The government squandered almost £500m by leasing RAF transport aircraft that it could have bought outright for less money.
The Ministry of Defence wanted to buy the four Boeing C17 Globemasters for £520m but was told by Gordon Brown, then the chancellor, to lease them because it would be cheaper.
New figures show the MoD paid a total of £769m to lease the aircraft and then had to buy them anyway for an additional £220m. The final payment was made last month, putting the total price over eight years at £989m.
The MoD’s financial problems are now so great that the prime minister has still not signed off on its spending plans for this financial year.
The giant C17 transporters, flown by 99 Squadron based at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, can carry three Warrior armoured vehicles or a dozen Land Rovers. The MoD has since bought two more for £130m each, putting the total for the RAF’s six-aircraft fleet up to £1.25 billion.
Gerald Howarth, the Conservative defence spokesman, said the lease deal had been “an absolute shocking waste of public money when our troops are going without the equipment they need”.
The MoD said the decision to lease the aircraft was taken to meet a short-term need. Buying the leased aircraft to cope with operations in Iraq and Afghanistan was subsequently seen as “the best value-for-money option”.

When it was known that the aircraft would be leased and there was a limit to the number of flying hours - This cost overrun was predicted at the time by the RAF but no one listened...again
John, Wiltshire, England
The MoDs financial problems are now so great
Just like the rest of the Uk Gordon had no idea about long term security.
andy , winchester,
Gordon Brown knows as much about economics as the average school-leaver with a GCSE pass in the subject.
Colin Houlding, Bury, UK
Brown/ Balls etc couldn't run a sweet shop. None of then have ANY business/commerical experience. They cant read a P&L Account or Balance Sheet and have never had to worry about where the money is coming from. None have any real man management or leadership skills. A bloody shambles... again!
Alan, Uxbridge, England
Jimd of Norwich says to blame the operators (the RAF) for flying the C-17s too much. It is the government that decided to commit the Armes Forces to 2 medium scale enduring operations against all planning assumptions. Funded for peace, fighting wars it is no wonder they have overflown the contract
Craig, Lincoln, UK
2 dozen lines don't tell the whole story. Seems like the MOD operators exceeded the terms of the lease in terms of hours, useage etc. Anyone who has a lease car knows the significant penalties for too much use. Look at the operators rather than the Prime Minister - who briefed the low cost.
Jimd, Norwich, UK
Gordon Brown in a good economist, just not a charasmatic leader.
Matthew, Shrewsbury, UK♦
It is little wonder that many troops are leaving the Armed Forces when we have civil servants and MPs who do not listen to what the troops need to do their job. How much more money is to be wasted by this government before they wake up and 'smell the coffee'? It is time this government went.
Paul, Llantwit Major, Wales
Nevertheless, can Mr Brown now stump up some more cash please for another 20 C17 because the RAF desperately needs more transport aircraft. Please Gordon!
Rachel Melrose, Lincoln,
Give Gordon Brown a calculator and he'd be dangerous!
Arthur, Newcastle,
Donna Walker, Effingham, England - Agree entirely - it has always been the weakness of the UK political system that MPs come from local government, the law profession, teaching profession and other trades unions and some on the blue side from banking and finance but none from the business sector.
Kenneth Armitage, Suffolk, England
Lack of vision....where to next Gordon?
Keith, Newcastle, England
Prudence?
judy, Liverpool, England
And how much are the PFI Hospitals costing, I'm convinced this goverment has nearly finished what they set out to do, ruin England. The burden placed on this country in particular is crippling, for families, for students and even when you reach old age. Dispicable!!
L.Hall, kettering, England
This is the result when you have a Chancellor, Prime Minister and Cabinet that contains no-one with any business experience whatsoever. We need to change the requirements for MPs so that unless they have a minimum of 10 years working in the private sector they are ineligible for ministerial office.
Donna Walker, Effingham, England
The prudent chancellor strikes again!
Paul, Singapore,
Such promise this man has.
His achievements are ......are......erm.....
Yachydda, Wrexham, Wales
Gordon Brown was a lousy chancellor and is now a lousy prime minister. When are the British public going to wake up and make this man pay, and pay dearly, for his gross mismanagement of the economy?
Pete, Lincoln, England
Still, he's getting on with the job, the one that everybody wants him to do.
Albert Hall, kettering,
