Amid the frustration and delays of airport immigration halls a new beacon of
welcome could soon make travellers feel a little more welcome: a Tory MP has
tabled a motion calling for the introduction of traditional tea trolleys.
The idea was suggested to Michael Fabricant, MP for Lichfield, by Mark Price,
the managing director of Waitrose. “I have travelled quite widely and I
don’t think that any country offers this,” Mr Fabricant told The
Times. “It would be a world first.”
He said that he was sure that foreign tourists, as well as British passengers,
would appreciate the service. “It wouldn’t do the Government any harm to
compensate people for the long waits they’re now experiencing at passport
controls,” he added.
Mr Price said: “I do a lot of foreign travel and I have been progressively
disappointed with how poor it feels when you return home. The whole
experience is pretty bleak. I thought wouldn’t it be nice if, when you
arrived in the UK, you were greeted with a nice cup of tea.”
Tea ladies would be chosen for their cheerfulness, the pair said.
Four other MPs have backed the motion. The Home Office declined to comment.
BAA, the airport operator, said that it welcomed any suggestions “to improve
the passenger experience”.

The most welcomming airport I have ever visited is Bermuda with a pianist playing appropriate tunes as you await immigration(interupted only by the occasional barking of the drug sniffer dogs!)
A real welcome compared with the open hostility in the US, tea trolleys would be a wonderful welcome and introduction to the UK and our culture.

Is this the sort of thing we are paying our MP's £60,000 a year to come up with? I'm speechless

Oh yes, let's keep the priorities right.
Keep the borders open and welcome all the illegals and economic migrants in with a cup of tea, as a foretaster of the other things the taxpayer will fund for them...

This is already done in Auckland airport, New Zealand. A free tea and coffee counter is situated next to the luggage reclaim area.

Jolly good show! That'll at least let Johnny foreigner know he's arrived in a civilised country!
Seriously, i think if Waitrose were to offer such a service it would certainly be a superb idea. However I am sure the prices would be excessive and this would take away from the service. If it can be done at a reasonable price with a regular service and using decent staff, then I say go for it!
