Nicolas Sarkozy lashed out at a French journalist today who suggested that his new wife had overshadowed the French President during his state visit to the UK.
His outburst – during the Anglo-French summit in North London – showed Mr Sarkozy’s sensitivity towards headlines about Carla Bruni as he tries to convince public opinion in France of his diplomatic gravitas after months of media coverage about his private life.
During their press conference at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, Gordon Brown and Mr Sarkozy announced plans for greater Anglo-French co-operation on immigration, climate change and the Darfur conflict.
Although the leaders pledged for "restraint and dialogue" in China over Tibet, they diverged over a possible boycott of the Olympic ceremony. Mr Sarkozy continued to hold out the possibility of a boycott, a move which Mr Brown stressed would not be replicated by Britain.
But it was a furious exchange with Le Figaro's Bruno Jeudy – who asked Mr Sarkozy in French whether Mrs Bruni Sarkozy had stolen the show – that had tongues wagging after the press conference.
Mr Sarkozy retorted: "Thank you Mr Jeudy for the huge progress you have made in speaking the language of Shakespeare."
The President then added: "You have really raked the barrel. The fact that you should even put this question to me shows that you do have a very insensitive experience of marriage."
Mr Sarkozy then launched a vigorous defence of his Italian-born wife who he married in Paris in February only months after divorcing his ex-wife, Cecilia.
“So much has been said and so much has been written that I am proud that people have seen her for what she really is, and that there is a sense of justice," he said.
"Let me tell you, I have been deeply moved by what has been said over the last two days.
"I think she has been an honour to our country, not simply because of the way she looks, but but beyond that everyone understands that this is a woman who has belief, sensitivity and humanity."
Standing next to Mr Sarkozy on the podium, Mr Brown smiled and said only that the President and Mrs Bruni Sarkozy were "welcome to visit Britain at any time".
Asked whether his initial, gushing praise of the UK in speeches yesterday would last when differences between the allies emerged, Mr Sarkozy responded: "It is not a one night stand - I would say we could even go together into the next day's breakfast."
As part of that increased co-operation the two leaders announced there would be extra French patrols at ports and more spot-checks for people traffickers.
On economic issues they called for greater transparency on the global financial markets, urging banks to make "full and prompt disclosure" about write-downs in the wake of the credit crunch.
"We agreed the need for greater transparency in financial markets to ensure that banks make full and prompt disclosure of the scale of write-offs, including finding ways to give greater certainty on the valuations of complex financial assets," they said in a joint statement issued ahead of the press conference.
This afternoon, a panel of 13 French ministers and their British counterparts were due to sit down for a conference at the Emirates Stadium to discuss bilateral cooperation in a number of areas.

The French journalist was right.
What we see in Sarkozy's outburst is just a continuation of personality traits he has shown since the beginning of his term as president.
The French people pretty clearly made a serious mistake electing this man.
JOHN CHUCKMAN, toronto, Canada
The Times front page photo March 28: "Just a kiss? Not when the world is watching!" I saw a couple with the man giving his wife a tender imbrace and a loving kiss.
james hazan, huddersfield, U.K
I do admire him ...at least he didnt maintain an illicit affair for years ...and I read that his ex-wife remarried in the US recently..so everyones happy, non?
Chris, Maine, USA
Mr Sarkozy is le France'président. Alas ! I don't bother Carla. Who not long ago dragged through the mud french people (in the "Daily mail" I believe).
She's just an ex model. The "London show" of this lady is nothing but a show. I wish we could have had a true président, but alas...
Deborah, Paris, France
Strange that the French who once glorified the love between Napoleon and Josephine find it so difficult to accept the updated version they have at present.
Ray Massart, Hombeek, Belgium
Well done the UK ! The Royal family and the goverment have shown more elegance and decency by ignoring the ugly gossip and jealousy that the couple Bruni-Sarkozy provokes in France. I have the great luck to know very well Italy (my country) , France, (I lived there for 20 years) and the UK (I have been living here). I am not at all a fan of Carla and Nicolas but I find absolutely inacceptable the way that French press behaves (even the most serious one). It feeds all this category of frustrated, jealous and envious people who wants to know more and more to spit even more on them.
It was really inappropriate today of this French journalist of "Le Figaro" to ask Sarkozy about his wife. It is perfectly indecent and vulgar. Un peu de tenue s'il plait ! It shows that France is very conservative about power. Everything must stay hidden...
Sarkozy-Bruni's romance is the perfect example of the European "entente" and should intensify Franco-Italian cooperation and all the others...
Daniela Cadoni, London, Unites Kingdom
I have never been so interested in French political life as now because it is so out in the open and reflects reality of real life. However I think she should not feel uncomfortable about her size and wear heels regardless of her husband's height. It is not an easy role for her but she seems to have handled it with elegance and aplomb. Bravo to her and I enjoyed looking at her outfits-- she will be the best advertisement for French fashion and may even convince women to reconsider donning a dress or suit more often. Even is she was not a model she seems to be creative, cosmopolitan and have a zest for life, I wish her happiness and longevity in her new role as wife and stepmother as well as first lady to France. I would love to read her autobiography!

One would only hope that a husband would stand up for his wife against a public criticism by a reporter.
EAG, Maritimes, Canada
God save the Queen!
rick, doncaster,
How juvenile, attempts to embarrass the President over his marriage, and previoiusly about his wife. No sense of dignity. US reporter on 60 Minutes asked him, in Elysee Palace on a busy day, about his wife, while he was still married to his ex. He ended interview right there. Such arrogance of the press. Sarko takes pains to build rapprochement with the US, now Britain. Just what we need. A French leader making an effort to be accessible.
Tom , Waxahachie, US, Texas
Mr. President, Don't wear a rubber nose and then complain when people call you a clown.
Christopher Hobe Morrison, Pine Bush, Ulster County, NY, USA
I admire him. What man wouldn't defend his wife? I would have punched the reporter. I guess that's why I'm not a politician. Bravo !!
Larrys, Stratford,
Mrs Sarkozy is impeccable when she is dressed and his husband does it best when he don't open the mouth .
Georget, Saint-Ouen, FRANCE
There is a lot of jealousy here. Give the man a chance. I think he is refreshing after the years of Chirac pomposity.
Freddie, Stanmore, UK.
Freddie Albert, Stanmore, UK
At least Sarkozy shows guts when talking about boycotting the Olympics in China. Vive la France (for once)
B, Wadhurst, East Sussex
President and Mrs Sarkozy display so many quintessentially chic Gallic qualities that it makes
some people really sick. It's such pity that there are so many plain and ugly people in the world who have neither the style nor the sensitivity nor the sympatico to recognise the effort the Sarkozys have put into their lives to lift them out of the kind of mediocrity that bedevils their insanely jealous detractors.
Christoff, Franschoek, South Africa
Carla Bruni is a sun ray in the cold waters of politics. We french people are very proud of her natural elegance. Similar to Lady Diana or Jackie Kennedy. Thanks to the Queen for perfectly welcoming her and our president.
Michel Xima, Salon de Provence, France
You miss the point Brian. Women want to look like Carla to attrack the attention of men, in particular men of high social standing and power.
So who's chasing who, really?
Cliff, Marseille,
Roll right up for a glimpse of La Carla. We can all see the glamour but what are her beliefs and where is evidence of her humanity?
PL, Montreal, Canada
Which one of us man does not like to have a beautiful woman at his side,? I do. People more then we like to think about it they like to see woman more then man.Especially good looking ones.
The visit went well, all proper, in good taste, friendly and every one went home happy, especially the French president who went home to his bad more happy then most man,or some of the man today.
Good luck to him, her, and to every good lokking woman whose husband is a powwrful president.
God save the Queen,England and the British peoples for putting such a wonderful welcome..
vespasianus, Paramus n.j, United States
Personally, I prefer our Queen. I think she has over the years shown far more of what we are about than any politician.
mike, Winchester, UK
Gordon Brown probably welcomed Sarkozy because he hopes we'll at least be grateful not to have a vain, randy little goat as PM. Sorry Gordon, you're so bad that even when compared with Sarko it's him that looks marginally the more competent.
Neil McF, Southampton, England
I feel sorry for the French to elect Nicolas Sarkozy as leader who is behaving as Playboy instead of a man stands for French greatness. Nicolas Sarkozy is a very bad roll model for youngsters. God save the French.
Appan , Hounslow, London
Sounds like a lot of jealous people out there, stop knocking the French President, just because he has an elegant and beautiful wife. Give the man a chance to show us what he can do, and to prove he is a man of more than just words, but action too.
Phil , London,
Her CD is actually quite good :)
Paul, Coventry,
Steal the show? Of course there is heightened interest due to the added glamour of an attractive consort but we all know that already. So the journalists questions was silly and I suspect only meant to antagonise Mr. Sarkozy and try and create some controversy for his copy deadline. Everyone loves a bit of glamour, and long may we remain human.
Roz, London, UK
The fact that Nicolas Sarkozy, Gordon Brown and the Duke of Edinburgh were just bit players when Carla Bruni visited Britain simply proves that women, particularly elegant beautiful women, hold the real power amongst us humans, and how misguided the Polly Toynbeeâs of this world are by trying to emulate us pathetic and feeble minded men.
Brian Christley, Abergele , UK
