The number of failed asylum-seekers and their dependants removed from Britain fell last year by more than a quarter compared with the previous 12 months, according to government figures published yesterday.
In a further blow for ministers, asylum applications rose by almost 20 per cent in the last three months of 2007 but fell by 8 per cent in the 15 states that were EU members before expansion four years ago.
Home Office figures showed that 13,595 asylum-seekers and their dependants were removed from the country in 2007 compared with more than 18,000 in the previous year.
The top five nationalities accounting for the biggest number of asylum removals in the last quarter of 2007 were Afghans, Turks, Nigerians, Pakistanis and Serbians.
Yesterday’s statistics highlight the difficulty that the Government is having in removing failed asylum-seekers, particularly if they have been settled in the country for some years or are from states from which it is difficult to obtain new travel documents.
The sharp fall in asylum removals coincided with the Government’s drive to increase the number of foreign national prisoners who are removed at the end of their sentences.
Asylum applications rose by 19 per cent to 6,910 in the last quarter of 2007, compared with the same period 12 months earlier. Overall the number of asylum applicants and dependants fell by 1 per cent to 27,905.
The figures show that 63,140 people were removed from Britain, of whom more than 42,000 were illegal immigrants and overstayers.
Liam Byrne, the Immigration Minister, said: “We deported the highest ever number of foreign lawbreakers – up by a huge 80 per cent – and we attacked illegal working much harder because it undercuts British wages, with 40 per cent more illegal working operations.”
Mr Byrne’s statement made no reference to the fall in removing failed asylyum-seekers from the country.
Separate figures published yesterday showed that 800,000 migrants from eight Eastern European states – including 500,000 from Poland – have applied to register for work since 2004, but in the past 12 months the numbers applying have fallen.
The number of applicants fell from 234,700 in 2006 to 214,500 last year – just 4,000 above the 2005 figure.
The number of Poles approved to work fell from 162,000 in 2006 to 147,000 last year. However, there were increases in approved applicants from Hungary – up from 7,060 to 8,720 – and Slovakia – rising from 21,755 to 22,020 The slowdown in immigrants registering for work comes as other EU states lift restrictions imposed in 2004. Just over 89,000 immigrants from Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are claiming child benefit, and there have been 4,900 successful applications for income support, job-seeker’s allowance or state pension. A further 51,500 are claiming tax credits, and 1,021 are receiving help for homelessness.
David Frost, director-general of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “The comparative success of the UK economy in recent years has been largely due to the influx of willing workers from Eastern Europe.”

To Awett the Eritrean failed asylum seeker. We know your country is not safe. You and your family may not be involved in the power struggles there. But there are a lot of countries like Eritrea around the world. Are you suggesting that the populations of those countries can move to the UK for safety? If not, what is special about you compared with all the other Eritreans (etc) who are in danger? I think we need to understand why another several million people would not feel entitled to come here for safety before we decide to make special exceptions.
Colin , Shrewsbury,
I am an Eritrean national failed asylum seeker and I have been living here around five years now. My country is not safe to return. Infact homeoffice knows that any young Eritrean can not be returned back home because of not safe. So what is the futurity of those people suffering in the UK

one question. I am asylum seeker from jordan, i have lived in this country for nearly ten years now and i still havent got permit to work. WHY?? But do not think that i did not try to do anything about it. I went to home ofice in liverpool few times, i wrote a few letters to home ofice secretay, i went to se MP, i sent thousand emails and nothing. WHY?

I hope people look at these figures particularly those in the last paragraph. The real people who are a burden on the welfare system, NHS, and public services are EEA nationals. They are successful in claiming benefits, and a whole host of benefits. Migrants who come to the UK from Non-EEA states as spouses, students, work permit holders and other categories cannot claim benefits. But the government seems obsessed with targeting these migrants rather than EEA nationals who blatently have come to the UK to take advantage of our welfare system. The principle of freedom of movement is a disaster for the UK, it was supposed to work two ways... people coming to the UK and vice versam, I would love to compare the statistics of the number of UK nationals going to work in these EEA countries.

Is there anything that this pathetic Government has done right? Even the ground beneath is now complaining about the sheer weight of people entering our Country. New Labour you are useless.

the influx of africans with hiv into the uk is something i have been writing about for the past 3 years and is fundamentally unreported. You will meet a wall of silence on this issue.
I have written to every newseditor in the UK, MP's and various other advertising bodies but every time, the letters are blocked, unreported, ignored or denied.
I believe their is a conspiracy of silence on this issue that has been issued from the top down by our vainglorious leaders because it a political hot potato with racial overtones.
The FACT is and by saying this my comment will be ignored.
Between 80 and 90% of NEW hiv cases diagnosed in the heterosexual community in the UK in 2005/2006 were amongst african immigrants legal and illegal.
This is then reported as a "massive" rise in the spread of hiv in the indiginous UK heterosexual community which is fundamentally untrue.
I believe this will be one of a sequence of cover ups which i hope will eventually bring this spinning government down.

i've recently had the misfortune of having to use the NHS (which my taxes pay for) and have been in hospital waiting rooms with 20-30 other people where i'm the only one who can speak english. i find it hard to believe that these people can contribute to society when they can't even communicate with society. good to know my taxes can pay for their housing, health, education and even a few trips down the pub. i've had enough, i'm emigrating this year, see if someone will pay for me to do nothing.
rudy, london,
The national media would appear to have missed out the wars in Turkey, Nigeria and Pakistan... or the Government isn't telling us something about "asylum".

what a surprise, given all the amnestys gordon has given he has blatantly ignored overwhelming public opinion. no wonder he is so low in the polls....

Why do you continually fail to report on the real issue which is the amada of africans into the UK. Nigeria is moving on mass here. As a supply midwife working all over London, 70% of babies delivered are African. For every one white child born here there are 4 blacks. Every afro/carribean household is on some form of benefit. In Uk we pay people to breed, pay them not to work, pay them for all their needs. And if we dont ,they scream racist!.
98% or Afro/ Carribs are in counc il or housing association accomodation. 73% of women with HIV in UK hospitals are from the African sub continent. These are the real issues. The media here are likme Pravda in the old days, frightened and too dishonest to report the truth.
