The property developer at the centre of Labour’s “donorgate” crisis said last night that he had given money secretly to avoid accusations of being part of a Jewish conspiracy. David Abrahams also warned the Government he will come out fighting if ministers start “hammering” him over the row.
In an interview with the Jewish Chronicle, Mr Abrahams said all his money had been “earned legitimately”, and none of it had come from Israel, as had been alleged. Mr Abrahams said he was now being linked with Lord Levy, Tony Blair’s chief fundraiser who was investigated in the “cash for honours” inquiry, and Jon Mendelsohn, Labour’s new chief fundraiser. “Some of the things written about me have been terrible. Now they are saying there was a Jewish conspiracy, with Lord Levy, Jon Mendelsohn and me, and that is ridiculous.” h “The real reason I wanted to remain anonymous was that I didn’t want Jewish money and the Labour Party being put together because this is what I feared would happen. People would say there’s a Jewish conspiracy.”
Mr Abrahams accused Mr Mendelsohn of trying to alienate him from the Labour Friends of Israel. He said that he “had helped to build up” the organisation, but Mr Mendelsohn “thought he might have opposition” when he became its chairman.
“He slagged me off over it and that’s why I released the letter,” Mr Abrahams added, referring to correspondence sent last month.

"Mohammed I hardly think Israel needs wait for a 'Green Light' from Britain in forming foreign policy & in protecting citizens in the North from constant rocket attacks by a rampant Hezbollah -armed by Iran - running amok over Lebanon.
Jean, London, UK"
err how did KILLING 1000 civilians help???
Mahmood Khan, London, UK
Labour deserve what they are now getting for taking money of such a self centred character clearly in love with himself.
Anser, Tehran,

"Non-transparent pressure groups for foreign governments should have no place in the House of Commons."
Colin Dale, London, UK
This is absolutely the problem; when money, state sponsored trips and entertainment are used to induce a Government into policies which the electorate would never support.
The plain and unpalatable truth was Blair supporting the murder of hundreds of Lebanese and his Party being the recipient of large donations and loans through his agency in support of a pro-Israel policy apart from any aspects of honours. Of course books such as The 'Way We Live Now come to mind.
DM, Eastbourne,
Maybe the generosity may be much simpler than some think and nothing to do with being Jewish. As it happens our generous to Labour, property developer is about to make a fortune from the development of a new business park in Labour controlled County Durham. At first planning permission for this little goldmine was declined, but later, mysteriously enough, it was granted..... Surprise, surprise.... I wonder.... Jewish conspiracy my eye. We've seen this kind of thing before with Labour up in this region, and the leopard hasn't changed its spots.
Bad minded Joe, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Now it makes sense why Mr Blair had given Israel the green light to kill over 1000 Lebanese without calling for immediate cease fire.
Mohammed, London, UK
Neil why would the state of Israel support the Labour party? We are talking about Gordon Brown who just had Saudis King here. Grow up and think intellegently. This man probably expected some honour or a chance to run a quango in the future. Looking for some jingoistic or xenophobic reason is just pointless.
Stephen G, Ruislip, UK
It would be naive in the extreme to believe that having donated money to the Labour party he isn't going to gently push the Labour government to favour Israeli interests when the time comes.
J Roberts, Manchester, UK
Don't know what a "Jewish Conspiracy" is, a conspiracy to what? However, the secrecy surrounding the whole affair, and the donor's links to the Israeli Embassy makes one suspicious that the money came from the Israeli Government.
Neil, Gloucestershire, England
I cannot belive in this day and age we are still using Jews as scape goats. What when yhou analyse matters can Jews have to do with the running of The Arabian countries (Arguably the wealthiest with more clout) The Japanese one of the strongest economies and most of England for that matter. The size of the home in my predominantly middle class neighbourhood and the high level cars on the drive are not owned by Jews but normal affluent inter-demoninational individuals who are predominantly Christian. The talk of conspiricy is in my view the talk of these who want more and need a scapegoat to blaime for their misfortune and the so called upper class who are dimwitted enough to belive the likes of Mosley. For my money I would make Abrahams right. Turning to Colins view of Jews and Israel - It may be the case Jews feel a connection but I would take a bet plenty of Arabian money reaches the Labour coffers too! Also I don't see us whining when we get 'Another' defence contract from Arabia.
Stephen G, Ruislip, UK
Some might say David Abrahams isn't helping matters by appearing to be rather disingenuous. I'm not sure what a Jewish conspiracy would be when it's at home, but an Israeli lobby, sure. Only it seems the only person raising the subject, albeit that he chooses to call it something else, is him.
philip, cambridge,
There is no Jewish conspiracy - arguably a majority of British Jews don't even belong to the Labour party. But there may well be an Israeli conspiracy. Many of the characters in this scenario have strong Israeli connections and most were or are members of the 'Labour Friends of Israel' lobby - and that includes Lord Levy. If anything has to be investigated it is the extraordinary influence of this Israel lobby on government and the damage that probably does to our democratic parliamentary process. Non-transparent pressure groups for foreign governments should have no place in the House of Commons..
Colin Dale, London, UK
