- A new 'national day' to be established by 2012, alongside the Olympics and what would be the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. It could be made into a public holiday.
- Special US-style allegiance ceremonies to be staged for school children, to increase national identity. He recommended holding them in landmark buildings such as the Tate Britain, the National Gallery and Edinburgh Castle and said he supported pupils swearing an oath.
- An overhaul of outdated "treason" laws, which currently include offences such as to "violate" - sleep with - the wife of either the sovereign or heir to the throne. The last person to be hanged for treason was William Joyce, better known as Lord Haw-Haw, who was executed in 1946 for his wartime pro-Nazi propaganda broadcasts aimed at sapping British morale.
- A reduction in university fees for students who volunteer to take part in civic activities.
- A change in citizenship laws so that foreigners who cannot take British nationality because their home nations do not permit dual citizenship should become "associate citizens" of the UK.
- Language loans for people who cannot afford to pay for English lessons.
- A council tax discount for people who complete volunteer work in the community. This could be earned by organising neighbourhood recycling projects, helping children learn to read in schools, or setting up a residents’ association.
- Ministers should consider withdrawing the right to vote in UK elections for Commonwealth and Irish citizens.
- A review of the current ban on asylum seekers taking paid jobs.
- Lowering the fee charged for becoming a British citizen from the current £655, with a larger discount for foreigners who apply as soon as they become eligible.
- The creation of a new National Citizens’ Corps, whose members would provide advice to others on training and development for citizenship.
- Setting up a new "Deliberation Day" to be held before each General Election to encourage political debate and other events.

This all sounds like the "neighbourhood" organisations in cold-war Russia where "collaborative" behaviour was fostered (ie required) by Government recommendations (ie edicts).
Watch out for People's Committees and larger-than-life images of BigBrotherBrown on postage stamps.

Another Government department, more jobs for the civil servants. It has nothing to do with allegiance, it is all to do with making sure that people like Lord Goldsmith and his department have a job and keeping them in the headlines.

Why is it then, that the British Police are now dropping their oath of allegiance to the Queen and instead claiming allegiance to "the Government"? Whoever they may be!
This may be a small but important point regarding the departure from the loyalty that we have demanded from our plod.
Why do politicians want the public to toady to the Monarchy whilst at the same time insisting that the police obey every political edict passed down to them? (Irrespective of whether it is good or not for the public, who pays for those services)

How about abolishing tax rebates for non UK citizens?
How about a law where new UK citizens have to work for a minimum of 10 years before qualifying for a pension, housing benefit, job seekers allowance etc.?
To be honest I can think of a hundred other things that won't happen. I really worry about the state of the UK. I've left and 'aint coming back.

You missed some.
-The creation of a youth organisation, known as the Spies, to encourage children to keep an eye on their parents and report any signs of unpatriotic activity (including benefit cheating) and/or collaboration with the Brotherhood, sorry, al-Qaeda, to the Ministry of Love.
-A citizens' group, the Junior Anti-Sex League, set up to challenge unproductive sexual activity and encourage the diversion of this energy into activities that benefit Britain.
-Two minutes of the morning set aside in every school, community centre and workplace to show the citizens educational films about the enemies of Britain, such as Al-Qaeda, private equity firms and the Conservative Party. Citizens will be encouraged to vent their frustrations and praise the efforts of our fearless leader, Big Brown, in combating these forces of evil.
Sam, Bristol,
The whole idea of allegiance ceremonies is so completely un-British to be laughable. Labour and associated cronies are really grabbing a straws now - can they not think up any good ideas anymore? Perhaps a true test of "Britishness" is to cover up dealings with Saudi Arabia?
