Michael Martin, the Speaker and a leading figure in the fight against the publication of more detail on expenses, has one of the most generous parliamentary allowances of any MP.
Mr Martin, 62, is chair of the House of Commons Commission, which decided to engage in a legal battle to prevent the publication of a more detailed breakdown on MPs’ expenses. But his own arrangements have been called into question in recent weeks.
Mr Martin, from Glasgow, was a sheet metal worker, became a trade union organiser and entered Parliament for Labour in 1979.
The Speaker receives £137,579 in pay, as well as a grace-and-favour appartment inside the Parliamentary Estate which Commons authorities claim has not been separately valued.
Last month The Times disclosed that his wife, Mary, had claimed £4,280.20 for taxis since May 2004, which were “entirely in connection with household expenditure that supports the Speaker’s duties”. According to the Speaker’s spokesman, she needs to take taxis to shop for food for official functions. The wife of the Speaker has never had a formal role before.
Subsequently it emerged that nearly £50,000 of taxpayers’ money had been spent on providing free air travel for Mrs Martin. She had been given permission to claim travel expenses when her husband became Speaker in 2000. Mrs Martin received £24,485 for foreign flights when accompanying her husband on ten official trips over three years from 2004.
A Commons spokesman said: “The burden on a Speaker’s family can be great at times. When Mr Martin was appointed it was accepted that Mrs Martin was entitled to receive support for certain travel expenses to enable her to support her husband in his official duties.”
The couple’s son Paul Martin has represented Glasgow Springburn in the Scottish Parliament since 1999.

The message that is coming from all the MP's is that greed is good. The most worrying thing is that by and large these parasites have not broken any rules.I think the time has arrived for some big rule changes, but not by MP's.

Fleecing the taxpayer. It must be the UK's biggest family business.
An investigation should also be carried out into the number of sons and daughters entering the trough.

Speaker Martin and his wife should have their expense accounts vetted to the same extent as those of Conway and if Peter Hain is to be invertigated by the police, so should they.
Trouble is, where do you stop?
These people think they are more royal than the Royals but outside Parliament they'd be on benefits, fiddling them as well.

Isn't it about time that we all realised that successive Governments in this country have been as corrupt as their predecessors and any successive Government in the future will be as corrupt again. It is the hard working British Tax payer that is bearing all the costs as usual and with the cost of fuel and Council Taxes so high, ordinary people are getting fed up with it all. Younger people can't get on the housing ladder, mainly because income has not kept pace with inflation over the years, not because of the increase of house prices. It should all be relative and because of all the foreign aid we give away and wars we keep fighting it's no wonder our overheads as a country are so high. We should take a leaf out of the Swiss book or the French. Don't get involved in any wars unless absolutely necessary and don't take any notice of any laws made outside of the UK. Let's please the British Tax payer by making his life easier and put some money in his pockets for a change.

So he does not want to divulge his expenses eh. HHmmm funny that isn't it.
Its about time we got a grip in this country and account for all out Tax's, That lot at westminster seem very good at spending our money on themselves and family.
