Henley-on-Thames The Conservatives will pick a candidate to replace Boris Johnson in his former constituency of Henley this week as the party moves to stage a quick by-election.
The move to usher in a replacement as quickly as possible is designed to capitalise on last week's landslide victory by David Cameron's party in Crewe & Nantwich.
The Tories are also understood to be concerned that, the longer they wait, the more ground will be gained by the Liberal Democrats, second in the constituency in 2005. Ann Ducker, 65, the Tory leader of South Oxfordshire District Council, is seen as the front-runner to replace Mr Johnson.
John Walsh, the Conservative agent in Henley, said that the party had pencilled in June 26 as the most likely date for a contest.
Mrs Ducker said she was surprised that she was regarded as the front-runner and added: “None of us would be a Boris. Boris was larger than life and a terrific personality. I'm very different.”

Of course Boris has to resign his seat, the people of London deserve someone who'll give their all to running the city. The Mayor of London is completely seperate from central government and parliament, while the PM is within that system.
Oliver Savory, London/Newcastle,
Boris for Chancellor, Jeremy C for PM; an unbeatable ticket.
Peter Rogers, waterloo, merseyside
yes Jeremy, but Brown doesn't do it very well, does he?
James, London,
Boris spends very little time in the Commons and was able to manage the Spectator and to write for the Telegraph in his spare time. I trust that the Spectator rather than the Taxpayer was paying his accomodation expenses while he was working elsewhere. Especially as Boris earns 250K for his column.
Heath, Chineham, UK
Yes indeed the Conservatives will take this seat without a doubt. We cannot forget that there is an alternative to the Conservatives and that is UKIP. Perhaps it is UKIP's time to prove what they can do for Britain as the big parties have proven equally inept at governing and should be replaced.
Douglas Cochrane, Halifax,
Why cant Boris stay and let just get rid of Brown?
Robert, Ipswich, Suffolk
Why does Boris Johnson have to resign his seat? Gordon Brown runs the UK, not just a big city, and is still an MP.
