TONY BLAIR today fuelled further speculation that he will run for election as the European Union’s first full-time president later this year.
Speaking in Paris this morning, the former prime minister called for a “strong and united Europe”, adding that members fail to deliver what their citizens want when they act as individual nations.
Blair said: “Europe is not a question of left or right, but a question of the future or the past, or strength or weakness.”
“Terrorism, security, immigration, organised crime, energy, the environment, science, biotechnology and higher education… In all of these areas, and others, we are much stronger and able to deliver what our citizens expect from us as individual nations if we are part of a strong and united Europe.”
The speech, delivered in French to members of the ruling centre-right UMP party, will be seen widely as Blair’s calling card for the new post of President of the European Council.
The post is to be created in the second half of 2008, with the appointment process to be overseen by France, during its leadership of the EU later this year.
French president Nicholas Sarkozy, who invited Blair to give the address, described the former British prime minister as “one of Europe’s greats”.
Sarkozy last year said Blair was one of two obvious candidates for EU presidency. Jean-Claude Juncker, the Luxembourg prime minister, was the other name proffered by the French premier.
“When we appoint this president of the European Union, I want us to set the bar high and not aim for the lowest common denominator,” Sarkozy said, who also called for a common energy and defence policies across Europe.
“I am a friend of the United States but I insist that Europe give itself autonomous means to defend itself because if one is not capable of this, one is not capable of assuming one’s independence.”
If Blair does become the EU’s president, he may have to step down as a Middle East peace envoy.
The former prime minister now divides his time between the Middle East role, charity work and delivering highly-lucrative speeches. He has also signed a £5million contract for his memoirs.
It was announced last week that he has been appointed as an advisor to the US investment bank J P Morgan, for an annual fee of around £500,000.
During his speech, Blair praised Sarkozy leadership and joked that could easily fit in with his style of government.
In a comment that drew laughter from the audience, Blair spoke of Sarkozy’s “energy in all areas” – an allusion to the French leader’s relationship with a Carla Bruni, a former model and singer.

I dont know about you guys, and I know it sounds RIDICULOUS, but this really sounds like the New World Order. Im SERIOUS...
First there's gonna be the EU, then the NAU....i mean, does anyone find it weird that a British Prime Minister, who's about to be the EU Pres., is involved w/ JP MORGAN??

How much is the CIA/State Department financing Blair's campaign? Given how much of a tool he was of their lies, disinformation, propaganda and war-for-resources aggression over the years, one assumes that this isn't Blair's own idea. The British public wouldn't back B-liar for street sweeper, so he must be serving some other undisclosed constituency.

As a Catholic, I resent the anti-Catholic views expressed by some contributors. One cannot become Pope merely by being a Catholic, one has to be a cardinal, etc, etc., so even suggesting that is heresy and abusive.
I think he'd make a very good EU President., & perhaps bring us even closer to total integration within a Federal Europe, which I feel would be a good thing.
Mark, Burnley, Lancs
I think it would be a tragedy if the man who acted as Bush's enabler in the unprovoked war of agression against Iraq engaged in by both the United States and Great Britain were to become the first president of Europe when many of the countries of Europe did not support this war. He would become the Bush adminstration's operative in Europe. The American people have finally seen the light and rejected Bush. Europe should similarly reject his enabler.
In addition, the first President of Europe should be from a country that is fully part of it. That is he/she should be from a country that is part of the European Monetary System and the Schengen treaty.
Roland Buck, Morehead, KY, USA
I was never a fan of Blair's New Labour politics, but I think he would be a good thing for Europe and, more importantly, a good man to raise the profile of the EU in the UK.
Dean Gargano, Saint-Etienne, France
blair will make a great EU president. he is the best prime minister this contry has ever had, look at gordon brown, a few months into his job, and he has single handedly crippled the labour party. This cannot be opposed it is for EU members to decide uppon, so making comments about how do i oppose this is stupid, it realy shows how much you know about politics
cheryl, northumberland, united kingdom
When can we finally see the back of this odious man?
I've had a lovely few months of not having to shout expletives at him on the TV every day, and now it looks like he'll be back with even more power ot cause mayhem in the world.
How can we oppose this?
Ray Courtney, Penzance, Cornwall
His plan all along; my father always said he had a single mission and here we witness the real Tony Blair coming out from behind his shell.
Are we witnessing the 666?
richard, London, UK
This really does smack of Omen 4. It isn't Tony Damion Blair is it? Join the Roman Catholic Church, a trip to see the pope, bankrolled by a big American corporation, headman in europe!
Has anyone been watching the stars. No strange constellations appearing?

A high profile and dynamic politician like Blair is all europe needs. Of ourse he is not perfect but just like every others...
Gaetan, Namur, Belgium
Let him be the president of Europe, just make sure the UK cuts all ties with the EU first, he's done enough to wreck this country already!
Anthony, Northampton,
It is what he set his sights on years ago, which is why he agreed to sign away British interets and rights last year. ie the Treaty that is 98% what the French and Dutch rejected last year. Tony Blair marketed himself as a "New Labour" socialist, ie. howe much can I make out of this oppportunity..
Chris, Bonnes, France
I can only hope that other EU leaders (for example Germany) have the opportunity to kill this idea stone dead. As a man who together with the USA took us into the Iraq war and who was opposed in this by all the EU leaders it seems quite bizarre. When we had the leadership of the EU, Blair ranted on about reforming the EU ,gained plaudits for his ideas and then as usual did nothing. Now he is lining up with Sarkozy who in the end may very well turn out for France to be Blair Mark 2 with a scandalous life attached. You can just see what will happen to Europe if this bright pair work in tandem- a march to the end with hapless citizens being able to do nothing. One can only hope that the strain of holding the euro together will break the system down and that Blair finds himself immersed in trying to hold things together.
george, Exeter , UK
Tony Blair would make a great President of Europe. He was the best Prime Minister this country has had.
As for his job with J P Morgan - good luck to him - he deserves everthing he gets. I think he should get double the amount as areward for all that he has one for this country.
Ben Grower, Bournemouth, England
I thought he was running for Pope?

Phill, The Wirral, England
Was breaking Britain not enough? This man is self-righteous and messiahnic and cannot therefore represent modern Europe.
Jonathan, Cambridge, UK
Most recent EU member staes have only just rid themselves of authoritarian socialist governments; why would they want to have our version foisted on them by way of another control freak EU president?
Jonathan Mills, Brighton,
I am begging to think there must be some international conspiracy. Blair was told by the other Europen Leaders he would get the EU Presidency if Britain signed the EU Constitution. In turn Blair got Brown to promise that if he resigned as Prime Minister then Brown would sign the EU Constitution on behalf of Britain. Can't think of any other reason why any one would want this failed politician, Blair as President.
chris, Woodbridge,
I guess, we, the people, have no say about that.
Another democracy in the making. Thanks to this bunch of layers and their laws.
Laurent, London, Uk
One question only.
How do I oppose this?
Mike Williams, Rothwell, Northants
Career objectives:
Prime Minister UK (left before the pidgeons came home to roost)
Middle East Peace Envoy (recognises a loser when he sees it)
EU president
Leader of the free world
Leader of the not so free world (it would be then)
Pope (no problem just rewrite the rules)
Everyone will be happy ever after, it would then be a criminal offence not to be!
Alan, Luton,
If they elect him they are quite definitely mad. He will probably want to invade Russia or bomb China
