Beata Bryl, 23, came to London, as thousands of young Eastern Europeans do, with dreams of a well-paid job and a better life. But her dreams ended in the summer of last year when she was beaten to death and her body dumped by the side of a country road in Buckinghamshire. Her body was doused in accelerant and set alight.
When she first arrived in England everything was good. She worked in the catering business, had found friends and went on holiday to France. But after about a year the letters telling how much fun she was having apparently changed. Miss Bryl now complained that she was being beaten and molested.
Her mother, living in a flat in the impoverished Polish mining town of Gliwice, said: “I suspect an older man may have been using her for sex with other men. She would run away, but he would always find her. She would ring me up, sounding terrified, saying she was being threatened.”
In June last year Mrs Bryl spoke to her daughter for the last time. Two days later a motorist stopped by the side of the road outside Wooburn Green and saw something smouldering in the woods.
Despite an appeal on Crimewatch this year and the offer of a £10,000 reward by Thames Valley Police for information leading to the offender’s conviction no one has been charged with Miss Bryl’s murder.
In June last year Cambridgeshire police began investigating a murder that is believed to be connected to a feud within the Lithuanian community. Dainus Kigas, 35, a father of three, was burnt to death when someone threw a petrol bomb into his van while he slept in it by a roadside in Wisbech. He was sleeping in it to prevent it from being stolen from outside his wife’s parents’ home.
A huge police operation, including the distribution of fliers in seven languages and visits to his home town, Vilnius, has not led to anyone being charged. It is believed that he was heavily involved in cigarette smuggling.
