Boris Johnson has plans to save millions of pounds by shedding about 100 jobs. The Mayor of London also said that he would freeze the council tax raised by the Greater London Authority.

Mr Johnson said that all but essential recruitment would be frozen and budgets would be reassessed. Expenditure at the public relations unit in City Hall would be cut by 20 per cent and middle management would be reduced.

He said that job cuts would be kept to a minimum and, instead, vacant positions would not be filled.

Mr Johnson said: “Our objective in these reforms is, of course, not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. We now have the chance to get rid of some expensive bathwater, while keeping the bouncing baby that is this young and confident institution.”

John Biggs, Labour’s deputy leader on the London Assembly, said that freezing council tax would mean cutting services such as policing.
