The Conservatives tried to preempt Gordon Brown’s autumn offensive with the launch yesterday of a 19-page paper, called An Unfair Britain, in which they attempt to show that Labour policies have made Britain more unfair.
They claim that the number of people in deep poverty has risen by 900,000 since Labour came to power and that the gap in life expectancy between rich and poor is the highest since the Victorian age.
They also claim that Labour’s “stealth” tax policies meant that the poorest now pay more than the rich, while a failure to reform schools meant that the education gap between poorer and better-off students is getting worse.
George Osborne, the Shadow Chancellor, aimed to undermine the Prime Minister as he prepared to unveil a series of new policies to help those suffering under rising fuel and food prices.
Mr Osborne said: “First it was ‘change’, then it was ‘aspiration’, and earlier this year it was all about government being ‘on your side’. Now we’re told, before it’s even started, that the next Gordon Brown relaunch will be about ‘fairness’ . . . [but] across the board, Labour’s policies have made Britain more unfair.”

All Labour supporters should get real. Labour has failed. After 11 years what is better about this country? After 11 years what is it that Labour has done that wouldn't have been done by the Tories given the growth in the economy (nothing to do with Labour by the way)? What has Labour really done?
Tom, Croydon,
Ironic then, Alphonsus, that you refer to the Tories as "the good old days".
Labour's economic record is built on foundations laid by Tory policy; remember? They didn't change a single thing for the first two years of their administration - The tories must know something about sound economics.
Mark J, Nottingham, UK
Some Labour supporters are so full of blind vitriol they do not wish to recognise that Labour's Kamakazi policies have utterly failed. Stealth taxes (over 112) and attacks on private and company pension funds have stolen the retirement dreams of millions.Labour has failed and everyone knows it.

What a load of crap Osborne is spouting now. I can remember the good old days under the Tories for I brought up 6 children under their last Government and could and would not trust the Tories ever again.19 pages George I could write 19 paperbacks one for each year of Tory Unfairness and Mis-Rule
