Protest threat to Mandela concert

Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday concert will be picketed by demonstrators demanding that he speak out against Robert Mugabe’s regime in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwean exiles and human rights campaigners will protest at the concert at Hyde Park, Central London, on Friday evening.

Peter Tatchell, the human rights campaigner, who has twice attempted to arrest Mr Mugabe, will also attend. He said that there would be a “small, symbolic protest” against Mr Mandela’s failure to speak out over Zimbabwe.

Emmanuel Jal, a Sudanese rapper and former child soldier, who is taking part in the concert, said that Mr Mandela should intervene with Mr Mugabe. “If Nelson went to talk to him, it would make a difference,” Jal told The Times.

Mr Mandela was due to hold private talks with Gordon Brown yesterday. The Prime Minister’s spokesman played down suggestions that Mr Brown might prevail upon Mr Mandela to help to resolve the crisis in Zimbabwe.
