers to include, among other things, those who were in the country before 1997 who have subsequently taken up jobs”.
The spokesman also claimed that about half the new jobs had been taken by EU nationals. The Home Office will confirm tomorrow that restrictions on low-skilled workers from Bulgaria and Romania will stay in place.
Ministers admitted recently that the Government was revising estimates for the net number of migrants to Britain from 145,000 a year to 190,000. It emerged that the 25-year projections included estimates of up to 240,000 in the initial years, close to record levels.
Chris Grayling, the Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, described the statistical revisions as farcical.
“It is difficult to see how we are supposed to have confidence in Labour’s policies if they cannot have confidence in their own figures,” he said.

I suspect the immigration/asylum fiasco may be a deliberate NuLabor way of inflation control, at the expense of not-so-longer-term problems and costs. Like PFI and too-easy credit, the government (and especially G. Brown as chancellor) has forced us all to take a huge "mortgage" on the future to pay for facilities and services today - a great pity the mortgage advance has been frittered away so carelessly. Brown's UK is like a someone with a two houses (badly built) on 125% mortgages, a gas-guzzling (but unreliable and dangerous) 4X4 and expensive huge-screen TV (that is a fire-risk), all paid for by second and third mortages which are cripplingly expensive already, never mind in the future.

Labour should call themselves "Cheap Labour", bed friends of the capitalists if ever there were any.

The errors were made in good faith ?
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !!!!!!!
Dave, Lincoln,
I suspect more Labour fraud. Are all those who were quickly given a passport after just five years in the country included in this 1.1 million? I strongly suspect not: they are probably counted as nationals. A million people were also given passports in Labour's ten year period.

for a man who used to champion Mugabe and his regime in Zimbabwe presumably Hain is used to admitting his mistakes. Please could Hain go back to South Africa - and swiftly, he may actually be wanted there.
HG, swindon, Wilts
Shouldn't Hain be allowed to return to the only job he appears to have been moderately successful at , i.e. digging up sports pitches.
B. J. Carroll, Hong Kong, China
Peter Hain should have asked migration watch, they could tell him as they've been counting, we should put migration watch in power as they are on the ball, unlike the unelected government,
The government figures are wrong anyway, they're about 3 million out. Smiling Hain shoud get his act together.
preddo53, leeds, UK
as a former champion of Mugabe, and his regime in Zimbabwe, presumably Hain is used to making mistakes. Hain should return to his native South Africa - swiftly, he may actually be wanted there.
HG, swindon, Wilts
So is Mr Hain going to resign or indeed get the sack for being incompetent? I suppose this is the same limp wristed apology we have had for the Iraq war! When are they ever going to take responsibility for their departments and when do we hold to account these 'Untouchables'.
Craig Musgrove, Llandudno, Wales
How long have these cretins known of this information?
Did they know before Brown lost his nerve on a election?
How many more figures are missing or inaccurate?
There is no doubt that this government is inept, without trust, honesty or honor.
The 'enriching' of Britain has to stop but the Philbyites are not the people to do it.
Nigel Graham-Miller, Valencia, Spain
Figures given in good faith?
Dear Mr Hain - you may rest assured that you can say what you like "..in good faith.." - I still would not believe it. New Labour = Serial Liars
Alastair Cannon, Bracknell, England
This is all fiddlesticks-Bulgarian and Romanian people entering the UK do not even need to show a passport-an ID card will suffice-therefore no swiping of card and therefore no recvord of their visit. And whose idea was this? The barmy Border and Immigration Agency-aka Work Permits UK-AKA the Home Office!
Peter, Belfast
PETER MAC HUGH, Belfast,
The 'error' seems well within normal tolerances, given that these are the same clowns responsible for predicting 'only' 15, 000 migrant workers were expected from the new member states of the EU. That around 600,000 arrived is apparently not a problem. This morning, on Radio 4, Keith Vaz appeared disappointed that restrictions were to be applied to Rumanian and Bulgarian workers who wish to come here. Understandable, given that perhaps only a handful intended coming to the UK.
m collins, Leeds, England
Alright, so you were wrong in your estimates. But what are you doing about it? Everyone involved insists that there ' are lessons to be learned' - the classic response to try and get off the hook! Almost a third of our residents are trying to get out of this country and so, in a few years time, you'll be working directly for illegal immigrants. The problem is that you'll have no tax revenues to support your grasping life style.
trevorjd, Torbay, UK
They said 13000 would come in, but this turned out to be 600,000.
If they say 300,000 that means...so many I need my calculator!
Helena, Zaragoza,
A director in industry who mislead their shareholders, would be expected to resign. Surely an MP who's equivalent stakeholders are the voters should resign. The rules and principles should be the same.
andrew, blackburn, uk
Could someone ask the Minister how many migrant workers are 'self-employed' (and don't show up on the DWP statistics) and can he say for each 'migrant worker' how many 'dependants' each brings in?
CMayer, London, UK
Sums up this goverment: don't know and don't care.
John, Shefford, UK
Labour are well known for their lies so 300,000 is the tip of a lying iceberg. This is the 'revised lie' for employed people what I would like to see is the figure for foreign natinals living here and claiming benefits.
David Thijm, Storubridge, UK
so hain got it wrong, what a surprise!
Phil Barnes, preston, england
Whats 300,000 amongst friends.
