DEFENCE officials entrusted with ensuring troops are properly equipped in Iraq and Afghanistan have spent £7,000 to go on a team-building event, featuring hot tubs, ducking stools and celebratory glasses of champagne.
Figures released by the Ministry of Defence show that the Defence Equipment and Support division has allocated £330,000 for civil servants to go on courses for team-building, training and personal coaching. It is part of a total £20m allocated for outside consultancies in 2007/8.
Last month a group of MoD officials working on the Type 45 destroyer took part in a “splash and dash” day in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, with Friday Island, a team-building company.
It involves events such as archery and canoeing, and the winning team is entitled to use the hot tub while sipping champagne. The MoD allocated £7,000 for the awayday.

For your information Michael, if they cleared out the top management at the MoD (Whitehall) a very large number of serving and retired decision making armed officers would have to find another bolt hole.
It should be known, in order for sayers to make a fair judgement.

If the country wants monkeys as civil servants then treat them like monkeys. If the country wants wants its civil servants to be of high calibre and perform in their teams with great effectiveness then why not let them have their team building events as the private sector does? Remember, the public sector is in competition with the private sector for good quality staff.
Graham Richards, Bristol,
While I agree that you will find corruption in most places, I find I have to read everything with a pinch of salt these days.
£7000 may sound a hefty sum however the numbers of people attending this away day is not detailed and I suspect it was a team which is more than 100 strong which brings the cost to circa £70 per head.
Before you attack the institutions that provide your ability to publish your free speech, look at what your office may afford you in way of Christmas meals and team building. I can bet it is a sum far more than is awarded to each civil servant. Who despite 1970's sterotypes do not drink tea all day and act like TV characters would depict.
V. Annoyed, Bristol,
Clearly the top management of these departments have little integrity and no consciences to allow this kind of spending whilst our armed forces have to make do and mend. I do wonder how they explain authorising these extravagancies to their political masters? Of course they donât because they are also milking the system, and donât have a problem wasting our money anyway.
Michael, Sheffield,
Is it not strange that corruption in Britain is cloaked in the language of legitimate expenditure. Public service and politics in general is now as corrupt as anywhere else including India and Italy.
Nobody in government is going to do anything about it as they are all enjoying the benefits of living off the taxpayer.

The MoD officials comprise civilians and servicemen of all ranks from the basic grade to the very highest.
Whiteall is awash with servicemen , many of which hold major leading posts who have responsibility to ensure the front line is properly supported.
It is misleading the public to imply that any problems are the cause of civilian staff -many of which are ex servicemen.
Pretending it is wholly civilians that are at fault is deceitful and does nothing to remedy problems.
If the cap fits, etc!

They could have a cheaper, and more educational, team building day by spending it at an Army training centre. They could then have hot showers and can of beer. Cheaper and much more appropriate.
P. Cardwell, Saintes, France
Whenever this government announces and reannounces huge sums of spending on any public service you now know instinctively that only a fraction of this money will be delivered at the sharp end. Vast sums seem to be expended on personnel, administration, management and budgetary costs(as well as away days for the boys and personal expences).
Some of this money never seems to achieve it's objectives - look at the nhs computerisation, dentist contracts, child support agency, family tax credits etc etc. No one seems to be willing to actualy take responsibility, be it the loss of data discs bank and pension regulation or the simple maintainence of sea defences. We are doomed as a nation to being labeled internationaly as second class if this continues. In the decades ahead Britain's fate could be aligned with the fall of the Roman empire. It is time for a strong leader to sack some of these incompetants (without compensation or peerage).
Diddly Do, Liverpool,
I'm from a military family for the last 140 years at least but what's the point in fighting for your country when traitor politicians hand it over to the foreigner for free. Isn't Britain projected to be Islamic by 2050 anyway, so whats the point in fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. A person who defends this insane society is a fool.
