The leader of the Scottish Labour Party today survived a key meeting with party members as she broke her four day silence over her role in the illegal funding scandal that has blown up around her leadership campaign.
Speaking to party members in Edinburgh for the first time about the controversy, Wendy Alexander told the Scottish Parliamentary Labour Party that she did not intend to flout the rules when accepting a donation from Paul Green, the Channel Islands businessman, and had no intention of resigning.
Earlier today, Mr Green accused her team of "gross mismanagement" over the acceptance of his donation, which broke UK funding rules because it was sent from Jersey.
He claimed he had been assured that the £950 donation was above board by Charlie Gordon, an MSP who was part of Ms Alexander's campaign team, and added that he now wished he had not given the money at all.
Giving her first statement on the affair, Ms Alexander insisted that she had repeatedly tried to ensure that the funding given to her leadership campaign had been above board.
"For the record, there is repeated correspondence initiated by me personally, dealing with the issue of permissibility, and demonstrating my interest in ensuring that donations received were indeed permissible," she claimed.
Indicating that she would not be standing down, Ms Alexander added: "I have always believed politicians should have the highest standards of integrity.
"It would be easy to quit but also wrong. To give up this job in these circumstances would be also giving up my reputation for integrity and honesty and I’m not prepared to do that."
She declared: "I have never sought to mislead. I am not dishonest in any way. My campaign did not set out to mislead anybody or break the rules."
Supporters of Ms Alexander were this afternoon said to be quietly relieved that the subsequent meeting, which lasted an hour and a half, passed without any indication of a major rebellion, with no speeches from backbenchers criticising her or calling for her to quit.
"I am delighted to say that she has got clear and overwhelming support within the group. There was no dissent at all," Duncan McNeil, chairman of the Labour MSPs, said.
However, speculation intensified around Holyrood today about whether Mr Gordon, who has already quit as Shadow Transport Minister, now plans to quit as an MSP over the saga. He was named personally by Mr Green today as the figure who assured him that his donation was above board.

So many chickens coming home to roost at the same time! The arrogance of power of those in power for too long. If the police or Standards Commission do deal with as illegal acts then, as a Councillor, I will never have any confidence in it again.

They may well prefer Mr gordon to go, but Bendy Wendy Has broken the law and in law will have to go as well. The act is quite clear Wendy is the responsible person and anyone convicted under the act cannot contiue as an MSP.

There is a direct correlation between the soulless and subtly devious politicians who have taken the stage over the last 15 years and the deterioration of the political, social and economic institutions over which they have influence.
Politics is a business for the politicians, run by the politicians, manipulated by the politicians to fill their pockets, increase their pensions, do deals and increase their inflated egos so that they can go onto some consulting job financed by some government that they did favours for at the expense of their own constituents and country.
Politicians, many of whom are lawyer are now legalized thieves. Arrogant and without an iota of integrity. Politics is a business for those who know they can spin any yarn and walk away with a pot of gold even when caught and convicted.
Politics has now become a game, a super con, another endless soap opera
JC, Lisbon,
Of course Wndy's team were "guilty of gross mismanagement" in accepting funds from Jersey - after all she couldn't be expected to known that a donor - to whom she wrote a letter addressed to Jersey - lived there could she? Anyway, if she resigned it might embarass Harriet, and that woiuld never do!
If this (mis) administration continue to blame their indians for every single thing their chiefs do wrong - what a wonderful example of honesty they do set! - they will hopefully run out of indians!

I propose a campaign to invite Wendy "I don't leave my job" Alexander to resign.
Let's send her e-mails and letter asking to resign.
riccardo, brussels,
Wendy Alexander is happy to survive!
miserable people!!!!
riccardo, brussels,
If Ms Alexander has repeated correspondence initiated by her personally, dealing with the issue of permissibility, and demonstrating her interest in ensuring that donations received were indeed permissible then given the clear terms of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 it is simply not credible that Mr Green's donation was honestly accepted.
If such correspondence exists then clearly she was alive to the issue which begs the question, why did she choose to ignore the law in respect of this donation and write a personl letter of thanks to Mr Green?
If she never sought to mislead where did the story that the donation was channelled through a UK business come from and why did she not write to that business?
It does seem that in London the political future of Harriet Harmen is considered more important that the future of the entire Scottish Labour Party who are being severly damaged by Ms Alexander's refusal to go.
