David Cameron condemned Labour's determination to raise the spectre of class war in the Crewe & Nantwich by-election as “pathetic” yesterday.
Labour has been keen to portray Edward Timpson, 34, the Conservative candidate, as a “rich Tory boy” whose privileged upbringing places him out of touch with ordinary voters.
On Mr Cameron's first visit to the town last week he and Mr Timpson, part of the shoe repair and key-cutting family, were ambushed by two figures in top hat and tails calling themselves the “Tarporley toffs”. Since then Labour has tried to reinforce the message with a leaflet campaign.
Mr Cameron went on the offensive on his second visit, emphasising Mr Timpson's links with Cheshire, and that, unlike his two main rivals, he has been in place as his party's prospective candidate for the past year.
He said: “This class warfare stuff is ridiculous, out of date and makes the Labour Party look stupid.”
The Conservative leader was ambushed by half a dozen Labour activists with “hoodies” pulled over their heads as he arrived at the town's police station. A Labour MP could be seen loitering in a churchyard across the road before ushering the teenagers to stage the stunt for the TV cameras.
Mr Cameron said later in the sanctuary of his party's campaign headquarters: “We are fighting a positive campaign. We are not disrupting Cabinet ministers when they come here.”
The centre of Crewe showed little sign yesterday of being engulfed in a crucial by-election. The campaign, however, is becoming increasingly bad tempered, with at least one poll putting the Tories ahead of Labour.
A Liberal Democrat strategist told The Times that Labour's strategy was high risk: “There are too many people in the area who are aspirational. They have picked the wrong demographic.”

Yes I am laughing James , we need to expose the "Tarporley toff " for what he is - a multi-millionaire from the footballers wifes area of Kelsall who works in Chester ! He should get out and stay out of Crewe ! We wont be his ticket to parliment (fingers crossed)
tom , Crewe , England
What one would expect from a discrdited Labour party. Time to get rid of them. Once and for all would be nice.
D Case, Nwqquay,
I hate this sort of cheap electioneering. Are the people of Crewe laughing? Imagine if the the tories exhbitied such crass snobbery. The good thing is this stuff wont work. Labour's might have a chance if they employed Zanu PF tactics.
James, Brighton,
Must be the first 'Toff' to live in Crewe!
Jon, Sandbach,
Intriguing that class wasn't an issue when public school boy Anthony, member of the 'Archer's Club' in St John's Oxford, was up against the son of a model clownmaker, Mr John Major. My father was working class and ended up at university, and sent me to public school. Where does that put me?

'A Labour MP could be seen loitering in a churchyard across the road before ushering the teenagers to stage the stunt for TV cameras.'
Isn't there a law against this abuse and manipulation of children? Utterly pathetic...Labour deserve to lose the by-election just for these sorts of tactics.
John, Manchester, UK
How strange that the Gordon Brown has to stoop to such levels - the levels which he has been "fighting against for many years".
This is not a class war, this is purely and simply a Labour Party that is at war with itself and using every trick in the book to fool the UK voters. How very very sad.
MB, Manchester, UK
this "vote winning pretense" of a caring tory party is frankly vomit inducing to watch'
Eric, Southwick, Engla nd
I find it eternally sad that leftwingers and the Labour Party think they have the monopoly on human kindness. The party is regressing to a pre-Blair state and opposition.
Stephen , Norwich, Norfolk
Does anyone have any idea how much MPs have received in salary increases since Labour came to power......?
These people are all out of touch......
But what utter hypocrisy as usual from Labour!
Drew, Nottingham,
What do you expect from Labour, they have no idea of what people want. Their policies and strategies are failing; they have nothing to show for themselves. So the only thing they can do is play the dirty, humiliating games. They are treating people as stupid, without any sense! New Labour strategy!!
YT, London, UK
The Bullingdon Club mentality is still lingering regardless of how hard Cameron trys to hide it....this "vote winning pretense" of a caring tory party is frankly vomit inducing to watch
Eric, Southwick, Engla nd
With their enormous salaries and unmonitored expenses it is the average labour MP who behaves like the undeserving, overprivileged "toffs" they seek to lampoon. I hope Gordon's proud of this behaviour.
Neil McF, Southampton, England
'Tory toffs' eh.
Who might they be?
Tony Blair, 5 homes in excess of £15 million pound.
The Balls couple on £600000 salary and expenses.
Tessa 'I've got so much money I didn't realise I'd paid my mortage off' Jowell.
Tamsin Dunwoody, daughter of two politicians.
OH no they are from new labour.
rob, derby, uk
As I never met Mr Edward Timpson, it's not for me to judge his character but I don't understand why the Tories chose this candidate because his background has become a distraction which should not have been the case.
Edwin Jacob, Hounslow, UK
What a sick way for Labour to honour the memory of Mrs Dunwoody. No dignity whatsoever.
Sean, Surrey, UK
