David Cameron accused Gordon Brown of having no coherent vision for the country today after Labour’s mauling in the local elections last week.
In rowdy Commons exchanges at Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Cameron said that the Government was “lurching from one relaunch to another”. He said: “What’s missing is what is really needed - that is a clear vision and some strong leadership for Britain.”
Mr Brown said the choice was between a Government that had created jobs, stability and growth and a Conservative Party that had “nothing to offer the people of this country”. He warned that no amount of “slick salesmanship” from the Opposition leader could obscure the “fact” that there was nothing of substance in Tory policy.
The loud trading of insults follow the publication of a poll for The Times showing that more than a half of Labour supporters believe that Gordon Brown should stand down to make way for a more electable alternative.
Today’s Populus poll — the first survey since last Thursday’s local elections when Labour lost the London mayoral contest and 331 council seats in England and Wales — shows a dramatic collapse of confidence in Mr Brown’s leadership.
The Prime Minister’s personal rating has also dropped sharply, along with that for Labour. He now trails David Cameron and Nick Clegg in the leadership stakes.
Support for Labour has fallen by four points in a month to 29 per cent. The Tories have gained one point to 40 per cent; their lead of 11 points is the largest in the five years of Populus polls. The Liberal Democrats are two points up at 19 per cent, with other parties one point ahead at 12 per cent.
The fallout from last week’s election dominated exchanges at PMQs. Boris Johnson, London’s new Tory Mayor, arrived to loud cheers from the Conservatives benches, which erupted again as Mr Brown arrived to take his place.
Shailesh Vara, Tory MP for Cambridgeshire North West, was first into the attack, demanding: “As you are the only person in the House with experience of unseating a sitting Prime Minister, what is your own estimate as to how long you’ve got?”
Mr Brown retorted: “Once again the big policy questions of substance. I’ll tell you what this Government has done under two prime ministers - we’ve created the highest employment in history, cut child poverty and pensioner poverty, doubled investment in health and social services and got the best educational results in our history.
“None of that would have happened under a Conservative government.”
Mr Brown welcomed Mr Johnson to the House, telling him: “I hope you will continue the record of your predecessor in social housing and creating affordable housing.”

Well, Brown has only got one eye after all. Is that perhaps why he can't see the wood for the trees?

"more than he can claim for his ability to sell himself to 55% of his own party"
It is not 55% of party but of the LAB voters! But then he probably assumed that he could fool ALL of them ALL of the time. A mistake that he will pay dearly for.
Policy stealing is his forte; not having the nouse!
M. Cawdery, Portadown, Co. UK, EU.
Does it matter? Cost of daily necessities such as food, fuels and transport is rocketing. As the cherry on the top even more stealth taxes are introduced. Abolition of the 10p tax rate doesn't help either! albeit promising the weakest of the society compensation, who is going to do all the paperwork
Ron, Sussex, UK
I'm sorry to say it but the so-called 'jobs' that Labour has created are not worth a carrot, ( nobody can live on the pay) and have been as a by product of the loss of decent well paid manufacturing jobs. Does Brown think we're all stupid?
judy, Liverpool, England
When will Brown give what the electorate want: his resignation and general election. Britain could then start to rebuild itself after years of destruction under his authority at No's 10&11.
Edwin, Bucharest,
Personally I think the PM lacks substance.
Paul, Rochester, UK
Ho hum. I'm quite impressed with Brown's done - is he wrong when he says this: "Weve created the highest employment in history, cut child poverty and pensioner poverty, doubled investment in health and social services and got the best educational results in our history" ?
Ben Coleman, London,
Idon't know about Conservative promises but I doubt a slick salesman would promise "a black hole in public spending, risk to the economy, back to the situation we had in the early 1990s" as Brown said. It sounds more like what he's perpetrating.
Neil McF, Southampton, England
Excellent!!!
So Dame Gordon, the Tories have no policies, isn't this because as soon as they do you will steal them and claim them as your own?
I also don't see that replacing Brown would help Labour. It will still be the same clueless numpties coming up with misguided policies.
Ben Cazot, Kings Lynn, United Kingdom
I am so jaded from listening to the rhetoric and lies coming out of Browns mouth. He has not got the verve, energy or ability to pull this one out of the fire.
Who knows what Cameron would be like as PM, but I think he deserves a go. Labour are deceitful and duplicitous and its time for a change.
Justin, London, UK
Gordon Brown of 'lacking clear vision'?????
Gordon Brown lacks any vision, full stop!!!!!
Andrew Doyle, Manchester,
Are sales people Gordon's latest punch bag? This is the second time in a week that he has used the reference derogatively. He should remember that they do a vital job and, mostly, do it honestly and dilegently which is more than he can claim for his ability to sell himself to 55% of his own party
