Gordon Brown has all but written off Ken Livingstone’s chances of winning the London mayoral election, according to close allies.
Senior figures in Downing Street believe that if Mr Livingstone wins it will be by the narrowest of margins.
Mr Brown revealed yesterday that he plans a trip to the US as the fight for London reaches a climax next month. David Cameron has chosen to appear alongside Boris Johnson when the Conservative candidate officially begins his campaign next week.
Some Brown allies are already consoling themselves that a Johnson victory “would be a disaster” for Mr Cameron. Others, including senior Cabinet supporters, fear that a Johnson mayoralty would hand the Tories a prize platform for building bridges with the business community in the City.
Senior staff on the Johnson campaign say that Mr Cameron’s explicit endorsement reflects growing confidence in Conservative headquarters about his chances of deposing Mr Livingstone on May 1.
Mr Johnson is benefiting from poll leads for the Conservatives nationally in recent weeks, with the most recent survey suggesting that he enjoys a 12-point advantage over the incumbent.
His campaign will intensify next week, say insiders. The party’s leadership made the appointment of Lynton Crosby, the Australian strategist, a condition of continuing campaign finance.

Congestion charge shouldn't have anything to do with the campaign. It is a necessary evil. Traffic in London is a nightmare. Why on earth would we want more Londoners bringing their cars back into the city?
Dan, London,
Ken is your typical corrupt communist. I am suprised that capitalist London has entertained him for so long!
Kath, Oxford, UK
At least Boris has a personality, which cannot be said for 99.9% of the political cast.
Dave, Sussex, UK
hey i live in london, have done all my life and i'm going to vote for Boris, ken has made a complete clown's act out of the position so maybe Boris is the right man for the job!!! hopefully he'll get rid of that great driving tax highway robbery of a congestion charge, thats now more focused on cutting emmissions than cutting congestion???
tim, london, england
I hope Brown doesn't stop till he reaches Scotland!
andy, london,
Boris is very intelligent but is perhaps cursed with having a good sense of humour, something most politicians seem to lack. As for Red Ken, how can anyone vote for someone who admires Fidel Castro and other such marxists?
It is time for change and Boris is the man.
B J Deller, Marbella, Spain
Good on you, Chris! I too voted for Ken but have had a Road to Damascus moment and seen the light!
ricky, london, uk
Never mind whether or not people want Ken Livingston to be Mayor of London; does anyone really want Boris The Clown to be take over the position? The Tories must be quite contemptuous of the position of Mayor or they would never have let such a fool as Boris Johnson stand.
I never thought that I'd say it but I really hope that Ken wins.
Marc, Paris,
Good bye Ken. Good riddance. Now for Gordon.
D Case, Newquay,
I cant wait for May 1st. Having voted for Labour in the last 7 general elections (and Ken in the last 2 mayoral elections) I am going to switch to the Conservatives. Labour has had its time and failed to deliver. (what was 'education, education, education' all about?) I am looking forward even more to the next general election to get rid of Gord and his bunch of second raters.
chris, croydon, uk
So bottler Brown doesn't want to be around when the chickens start coming home ................ there's a surprise.
Donna Walker, Effingham, Surrey
Boris does not (must not!) need to win to have the required effect. A narrow defeat to ken would be ideal for Cameron.
Ian, Truro, UK
Brown disappears to avoid being associated with a negative headline - a creature of habit it seems.
john j, Peterborough, UK
What a surprise! More support for Boris from people who don't actually have to live in London.
Nick, London,
Come on Boris!! its time to get rid of ken, billions wasted for very little improvement. Also we need a snub to Sian Berry - a betrayal of green principles in the pursuit of socialism, another example how the green agenda has beeen hijacked. boris the only real option!!
manav, London, UK
If Ken gets beaten I'm sure he'll get a plum job at the BBC.
Ian Burgess, Bristol,
Let London be rid of Livingstone, the tin pot dictator and his numerous cronies and hangers-on.
Londoners desperately need violent crime on the streets of the capital cleaned up and that has not happenned under eight years of Livingstone and 'friends'. We need a total overhaul of public transport and an unbiased review of Ken's Congestion Charge.
What we do NOT need is another term of incompetence, sleaze and higher GLA taxes.
Goodbye Ken and Co.
RM, London, England
ken is still going to win you muppets! the media is just making sure that enough londoners get worried enough to go out and vote! boris - AS IF
bob, London,
To introduce a little note of cynicism toward this article, do we remember Tony campaigning ardently for Ken the last two times around the bloc? No. Hardly surprising that Brown would follow suit and leave Mr Livingstone to his usual devices.
david john marusza, london, islington
Unfortunately whoever wins, we will still be saddled with the vile and punitive Congestion Charge tax.
Sedgwick, London, UK
Ahh Gordon Brown the fair weather friend.
John, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire
Boris is absolutely clueless with hardly a solid well thought out policy. God help Londoners if we let him be Mayor!
Pol O Geibheannaifgh, London,
"The Bottler did it Milord" - hardly a surprise to see that yet again he is unlikely to be around when the going looks like getting tough, but that's all to the good - time for a change from KL and his accolytes and the less support from on high the better. This bunch needs to be got rid of as soon as possible, together with all their mates up the road in the big house - it's the next best thing to a General Election - wake up, you true British voters and put them out of our misery!!!
Milo, Uckfield, UK
"hope of holding" ???
Most of us fervently hope that the reverse will be the case.
London without Livingstone and life without Labour.
Anna, Manchester, UK
Umm - would the blatant corruption of Ken and some of his acolytes be an issue, or do we expect all our politicians to be so tainted that it is not a concern anymore ?
Ian, Berwick , UK
Seconded.
Albert Hall, kettering,
Ken should never have trusted NEW LABOUR and come back to the fold - being independent was his trump card. Perhaps old loyalties die hard !! Personally I was relieved as hell to leave the Labour Party in 2003.
Ian Payne, WALSALL,
Boris will be wonderful for London after years of the washed out Livingstone. Just wish we had a general election to get rid of McBrown as well.
roger Kingston, york,
