The decision reached by Nigel Hastilow to resign has spared David Cameron from having to make a deeply unappetising choice.
If he had sacked him, there would have been a backlash from some elements of the Tory grassroots. If, on the other hand, Mr Cameron had overlooked the matter at least one modernising Tory MP was ready to condemn him.
Some activists will still regard Mr Hastilow as a martyr - he claims to have received hundreds of messages of support - but his resignation has taken most of the sting out of the furore.
He quit, he writes in a local newspaper today, because he could not bring himself to sign off quotes written for him by the party’s chief spin doctor, Andy Coulson.
He was supposed to say: “Although I did not and do not support Enoch Powell’s ’Rivers of Blood’ comments, I accept that some of the wording of my column was incredibly stupid.”
One can imagine Mr Hastilow - a former newspaper editor - might object to having to read such a humiliating script but it is difficult to disagree with its thrust.
Mr Cameron was praised on Friday by Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, for the care he had shown in tackling immigration in a speech last week.
The Tory leader had, said Mr Phillips, succeeded for the first time in his adult life in leading a debate on the issue without reference to race.
And then comes Mr Hastilow. Defending himself, he points out that he had said that Mr Powell was right that immigration would dramatically change the nature of Britain. The claim is hardly controversial - the invocation of the speaker and the speech could hardly be more so.
Mr Cameron, an architect of the 2005 election campaign which majored on immigration, saw how the issue can drown out all other messages.
Determined not to repeat what he regarded as one of Michael Howard’s main mistakes, he hardly touched the issue for the first 18 months of his leadership.
It was his public announcement that immigration is “too high” and needs to be “substantially” cut that helped re-connect him with the grassroots after the rift over grammar schools.
But the Tory leader has been disciplined in never going beyond that formulation and has been responsible in his language.
All three main political parties are struggling to address voters’ concerns over the issue of immigration without losing destructive forces.
The brief, inglorious career of Mr Hastilow is a reminder of where the line lies through this minefield.

Following the agenda set by the Nulabour party in matters of political correctness has made the Conservative Party unelectable now and forever.
Who is going to vote for a party so afraid to be different they are merely a junior version of the party in power.
It would appear that the public have no choice to change things but vote BNP or UKIP and may God help us then.
Howard, Basildon, England
The racism stick is all Nu Lab have left with which to beat the Tories, in all other ares they are totally innefective, know it full well, and are desperate for any sort of advantage. I dont suppose Cameron wanted to see Mr Hastilow go, but knew if he didnt, he and us, would have had to endure weeks if not months of the Cuprinol kid, and one or more of the shrieking NL harridens, Blears, Kelly etc, popping up on our screens, with the full blessing and cooperation of the Blair/Brown cooperation, to castigate the " nasty racist Tories " Camerons actions were swift, descisive, and above all neccessary.

We moan because poiticians done tell the truth but when one does tell the truth on a subject that affects us all very very greatly he is canned and then forced to resign.they cant win can they?that must make us all racist then who actuially know the truth on the effect of the unknown amount of immigrants flowing uncontrollably into the uk
peter, luton, england
Yes, it may show discipline but equally it shows a lack of courage, a lack of tolerance and mostly a willingness for the Tories to be persuaded by politcal correctness.
Opposition are supposed to offer alternatives. This government clearly does not have an immigration policy worthy of the term. Let the people hear where their interests may be franchised. At present we are all at the mercy of closed shop of political elite with no life experience of living amongst their electorate.
We are beholden to a very few with the remaining courage and honour to speak their true beliefs; there is no freedom of speech in the UK left to speak of.
Edwin Thornber, Bucharest,
No, Cameron's swift move shows he is a leftie and that he like Blair indicate he will move in one direction and then does as he pleases afterward when he has got your vote.
peter, London,
Hold on amoment, David Cameron has said absolutely nothing about hastilow, so how can you say that he has been decisive. He has hidden away, which is also an accusation levelled at Gordon Brown.
paul goddard, andover, UK
perhaps the tories have finally found their true level of intelligence and will merge with the bnp so we can see their true colours
