DAVID CAMERON is to abandon plans for “green” taxes amid fears of a backlash from voters unhappy about having to pay for climate change.
A leaked policy paper commissioned by the Tory leader warns that action on the environment is too often seen in terms of “consumer sacrifice”.
Instead the document urges Cameron to copy the more positive “can do” strategy of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the California governor, who has invested huge sums in businesses developing green technologies.
Cameron has faced controversy for floating plans to increase tax on air travel, polluting cars and food packaging.
He was last week accused of hypocrisy by taking a winter sun break in South Africa after earlier urging people to holiday in the UK.
The Conservative leader has also been criticised over the wind turbine erected on the roof of his Notting Hill home.
The leaked paper, written by Greg Barker, the Conservative environment spokesman, admits that Cameron’s green stunts have proved unpopular.
“From a wind turbine on DC’s new house to the controversy over low-cost airlines, to the endless green lifestyle newspaper supplements, the emphasis is usually seen through the prism of the individual.
“Solutions are often perceived to involve higher costs, more tax or some form of consumer sacrifice . . . too much of the burden and not enough of the opportunities are being placed on consumers.”
The Tory document calls for Britain to adopt tough new targets, cutting green emissions by 80% by 2050.
Labour policy is for more modest cuts of 60% in that period.

Fair enough, but it seems that Cameron hasn't got off the global warming bandwagon if he's still banging on about 80% cuts. About time he started publicly to question the science as the solar theory gathers pace.

Non of the top politicians are really stupid, they just seem that way!
They ALL must know AGW is a con.
It will just take a BRAVE one to admit it now after all this time.

Good. The only green in green taxes that New Labour sees is the colour of the money. The Conservatives should not follow this sleazy path.
RB, Aberdeen,
Hurrah for some common sense at last. Yet another reason to vote Tory at the next election.
Katherine, Reading,
I think this would be a very shrewd move in light of the pseudo scientific guff that has emanated from Political parties in recent years over Global warming which will obviously be an excuse to jack taxes up.
The fact that this year the temperature of the earth has dropped one degree and at the same time there appears to have been unusually low sun spot activity it is about time that the Blair's and Gore's of this world actually did some homework on what is really going on.Would'nt it be absurd as we all gear up for huge investment to cut carbon emissions to subsequently find out that carbon is not the problem and that every penny spent may well turn out to be absolutely pointless?
Philip, Ipswich,
Another U Turn.
Well 4 more years to a Socialist Government.
The Director, LONDON, England
Perhaps he's finally realised that it is one great big con, now if only he can work out that the EU is exactly the same and pull us out, we might have a leader worthy of our vote.
