The government is aiming to pull the vast majority of British troops out of Iraq by the middle of next year, defence sources have revealed.
While there are no plans to withdraw before George W Bush hands over to the new American president at the turn of the year, the decision is now expected to be made “in the first half of 2009”.
Only troops training Iraqi military or police and special forces are likely to stay, unless there is a sharp change for the worse.
In an indication of Britain’s keenness to withdraw, Des Browne, the defence secretary, emphasised last week that Iraqi troops were better able to keep southern Iraq peaceful than British soldiers.
The Iraqi military had broken the grip of militias controlling the southern city of Basra, he said on a visit to the United States. If British troops had tried to oust the militias, “we would still be fighting”, Browne told the Brookings Institution in Washington.
His comments followed the leaking of an army report that criticises the Treasury for fuelling unrest in southern Iraq by failing to fund reconstruction quickly enough.
The paper, written in 2006 and overseen by Lieutenant-General Bill Rollo, now deputy coalition commander, said “too few resources, both human and financial, were allocated”.
— Military police are investigating an alleged sexual assault on a 14-year-old boy by British troops in Iraq in 2003, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
The incident is alleged to have taken place at Camp Breadbasket, Basra. The boy, now 19, is launching a civil case against the ministry.

Jay - however well intentioned your thanks I cannot accept them. With most of our country against the war & dubious of both our govts.' motives, our govt. sent troops against the people's will. It is a detriment to us that our govt. rather does the will of a US president rather than its own people.

Britain's forces in Afghanistan need to be larger and so
Afghanistans - 8,000 Troops...Iraq - 4,000 troops will probably
become...Afghanistan - 10,500 troops and Iraq - 1,500 troops
in 2009. America will probably transfer 3 or 4 Brigades
from iraq to Afghanistan in 2009, makes military sense.

Would you hit the lights on the way out? thanks.

Thanks UK for sending your brave troops over along side of our military. Regardless of whether the war was necessary or not, the fact is we're there and we have to deal with it now, as a proud American I appreciate all the assistance we get from the world community. We can always count on you guys.

The important part of all this is the Brits have completed their mission and it's time to turn southern Iraq to the Iraqis. Though a little more proactive stance against the militias might have been helpful, overall our British allies have succeeded. They've earned the right to head home in honor.

Lieutenant-General Bill Rollo is not the deputy commander of the coaltion in Iraq. Lieutenant-General John Cooper has held that position for over six months.

The British military had done very little in Basrah, other then sit on their hands at the airport and watch the militias take over for years...thanks to the Iraqi Army and their US Advisors for fixing the problem in less then 3 months.
Pete, Basrah,
Gordon, youll be off watch by 2010. And can stop spouting nonsense. Bring it on!

Thanks to those of you in the UK that have supported this effort. Iraq free and democratic, Syria out of Lebanon, Libya given up its WMD program, Isreal destroying 1/2 of Hezbollah, Syria now looking for peace with Israel, Iran more and more isolated. All of this happened because of the Iraq war.

Well, let's hope there is an end to this unholy mess and British troops can return home to fight more legitimate causes. Diplomacy is the art of politicians ..... or so they say.
