A record number of foreigners were granted British citizenship last year, according to Home Office figures published today.
Just over 164,600 people were given citizenship —- the highest number of applications granted in any year.
The seven per cent increase in persons given citizenship followed a fall in the previous year.
Since 1997 when Labour came to power almost 2 million people have been awarded citizenship, the figures show.
Three quarters of new citizens last year came from countries in Asia and Africa with the main nationalities being from the Phillipines, Afghanistan, South Africa and Pakistan.
Separate figures showed that the number of people leaving the UK for at least a year reached a record high of an estimated 400,000 in 2006. Almost half the emigrants were UK citizens compared with 149,000 a decade ago.
An estimated 591,000 people entered the country, ten per cent up on the previous year, meaning net migration into the country was about 190,000. The overwhelming majority —- 86 per cent —- of immigrants were non British citizens.
“This continued the trend of high immigration to the UK experienced since 1998,” said the Office for National Statistics which published the International Migration figures.
London was the most common destination for immigrants with 29 per cent saying they intended to stay in the capital.
Almost two thirds of British citizens emigrating went to live in five countries. Just under one third went to Australia or New Zealand, just under a quarter to live in Spain or France and eight per cent to the United States.
The ONS said that while overall immigration has been rising steadily since the late 1990s, there were very different patterns.“For British citizens, there has been a noticeable upward trend of emigration in recent years. This coupled with lower numbers of immigration of British citizens, has resulted in increasing net emigration since 2000," it said. “Conversely immigration of non British citizens has more than doubled since 1997. Emigration of non British citizens has been considerably lower."
The latest asylum figures released by the Home Office show that the number of applications in the first three months of this year rose by 16 per cent compared with the same period last year.

To me, this isn't really a colonialism or race issue, but an economic one. Immigration provides cheap labour at or below the minimum wage for businesses and is thus encouraged by government.
The focus on ethnicity worries people as an effect, but is not the cause. That is economic.
nicholas, Oxford,
The situation is now very serious. Basically relatively wealthy people many with young families are leaving the nation and immigrants are arriving and being given citizenship. What sort of policy is that?
Phil Pickervance, Denton Manchester, England
Reading on Teletext that immigrants are being given citizenship at the rate of three a minute; I make that another 438,000 over the projected maximum life of this government.
Could they be registering as many as possible before the next election, hoping to attract votes based on gratitude?
Maurice Smith, Medway, Kent

I think the US, particularly NYC is becoming more like the UK of the old and London is becoming more like NYC of the 80s and early 90s. Good luck!
james, nyc,
Those below hide from the obvious fact .The "Great" Britain you speak of so proudly is only great because of the fact that the British Empire was built around foreigners and their resources...its power, influence and all else are all products of colonialism.immigrants are here to collect..justly so?
Matt Stephenson, Liverpool,
It is the goal of rulers of this country to ethnically cleanse the English out of the UK. Standing up to our heritage is not an act of aggression. The ethnic cleansing of the English out of England is! We must protect our heritage. As Winston Churchill said: We will never surrender.
Ian, cambridge, england
New Labours new society. England the most densely populated country in Europe and there is no end to this unprecedented immigration.
There will be no Anglo-Saxons left, Labour will have completed their destruction of our society through their minority centric, politically correct politics.
Frank, Home Counties, England
The worrying issue is exactly who is coming in, and who is going out
Richard, Bexhill, UK
So when are we going to change our name? Obviously Great Britain is no longer so great thanks to Labour and the number of non-native born occupying our country. So what would we call it without being politically incorrect? It is a sad state of affairs when the locals are being pushed out in droves
Douglas Cochrane, Halifax,
People come here because our bosses horde resources that should be in their home countries. But I'm not surprised record numbers are leaving, I'm surprised it isn't more. I know people who have fled Britain to Europe for civil liberties reasons.
Andy, Derby, UK
