David Cameron hailed the "end of New Labour" today as he celebrated a crushing victory in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election that cast fresh doubt on Gordon Brown's future as Labour leader.
Mr Cameron was virtually mobbed by the Tory faithful as he arrived in the historic railway town of Crewe only a few hours after the Conservative candidate learned that he had turned a 7,000-vote deficit into a majority of almost 8,000.
He told supporters that he had woken up as the first Tory leader in 30 years to win a by-election over Labour - "and I can tell you it's a pretty good feeling".
"It was a remarkable result, but there won't be one hint of triumphalism or one hint of complacency from this Conservative Party," Mr Cameron added.
"We don't want to win just because Labour is failing. We don't want to win just because the Prime Minister is failing. We want to win because we have the right ideas for Britain's future."
The Crewe and Nantwich seat had been held since 1974 by Gwyneth Dunwoody, the feisty Labour veteran who died in April. Dunwoody's daughter, Tamsin, was selected to defend the seat.
But, with Mr Cameron's campaign backing, the Tory Edward Timpson secured the Conservatives their first by-election gain since 1983 - and their first gain from Labour since 1978 - on a 17.6-per cent swing.
The result confounds claims that Mr Cameron has made little or no headway in the North. Labour had held Crewe since the Second World War and it is 165th on the Tory list of target seats.
It will come as a bitter blow to the Prime Minister after a string of political humiliations and his U-turn over the abolition of the 10p tax band.
This morning, visiting a hospital in London, Mr Brown said that the message from Crewe was "clear and unequivocal".
"The message we are getting is people are concerned. They are concerned about food prices, concerned about petrol prices and concerned about what is happening to the economy," he said. "The message of the British public is clear and unequivocal: they want us to address these challenges."
Earlier, leaving his West London home, Mr Cameron said that Labour had paid the price for running a "backward-looking and divisive" campaign, which focused heavily on Mr Timpson’s background, attacking him as a "toff".

I remember the Labour Party in 1976-8.
Public sector strikes, Incomes policy, Winter of discontent.
Then Thatcher had to sort the unions out and make England Great again, then Major lost the plot and we got 10 years of Labour.
Trouble is there isn't a Thatcher about.
Howard , Basildon, England
When the Labour Party dumped Tony Blair the majority of their MPs thought that a new leader was all that was required to make them popular once again. Unfortunately, the reality was always very different. What was required in fact was a new, charismatic leader, and new policies.
Neil, Gloucestershire, England
Mark Wood's memory does not go back far enough. Mrs Thatcher had to spend the first few years of her time pulling the UK back from the brink of bankruptcy - unpleasant work, but someone had to do it. After 11 years of a Labour government, we now need another Mrs Thatcher.
Martin, Newmarket, Suffolk
The Labour party had 11 years to deliver on "Education Education Education", "Tough on Crime, Tough on the causes of Crime", "24 hours to save the Health Service" etc etc....
Time for a change.
Kay, London, UK
Is this really the end of new Labour? David Cameron has claimed to be the heir of Tony Blair, has said he likes Britain the way it is, advocates hugging hoodies, is committed to continued EU membership, and leads a party that almost unanimously supported the invasion of Iraq. What is the difference?
Philip Skalla, London, England
The result speaks for itself. No hyperbole, hysterics or raking up of old graves necessary. That. Is. All.
Chris, London EC2, UK
The tories will be an absolute disaster for Britain. Do we really want to be run by this bunch of selfish public school boys again?
John , Taipei ,
Help the British working class who were once labour voters, tax them, put up the cost of living and petrol, take away there importance in the job market by letting cheap foreign workers take there jobs, then sit there in a bumbling mess saying your'e listening to the people. Too late mr Brown seeya
bob, notts, uk
Much of this inflation is caused by immigration. Demand for houses up, demand for hospitals and schools up. Vast amounts spent on internal security. Dole paid to people priced out of work.
Not long ago they told us that diversity was our strength. Now even the CRE amits that that was claptrap.
JohnW, Oldham,
England's success is not based upon Labour, Tories or Lib Dems being better than the other. Politicians are all the same. Our success is based upon a constant swing back and forth from Labour to Tories and back again. Labour has lost the ball so give it to the Tory's, and wait for them to fumble.
Mark, Kent, England
The problem with electing the Conservative party to power at the next election is that for years they would blame everything that went wrong on "years of Labour misrule" whoever was to blame! Ah politics!!
Kiff, Roch, Pembrokeshire
CUT PUBLIC SPENDING, CUT TAXES! It's the economy stupid!
Neil, Burnley, england
What is this nonsense about putting aside money for a rainy day? What money? I suggest we all take a step back and think what it is we actually want from our government, such as fair taxes, care of the poor, education for our children, a strong economy and a real presence in foreign affairs.
Peter Shuttleworth, Chippenham, Wiltshire
Personally, I have lost faith in all three of the parties. I don't know where this country can go from here, but something needs to be done and soon! Gordon Brown should do the honourable thing and resign as soon as possible!
Steven Dwyer, Liverpool, England
This had to happen. Any more of Labour and we'll be living in a police state before long.
Robert, Wigan, Great Britain
The difference between Lab & Con is purely philosophical, the latter believing more in self-reliance, although unwilling to put this into practice: the majority of people don't really like self-reliance. One can just about slip a thin piece of paper between the parties. No clear blue water, though!
Peter Cressall, La Lucila, Argentina
So Harriet Harman has been speaking to chairs up and down the country. Is that why she sounds so wooden?
Peter Cressall, La Lucila, Argentina
Its not only food, petrol and stealth taxes -
Its Law and order and immigration as well
Sarah Belfast - why do you expect the gov to provide for your mother ?
I brought up 2 children on my own and put them through University on a low NHS salary - no benefits - took a second job to do it.
Margaret, Bristol, UK
Even if our problems can be blamed on the "global economy", a prudent government would've built up our reserves in the recent good years to provide a buffer against downturns.
But what did Gordon do? Sold our gold for peanuts, and kept borrowing.
Prudent? Don't make me laugh.
Chris K, Cheltenham, UK
We have a Prime Minister imposed by New Labour MP's he has no personality, cannot connect with the voters. New Labour MP's tell us they are underpaid compared to counterparts in industry well many can find out what they are worth come the next election. No unreceipted expenses in the real world.
A Seymour, Peterborough, UK
Labour has failed because we run, " aloadsofmoney"
economy as opposed to productive economy. There
is such a thing as free meal, but it's become a
fiasco and now few people feel their lives
arn't getting better.
The electorate look like a herd of sheep......
around like a record.
M walker, Nr Bromsgrove, Worcs
Just listen to Gordon Brown's blinkered views. As far as he's concerned it's all about the economic situation. The fact is that Labour have proved themselves yet again to be a party of stupid, dangerous ideas who are far too soft on the enemies of British values.
Michael Woodman, Bradford, UK
Don't get tooo carried away David Cameron, it is NOT so much how good the Tories are, it is much more about how very bad Labour has been and still is !!. What we need now in the UK are real Statesmen, as we used to have, not youthful spin doctors with no real backbone or decorum.
John, Woking, Surrey
Ironically, if devolution were to happen, would Gordon Brown even be wanted up there?
Nick, Bangkok, thailand
Surely this is another sign of "no confidence" in Gordon Brown and New Labour?
The people have made it clear that they want a change of government and the disillusioned majority are not prepared to wait two more years for Brown to ruin our country even more. PLEASE GO NOW!
Paul, West Midlands,
Paul Redstall - what is the point of Cameron outlining his policies when they are immediately stolen by Gordon Brown? Cameron is doing the right thing and will wait until he is closer to an Genral Election before unveiling policies which Labour adopts!
Edward Schwab, London,
"We don't want to win just because Labour is failing. We don't want to win just because the Prime Minister is failing. We want to win because we have the right ideas for Britain's future."
It's about time the tories started giving us some idea opf their policies then isn't it?
Paul Redstall, Basingstoke, England
Now watch the numbers in favour of Scottish independence begin to soar.
DickW, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
This Government has done what all Labour governments have done in the past namely to waste our money and increase taxation. The credit crunch would be far less painful but for the oppressive tax burden shouldered by those of us in work.We have had enough.
T Glover, Dorset, England
It matters not who is the leader, it matters not which country.
The economic facts of life is a country cannot keep spending what it has not earnt.
Paul, London, Canada
It wasn't only the 10p tax fiasco that brought this defeat. Labour have wrecked everything - at great expence - with highest EVER taxes. Millions in tax just from the fuel price hikes - Road tax hikes soon and then have the gall to say they want to be trusted to help the taxpayer. Gen Election now!
Bob, Cowes, UK
To those who claim we Tory voters have short memories...
Do you not recall the winter of discontent? A country crippled by trade union activism? Maybe you should take off you NuLabour issued rose tinted spectacles?
I for one am proud to vote Tory and will continue to do so!
Ian Stephenson , Sunderland,
Sleaze and greed? Cash for honours ring a bell? Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!
Labour have had their turn and have messed the country up. GB benefitted early on from Tory economic policies that hadn't yet borne fruit. Iron Chancellor!! What a joke. He and Captain Darling should GO!
Rob, Bromsgrove, "Great" Britain
Gordon Brown, I don't think your still getting the message. People are fed up with your policies of taxing and spending like there's no tommorow.
Raj Bangar, Chatham, Kent
Scotland, its time to cut and run.
SF, Dundee,
All I have read here are people moaning about how bad the Tories were when they were in power. I can remeber when the Labour government were in power back in the 70s. National strikes, bodies not being buriedm sky rocket taxes and national debt. The Labour governement have not learned one thing.
Mark, Buckingham, UK
For all those calling on us to look back at the Conservatives, I'd ask them to look back even further at life before Thatcher. Stagflation anyone?
Socialism does not work, there is no such thing as a free meal, and what we borrow now must be paid back by a future generation!
Dave, Blackburn,
So none of the recently published biographies - 'Lord' Levy, Cherie Booth, John Prescott - have helped New Labour's cause?
Now there's a surprise.
At least we now know why they rushed to get them out.......
MarkS, Leeds,
Gordon Brown says he has heard the clear and unequivocable message from Crewe. Can we be expecting his resignation later this afternoon then?
Peter, London,
About time too! If New Laboour is dead then the government can get on and address the concerns of its' real supporters and not the miidle classe who wish for the lassiez faire capitalism but demands safety nets for their money. Time to end the duplicious nature of the British state socilaism or capo
John, London,
I am afraid Mr Brown contrary to his words is not forward looking. If that were the case then we would not be an energy impoverished nation as we now are. Too much time spent listening to minority groups has left him high and dry as far as the average voter is concerned.
The tories? Who know's?
Edwin Williams, Gillingham, UK
The Tories are doing nothing for this victory, nothing has been said about fuel duty, immagration, social security scroungers public sector pay and pensions scandal, the list
is endless, they will jog into government with no real policy
and it will all start again.STOP WASTING OUR TAXES.
Alan, Glasgow,
Take note Gordon. The country is fed up with your parties misguided policies. Time is up for your stupid socialist ideas. Middle England is awaking and come 2 years will have its say!
Simon, Bedford, England
Gordon Brown says: "The message of the British public is clear and unequivocal: they want us to address these challenges."
I say:"The message of the British public is clear and unequivocal: Get out!"
budgie, walters ash,
To those saying don't we remember the UK under the Tories... With 90% of Labour funding now coming from the trade unions as everyone else deserts them we are heading back to revisit the Labour 70s. Mass strikes, rubbish on the streets, power cuts etc. Don't YOU remember that?
John, York,
All politician makes just one mistake, and then they cry over
spilled-milk? One mistake Gordon Brown PM.made was that
Mr Brown tried to take Tories votes, and losing his own supporters, nu-Labour was corrupted long time ago?Although
miracle do happen at time :Ken
Cllr Ken Tiwari (independent), Oxford, United Kingdom
Gordon for gods sake make the tories go away! They won't provide for my single mother because they think that she's a tax scrounger, they wont' help the poor because they think its their own fault, they will cut taxes from well needed social programs to fund their own useless policies. S.O.S.
Sarah , Belfast ,
Congratulations Mr. Timpson and successful team. I hope you will repay the voters with solid good work.
JT, Leeds,
Nu-labour has a choice - "go for bust" by waiting until 2010 before calling an election, in which case it will probably never be elected again. Or "damage limitation", which is to get out now and hope that the electorate's short memory will give them another go at it in a couple of decades' time.
Martin, Newmarket, Suffolk
Give the Conservatives a chance. Tories shouldn't have to keep paying for the perceived mistakes of Margaret Thatcher's government of the 1980's - privatising the Railways, allowing them to rust without proper national investment. Labour is getting bitter about it's own failures.
James Murray, Oxford, UK
I suspect many of those who voted Conservative are from working households earning less than 18kpa. Labour can now choose to ignore us or make sure we dont collapse under their tax burden.
dave kinsley, derby, uk
This result is more to do with voting for the alternative - albeit a not particularly overwhelming one. Politics in the UK now boils down to a choice between two parties with remarkable similarity to each other. So therefore really not a choice at all.
Jeremy Sims, Ryde, IOW
Do people in this country really want to go back to the Tories? They have short memories if they do. Are things really so bad under Labour. Of all the "problems" there are, we still have low inflation, low interest rates, low unemployment. Not something that will last for long if the tories get back
Mark Wood, Leicester, UK
so labour has to change, well then to what? left wing noooooo, right wing noooo, perhaps they can become hard working families like they have chanting about for years and claim the dole while us middle class lazy 60 hour a weekers who live in the south and call our self english support them.
James, Southampton,
I dont know who was the most stupid!
Those who thought they'd punish Gordon Brown for the 10p tax cut, or those wit have no memory or knowledge of what the tories didnt do when they in power! They have not changed and still have the same values, including sleaze and greed.
No change there!
Steve, Swindon, UK
